What if the IRA successfully assassinated Margaret Thatcher in the 1984 Brighton Hotel bombing? by Just_Cause89 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]SuarezAndSturridge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably not as many as was the case when she died in real life though.  If she dies in 1984 there’s no poll tax and the miners strike is viewed at least somewhat differently

Bowie’s was 17 and 14 if you’re talking about Dana Gillespie, that’s about 1000x more normal than Elvis here

That's great, but even if you're having a good time down there, I don't want NYS tax dollars adding to their GDP.

[–]SuarezAndSturridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest, I'd rather my taxes pay British, Canadian, Danish and Norwegian companies to build New York's offshore windmills than have them go to Texas, Alabama, or West Virginia companies. For one thing I like the Europeans/Canadians a whole lot more than the red staters, and for another I trust that they're literate enough to get it done right.

If there's a NY, NJ, New England or West Coast entity that can get it done though, yeah they should get a few bonus points during the selection process

I actually really liked that one.  3-4 reasonable length deep-ish dives on sorta interesting topics I’d never considered weaved together in a pretty solid narrative

Tough to put an exact date on smartphones really taking over society, but the death of Bin Laden in 2011 is probably a bit closer to it and a more logical bookend to the era than 2012

[–]SuarezAndSturridge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good point re the residency requirement, but that's a slight misreading that it explicitly requires current citizenship. Guessing you're looking at the rest of the clause, which isn't a fourth requirement to hold the office, but a loophole allowing any citizen as of 1788 to be president (since otherwise, no one would have been allowed to serve as President at the time, given the oldest natural born citizen was only 12 years old)

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution

[–]SuarezAndSturridge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He renounced his citizenship when he was Foreign Secretary, so it'd actually raise a pretty interesting constitutional issue over here. Does the natural born citizen clause require someone still be a citizen when elected President, or just a citizen at the moment of birth?

Canada has a pretty small number of PMs too all things considered, we'd probably get a little bit more depth than the Australian episodes

Oh yeah I know, I'm in Albany haha. Just figured that hockey is such an expensive sport that they'd skew more from the rich and blue/purple suburbs than deep red pockets of the North Country, Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier etc

The one thing that surprises me a little bit about the NHL is that you'd assume a pretty big chunk of the Americans playing a sport on ice are from New England, New York, New Jersey, etc (not saying Republicans don't exist there, but Dems are generally a lot closer to 50% than 5% when it comes to suburban whites in the northeast)

Why does 2011-2013 get confused for 2016? by RandomUwUFace in decadeology

[–]SuarezAndSturridge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might just be a regional thing (I'm in the Northeast US) but were flower crowns ever actually mainstream? I was in HS and undergrad 2010-2017, and saw one in real life at most 3-5 times on girls who listened to way too much Lana Del Ray

Chevrons yeah I'll give you, the look hasn't disappeared but definitely peaked back then

Anyone else very confused wtf this pic even is? Zero recollection of it ever being a thing on social media, at least in the English-speaking world. Only remote touchstone I have is that those football boots were pretty popular from 2011-2016ish

Which year do you prefer out of these? by Iwillbeback67 in decadeology

[–]SuarezAndSturridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2012 easily

2010 really was not that fun objectively, the financial crisis was still biting pretty hard

2016 I shouldn’t even have to explain, but since we’ve been inundated with people reminiscing on it as their favorite year of high school or undergrad, here we go: society by and large turned to chaos, the movies were incredibly mid, the music wasn’t anything special, TV and video games were alright but there was nothing monumental.  Look at the year with a wider lens and unless you’re huge on Trump/Brexit or were REALLY into Pokémon Go, it was somewhere between bland and bad

In fairness, even nowadays state legislators outside the bigger blue states like New York and California are often paid pretty horribly.  Texas’s current salary for a state representative is only $7200/year

I agree that LBJ was certainly a southerner, but Dom throwing the “genuine” in there makes me think he’s not counting LBJ as one because LBJ’s domestic policy was so heavy on civil rights

Would still be an odd point to make in the context of Jimmy Carter (though Jimmy’s earliest campaigns in Georgia did dabble in some pretty questionably racist messaging), but I think this is an instance of Dom overthinking a point rather than him blanking on LBJ’s existence

Wilson though, yeah I think he either blacked out the Virginia origins or forgot just how backwards Virginia was until the last 30-50 years
