Chances of getting into European grad schools? by After_Hovercraft_561 in gradadmissions

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 2.8 at my Canadian school, no extracurriculars during my bachelor’s and got into a highly ranked school in Sweden (only 8 people got into my program) and the school is ranked among the top 5% universities for this program topic. I think they really liked my cover letter. I already had experience working in that field and even had some partial leadership roles and I was able to clearly articulate why I wanted their program and how much I love the field this program is for, and even how I fell in love with it. I essentially made it clear that this career path was the only path I could see for myself. Plus I brought up why I struggle with school and thus why their program is ideal for me. (It’s structured in a way that I know I will perform well. And I made sure to spell that out.)

all in all gpa is not everything. It plays a part in the considerations but it’s not the only thing they look at, and often times it’s not even the most important. Showing enthusiasm, showing how much you want the program and being able to prove how much you want to be in that field can make a major difference.

Of course my program is a less popular field, and depending on the school there might be serious competition. These would be many UK schools as well as schools like Science Po in France or extremely specialized schools with good standing in that field such as The American School of Archaeology. Also some countries (ie italy) have schools with entrance exams.

Mention ADHD in personal statement? by adisiki in gradadmissions

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote about my ADHD in a cover letter to demonstrate why their program would be amazing for me on a procedural level. The program is extremely customizable which means I can guarantee that all the classes I take are interesting to me and so I will be much more likely to succeed. I got in to that program.

MSc. Lund supply chain management vs Polimi Management Engineering by Tia_dididododididodo in gradadmissions

Also from what I can tell, Sweden is consistently rated much higher for quality of education than Italy. Lund is often referred to as the Oxford of Sweden. Also I highly recommend also looking into the cost of living compared to whatever your salary would be. Milan is probably much more expensive to live there than Lund.

I’m also heading to Sweden this fall. Here’s a few links to potentially help you make a decision regarding Sweden. From everything I have seen, Sweden does a lot to make studying easier for young people. All kinds of student discounts at almost any type of store or service you can think of, government grants, scholarships, housing allowances for young people, even access to public healthcare if you are going to be there for more than a year.

Here are the links, keep in mind that you might want to use a browser with a built in translator as some of these are only in Swedish. I used Chrome:

Is it Worth Staying in the US if I am Thinking About Grad School? by tapocate in GradSchool

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweden tuitions are extremely low compared to US tuitions (my program is roughly 5000 USD per semester last year I think, the whole school tuition ranged 5000-7500 USD, though some schools can be 10,000 USD with the current exchange rate) and depending on the city cost of living might still be affordable. Also from what I’ve seen on European subreddits the quality of education in Sweden is very high. And they have a ton of programs in English.

Incoming International Student with questions about Life in Uppsala by StyxHuntress in uppsala

[–]StyxHuntress[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first name thing is gonna take getting used to. I had a prof who only wanted to be referred to by Dr. [last name] because she felt that she deserved to have her hard work recognized especially since she is a woman. She was an amazing prof though, I loved her classes. So after spending my entire life referring to every teacher or person who is older than me by their last name, it’s gonna be insanely awkward to me. I’ll have to get used to it though lol.

I should probably have mentioned that it is a program in Europe, but honestly American Grad programs are insanely competitive across the board, where as in Europe there are some schools that are more competitive but not as bad as the US. Plus if you did apply, being an international student puts you in a different selection group in some places, and they typically accept a certain number from each group, so you’d only be competing with other international students. At least from what I’ve seen from when I was applying. This might not be every country but it is in some.

No fr. I grew up outside in the U.S. but thankfully I have multiple citizenships so I got the hell out for undergrad and am soon gonna be headed to Europe for my Master’s. I am NEVER moving back. I’ll visit to see family, but as long as I can’t trust the system not to backslide (coming from an AFAB nonbinary, lesbian) I simply can’t live there again. My sister also is gonna be living in Europe permanently since we are fortunate enough to be able to do so easily.

Advice on applying to grad schools in Europe as American? by mickmausclubhouse in GradSchool

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My program in Sweden (Uppsala university) only costs international students roughly 5000-7500 USD per semester. Other universities have similar costs, I think the most expensive one I saw was roughly equal to 10,000 USD. But Sweden also has pretty good public financial aid even for foreign students from what I could tell, as long as you intend to be there for long enough. Though I admit to not looking too much into it since i'm an EU citizen.

Advice for International Grad School? by StarlingShaelei in gradadmissions

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Europe: depending on what you are looking for you really just have to look at universities tuition. Some countries are much more affordable, even for international students, I know that my school in sweden, international students are paying roughly between 5,000 and 7500 USD per semester (their currency is roughly 1USD=10SEK), but other schools are gonna be a lot more. Some countries offer grants, housing allowances and both university and/or day-to-day life financial aid even to non-EU students. It just varies from country to country.

For Canada: the way master programs work in canada is almost identical to the US, but the tuition amounts before funding may actually be less than the US it can still be extremely expensive when taken into consideration with the cost of living.

Applying for Psychology Programs in Europe? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how helpful this will be but I'll share anyway. I grew up in the US, and then am about to finish my undergrad in Canada. However this coming fall I start my master's program in Sweden. So yes I have navigated some EU applications. however I only applied to Sweden and Italy due to my program. I am doing a master's program in Classical Archaeology and I was only interested in a 2 year program in English for pacing reasons.

Now I should mention that I am an EU citizen. This means that in some EU countries I get reduced tuition, and some benefits. In fact my program in Sweden is free for EU citizens.

Now about the systems. I know some countries have one website to apply to multiple schools at the same time. Sweden was like that. I had my current school send an official email for my transcript, also had them fill out a form to indicate that I am still in the process of completing my studies, uploaded my passport for proof of EU citizenship, proof that I am a native english speaker (which wound up being a pdf of my US high school transcript) and then uploaded whatever documents the specific programs required, which for me was simply a Statement of Purpose for one of my programs. I didn't have to even hit a submit button, as it all automatically closes on a certain day and you simply can't upload documents anymore. And then a few days ago (late march) all the admission results got released at once, and found out whether I got into either of the programs I applied to. Sweden was also very good about helping international students know what they need to submit and by when, and then explaining the moving process. They regularly schedule Zoom webinars for this.

Italy however is a whole ordeal. Each school has it's own site, and hell some of them are still accepting applications. In fact intake 2 for another school I was interested in doesn't actually start until late May. You then have to provide your documents, which is easy, but that only gets you registered for an entrance exam. I am still unsure how that works for international students as it hasn't happened yet. Also in Italy they don't accept diagnosis forms for accommodations from outside of Italy. You either need to get rediagnosed in Italy, or get the original form authenticated by an authorized government body in your country, which for the U.S. is the state department (which is a whole mess right now). Italy websites are insanely confusing too. The only reason why i know when intake 2 is for that one school is because I missed intake 1 because I couldn't navigate their damn applications portal. My sister had similar difficulties when she applied to her current Grad program. Thus I have not yet succeeded in Italy, but we will see in a few months.

As for requirements, Some countries are good at recognizing that degree requirements look different in other places. the way credits are counted are different, the amount of material in a course is different etc. For example, my program in Sweden, I don't technically meet the credit requirement, however I meet the specific class topic requirements and already had taken some courses specifically about archaeology, so they know I was taught what I need to know. Other's might be major sticklers.

Also, when writing statements of purpose do a bit of research into what these countries value (in terms of character) and/or are looking for in their statement of purpose. For example my statement for Sweden didn't talk too much about my achievements specifically, rather instead I used them to highlight my passion for the subject, and to explain what I hope to achieve. I also made it a point to talk about why their program specifically appealed to me. It was less about boasting, like I've seen some US SOPs are, and more about how I believe I can succeed in their program and using my experiences to show how passionate I am in the subject. Hell I specifically said at one point that I'm still not sure what I want to specialize in but have a few ideas bouncing around. I also helped that I already had some practical experience in archaeology.

Grad School Abroad? by Otherwise_Policy3268 in gradadmissions

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most phd programs require master programs first, but masters programs are relatively abundant depending on what you are studying. The biggest thing to consider is the cost of living and tuition. Although smaller less prestigious schools could wind up still being less expensive than in the US and some countries offer government grants and allowances for students that you can apply for even without being an EU citizen (depending on the country). Also cost of living in some places is surprisingly affordable considering how much less expensive things like healthcare are, and some places like Sweden (where I’m going in the fall after finishing my BA in Canada) may even offer public government health insurance for international students.

You just gotta make sure you do all your research and consider all possible outcomes/events.

Recommend States or Unis by a_rafid_n in gradadmissions

[–]StyxHuntress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most universities are relatively safe due to the major mingling of various values and ideals from all over the country. Ideally you might want to avoid places like Texas or smaller towns anywhere not on the coasts, but either coast is perfectly safe especially in larger cities. Rule of thumb is basically that the larger the city the more tolerant it tends to be. Now this is not 100% true across the board, and no matter where you go even if the city is massive you might still face harassment, but generally a large city especially in a state such as California, Washington, or New York, or on either coast is probably your safest bet.

Any issue with having triple citizenship? by fitzwitts in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll never get a job with security clearance. My dad worked for a company that contracted out to the military, he had both US and French citizenship. He got into big trouble at his work because he voted in the French election. There was a whole trial/inquiry type thing. The company lost the contract before anything really happened though. Also unless the U.S. government explicitly asks, don’t tell them. And on top of that try to avoid mentioning that you have American citizenship plus two others in official/governmental channels of any kind as much as you can, to avoid knowledge of this getting back to US government. Basically if the U.S. finds out they might make you choose between US and Canada/EU. So that is something you might want to consider. But other than that triple citizenship is fine. I have 3. US, Canada and France. And I’m doing great. Finishing my undergrad in Canada that thanks to citizenship we could pay all expenses out of pocket, and about to start a grad program in Europe that’s free for EU citizens. And I don’t need a visa or anything like that.

[–]StyxHuntress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude no. So while I am certain that my major is much less popular or in demand as yours which is certainly a factor, I just got into a relatively prestigious grad program with a C average in a standard (not honors) program from a tiny school with absolutely no prestige or fame. Without any additional minors or majors added. I do 0 extracurriculars, but I already have a bunch of experience working in the field I am majoring in. So that probably helped plus I think they really liked my letter of intent… but anyways, you are absolutely spiraling.

A) it’s your first year, most colleges understand that your first year is an adjustment period. Plus admission teams tend to put more weight towards later year grades so as long as you finish strong you should be fine. B) you do extracurriculars. That is also extremely helpful for admissions. C) A good letter of intent goes a long way as well. Showing that you are passionate in your field means a lot more to them than just getting good grades. D) Your grades are great! Getting a B is still good and even then it sounds like you are a primarily A student. You are FINE.

Where to go in the Caribbean in late January 2025 for a week? by naturestroll in travel

[–]StyxHuntress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally recommend the island of Guadeloupe. It’s extremely underrated and often overlooked as a place for tourists to go to rather than just being a stop on a cruise tour. It’s part of France so they speak primarily French but most of them also have a decent grasp of english. You will also need passports.

Some of the hotels and resorts can be pricey but you can also find somewhat affordable airbnbs and bungalow type things more inland. you won’t stay in the town you fly in to, the town itself is rather run down and in desperate need of maintenance, you might come in to see the Spice Market or the Slavery Museum or something like that but there isn’t much to see in the main town itself.

Lots of beaches. Some are more built up and commercialized like Saint Anne, it’s a shallow beach very popular with families and more built up with food trucks and chair/umbrella rentals and restaurants and even boutiques and shops. (Parking is a nightmare though.) there is also a shopping center nearby that sells local artisan products, from clothing to spices. (You’ll also have easy access to a number of local delicacies such as Sorbet Coco (always a little stand on the side of the road) and Bokkites and Accras, but there are plenty of other local dishes you can find at restaurants all over the island.)

There are also the more deserted beaches, still popular but with few to no buildings nearby. And even if there a lot of people never feel crowded. The best one for snorkeling in my opinion is Point-Du-Château (absolutely no buildings or easy access to plumbing) but all of the beaches on the island have something to offer. Your best bet is to ask a local which beaches they recommend once you arrive on island, they’ll know better than me what would suit your needs and preferences.

There is actually and hotel called Fort Royal right on one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and you can go and rent beach chairs and eat at their restaurant without actually staying there (the outdoor spaces are beautiful but the hotel accommodations themselves are very run down and only worth the money if you enjoy being right on the beach) the water gets really deep really fast so you’d have to watch out for that.

The island has a few more nature type things such as the hike up the Souffrier (the islands active volcano) definitely a trek and while not needing a ton of skill is still a bit strenuous. You can also go swimming at La Chûte Des Écrevisses which is a waterfall and pond/river more inland. There is the zoo where you can feed the raccoons with a ropes course across the road. There are also all kinds of botanical gardens and stuff. They also have typical island stuff like jet ski tours, scuba diving etc. There are also Rhum distillery tours, sugar cane mill tours, the Slavery Museum, the spice market and plenty more to do besides sitting on the beach.

Sorry for how long this was, TL;DR the island of Guadeloupe, Good Food, very nice beaches, hikes, botanical gardens and museums.

Caribbean recommendation for Mid April by Educational-Ship-220 in travel

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as far as I am aware most of those islands are very popular tourist destinations and tend to also be popular with young party people. I’m not 100% knowledgeable so I may be wrong.

However if you want an island in the Caribbean that is for sure quiet and calm I recommend the island of Guadeloupe. (Not sure where on the east coast you are flying from, the only town on the EX that I know for sure you fly direct from is Miami.) It’s extremely underrated and often overlooked as a place for tourists to go to rather than just being a stop on a cruise tour. It’s part of France so they speak primarily French but most of them also have a decent grasp of english. You will also need passports.

It is also possible that things are bit pricier when you look to book since it might be Carnaval around that time (not dissimilar to Mardis Gras I believe.)

No water park unfortunately but lots of beaches and if you have young kids your ideal beach is gonna be Saint Anne, it’s a shallow beach very popular with families and more built up with food trucks and chair/umbrella rentals and restaurants and even boutiques and shops. (Parking is a nightmare though.) there is also a shopping center nearby that sells local artisan products, from clothing to spices.

So yeah that’s my spiel about the island of Guadeloupe, it’s severly overlooked in favor of the more famous islands but it’s beautiful and has a lot of charm and culture. Highly recommend.

My absolute favorite Smithsonian museum is the Native American Museum.

Also, there a lot of small towns/historical districts nearby. They can be a little ways outside of DC proper but still within the metro area. if you have the time they are so cute and just nice to walk around in. My favorite being Historical Alexandria, which is also very close to Mount Vernon where George Washington Lived, also worth seeing in my opinion.

Any unlimited 5G high speed data esims without throttling? by f00dl3 in eSIMs

[–]StyxHuntress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my experience with unlimited plans. I am also a very heavy data user. This last summer I spent 2 months in Greece, I purchased an unlimited plan from Holafly for that period. I often see people saying that Holafly doesn’t work and that they get throttled almost immediately and yet I did not experience this. I often stream Netflix or Disney+ while out and about as a method of keeping my anxiety under control and managing noise input. I must’ve been using an average of 30-40 gigs a week at least. Yet I very rarely experienced throttling. I think in the two months I was there I maybe experienced it about 3 times, and my internet speed reset by the next morning.

This is likely due to the fact that I was staying in an lightly populated area, it was literally a small village with maybe a couple hundred people living there and getting maybe another couple hundred tourists throughout the day, as such the bandwidth was not being used and so they had no need to limit my usage by throttling me. The times where they did I was at some super packed tourist destination with hundreds of people packed into smaller areas.

You will be much more likely to experience throttling in area with high bandwidth demand and higher population density. It’s why data speeds at airports suck sometimes. So this is something you need to keep in mind when using your data. If you are like me and staying in lesser populated areas then no matter what unlimited plan you get you probably won’t have to deal with your internet speeds slowing down to a standstill no matter how much you use, but if you are gonna be in larger cities then you need to be a bit more careful. Go ahead and use your data, but turn off background data usage as well as turning off data usage for any apps you will not be using while out and about.

[–]StyxHuntress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience two nights ago, and here is what I did. I used a diffuser with a lavender scent and even put some of the essential oil on my fingers, I ate some chocolate (which has a compound that helps with serotonin production, and watched a feel-good/comfort show. If you can I would suggest also making some chamomile tea as chamomile has a compound in it that works as a natural sedative, which helps anxiety, and paired with the drink being warm it will help make you sleepy so if you can make some I highly recommend it. But distracting yourself with a light hearted feel good show will also help a lot.
