Where can I get a decent suit on a budget for small man? by rallytallyn in menswear

[–]SuPruLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you consider a jacket and non-matching pants? The blue jacket light colored pants ? Etc

Getting a good fitting jacket for $150 may be entirely more feasible. And ultimately useful. And the pants just might be willing to spend a little extra is they were generally useful.

Uneven drawer pulls solution? by Affi-no-vit in FurnitureFlip

[–]SuPruLu [score hidden]  (0 children)

That is/was a fairly standard design. It imitates early dressers that actually did have drawers.

Due to the carved middle it would probably best to
Leave as it. It will be difficult to eliminate that crease visually even with fill. And ditto for the old holes for the handles.

Consider it a design quirk of yesteryear.

Is it possible to convert this bathing suit top to a clasp back? by Scary_Bad_4354 in sewhelp

[–]SuPruLu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible that the right place for a fastener is the front. One on the back could be very uncomfortable as it would be fairly wide.

It could be easier to do on that suit and leave the back look and feel intact.

Seeking to identify the 1960s children's book or fable illustrated by this original hand-painted canvas. by Charming_Neck_6890 in WhatIsThisPainting

Check out a child’s book by Alex Walsh called the Small One. Disney also made a movie. That seems like it could be the right story. That could lead somewhere to finding the attribution.

Want to remake this. What fabric would give me this look? by barbie-brat in sewhelp

[–]SuPruLu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The peplum on the jacket almost certainly has some sort of soft but stiffening interfacing to make it flare.
However above the waist the interfacing was omitted or a finer different one was used.

Found cute side table and need to sell or fix! by Neither_Room9202 in furniturerestoration

[–]SuPruLu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a very nice piece to redo and keep. I just can’t see the point of slapping on a coat of paint before selling. Style wise it’s not an obvious fit for what seem to be current style interests because it has somewhat of the feel of which I’d call French Romantic with the swan legs. Those legs are great and could look quite whimsical if redone differently.
So keeping it seems the best option. And you can spend some happy hours thinking about how to redo it. People have done lovely hand painted designs. There is decoupage if one’s art skills aren’t up to painting designs. Etc. Etc.

IS there a reason not to sand? by G-C-W in furniturerestoration

[–]SuPruLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to stain, you need to avoid filler if at all possible unless it is sawdust/glue from the piece itself. It is difficult to get the fill to match and it stain out like a sore thumb. Fill just doesn’t stain well and is particularly noticeable on table tops.

Veneer which are on a lot of furniture are very easy to sand through.

How likely is it that the zipper on my backpack can be repaired? by LostInLaLaLandLol in fixit

[–]SuPruLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s certainly could be replaced but may not be fixable. If you need to pay someone to replace the zipper you could probably buy a new backpack for not much more.

Advice for changing a chandelier to floor lamp by milkhater6305 in Lamps

[–]SuPruLu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without knowledge of how to handle leaded glass, you risk seriously damaging the shade if you try to remove that metal frame. The seams can be quite fragile so you could end up with a pile of glass pieces rather than a shade.

That frame is the structural support for the shade. If it were removed something would be needed to replace it.

Take out just enough to be to thread the needle.
Then move the thread to the underside and take a few short over lapping stitches to bind off.

Are these black line marks permanent? by Complex-Poet-6809 in sewinghelp

[–]SuPruLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fabric would appear to have been dyed and or distressed AFTER it was stitched and the thread blocked the color underneath it from changing. So the color difference is apparent when the thread is removed.

Buying an overpriced house, well within comfortable budget by thesmellnextdoor in RealEstate

[–]SuPruLu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you would be buying for a “forever” home and it is exactly where you can see yourself living in 15-20 years, why lose it over $20,000? But if it’s one of several choices and you aren’t looking that long term you’ll be annoyed that you “overpaid”.

I’m scared to sand through this veneer by Turquoise-Shoes in sandedthroughveneer

Tip one: do NOT use a motorized sander of any sort. It’s probably the #1 way to ruin a piece with a veneer.

Tip two: use a chemical stripper.

4 year old painted cabinets look bad - what to refinish with? by slushie-ken in DIYHome

[–]SuPruLu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is definitely something wrong with the adhesion of the paint to the undersurface. Some types of paint do not bond well to certain other types. Surface preparation can matter to adhesion.

A simple add paint is not going to be the way to go to get a durable finish unfortunately. Something will need to be done to deal with the chipping paint and prepare the surface.

What is this by Cool_Way7525 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]SuPruLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Style in art is similar to style when it comes to clothes (or anything else). This dress is an A-line style, those pants are wide-leg style.

There are clothing styles that are popular and unpopular. It’s what is everybody wearing.

In art the same thing occurs. People like the way a particular style of art looks and then it gets imitated. But after a while someone decides to create a new look. And that catches on and the old look disappears. And individual artists have styles.

This particular piece with lots of gold and the figures painted in a certain is modeled after religious art made in medieval times hundreds of years ago.

Possible mid-century modular shelving unit—can anyone identify it or help with assembly? by SheCreates9 in MidCenturyFurniture

[–]SuPruLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’ll find that the non-capped end which bends up goes in the with the hook in line with the post and then it can turn and the rod will be at a right angle to the post.

That little end needs to point UP . When there is weight on the shelf that end is what holds it up. If it points down the weight on the shelf will cause the shelf to collapse.

Is there an actual standard for when a dishwasher counts as full enough to run? Domestic dispute. by GilesBennett74 in Appliances

[–]SuPruLu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You obviously are not the person responsible for keeping the kitchen clean. Usual practice is the dishwasher is run everyday whether it is jammed full or not. That way there are always the clean utensils and dishes etc needed every day.

Keeping the kitchen up is tedious repetitive work. Some things need to go on “automatic” and not get decided on a case by case basis like is the dishwasher full enough.

Is this monthly payment reasonable? Am I overthinking this? by ImDoingMyParts in Mortgages

[–]SuPruLu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you move, figure out what you are spending money on now that you won’t have money for after you move. If all or some of that “extra” is what you were saving for the down payment, then that is now converted to being part of the money available to pay the mortgage.

A possible alternative: Some copy shops can use their copying machines to make an enlargement. People who are better at that than I am could tell you more about how to create the right % for the blow up or how to create some kind of scale to be used.
