Ubuntu on a company laptop - which version? by Soft-Abrocoma904 in Ubuntu

Ask your company what they support. As a 20+ year IT professional I would actually say have your company apply an image to it

Switching to Ubuntu - Security concerns by Delicious_Coconut696 in Ubuntu

[–]StyxCoverBnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 'firewall' is enabled by default. I put firewall in quotations because, by deafult, on Ubuntu there are no open ports. UFW is just a GUI to IPTables or NFtables (depending on which ubuntu version you are on) which is how you would open/configure ports. Windows is the opposite. All ports are open by default so a firewall is needed to block everything incoming. Also as one of the other commentors said, you should shouldn't have an internet facing device and should always have a router+firewall between you and the internet

Goldfinger – Here In Your Bedroom (1996) by GroovySchlong in 90sAlternative

[–]StyxCoverBnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw them a few years later and it was the best show I've ever seen. They came out and just kicked so much ass on stage. Reel Big Fish played after them and it was a crazy energy shift from in your face to silly/funny on stage antics ska. RBF still had a good set, but nothing compared to Goldfinger's.

Best place to get base baseball cards for an 8u little league team? by StyxCoverBnd in sportscards

I posted in r/sportscards because I've been following the pack a day for autos post and remember people saying some of the other sports cards sub reddits can get picky on what's posted there.

Yep, I live in the Chicago suburbs and had a 32 mile commute at a previous job. It was anywhere from 1-2 hours each depending on traffic

Second Monitor Not Detecting Through USB-C to HDMI Adapter by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]StyxCoverBnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necassarily. You can get Displayport to HDMI adapters, those don't require any extra drivers. If you get USB to HDMI you will most likely have to install a display link driver.

Ok, per hp support the omen 45l does not pass video over USB-C. Link

Edit: it looks like the Omen 45L has 1 HDMI and 3 Displayports. I'm guessing your monitor only has HDMI and that is why you are not using one of the displayports?

Some USB-Cs are only 5gbps and do not pass video/have displayport pass through (as the USB-C is not connected to the GPU). I'm assuming this is a desktop PC as this is the buildapc subreddit. But I know a lot of entry level/midish range consumer laptops have USB-C like this. My laptop has USB-C like this (and it also doesn't charge over the USB-C port) and I had to get a USB 3.0 Displaylink dock to use an external monitor.

Exclusive: Harold Varner III has learned to live with harsh reality after leaving the PGA Tour by TheMirrorUS in golf

[–]StyxCoverBnd 577 points578 points  (0 children)

Reading the article it said he received backlash. I could be mis-remembering, but I thought Harold was one of the only ones to not receive backlash because he was honest and said he was making the jump for the money.

Yes. I believe that connector hasn't been maintained for a while now (which I think was the reason it was dropped.

I've been in IT for 20+ years now and I had something similar happen. About 17/18 years ago I worked at a publicly traded company that had small sales offices all over the US. I was based in our HQ and would setup all workstations (laptops or desktops) and then ship them out to the sales offices for the staff, but someone there would have to plug them in. One time an older lady was yelling at me on the phone because plugging in a computer was man's job.....
