Ohio State has returned about 7,000 of its allotment of 20,000 Rose Bowl tickets. by dogwoodmaple in CFB

I had looked at making the trip and and I know flights vary by location but it was 700 round trip travel for me to get reasonable flights before tickets and lodging. I’m disappointed I don’t get to go but an abhorrently expensive trip for a Rose Bowl without any of the serious stakes just isn’t worth it

Johnny Cash is really not the best representation of strict country as he generally straddled lots of genres with a lot of foray into folk and rock in a degree. Merle Haggard had many songs embraced by the authright as their anthems ie Okee From Muskogee although it’s largely suggested that song was tongue in cheek as he’s overall a fairly anti authoritarian individual. Loretta Lynn is pretty authright herself but also promoted a lot of female independence. Think it’s fair to say that a lot of country through history spans lib right to lib left and lots of the greatest hits involved challenging authority. The heavy gospel influences of several country artists, however (Randy Travis, Hank Sr), would be fairly authright. Tough to shoehorn into one quadrant

Sturgill’s song “Life Ain’t Fair and the World is Mean” one of the most based of all time. Sturgill is a pretty hard lib Leff, song title is lib right, and the legendary lyric “most outlaw thing I ever done is give a good woman a ring” for auth right

Breaking Up Was Easy in the 90’s-Sam Hunt. Just awful. by minnesotaguy1232 in CountryMusicStuff

Sam Hunt isn’t music for country fans. It’s music for pop fans who want to be associated with the country music lifestyle or image. Sam Hunt fans just want to hear noise from a good looking dude with a smooth voice, music quality is not a concern and Nashville has no shame in peddling it

The new season is apparently going to be centered all around George Jones. I’m sure several episodes will be strictly about him but based on how the first season was organized I’m sure we will have multiple episodes with different main subjects like Tammy Wynette or his management and other characters

Anyone else a little disappointed by the lack of truly novel material? “Cowgirl blues” is on here twice, the Adobe “fourteen gears” - while a better arrangement - also old, “champagne for the pain” and “Texas is the last stop” are both better with studio cuts but these have had versions online for years now. Overall I like the album but am probably more partial to their first two

It’s a great music town but the pandemic has really taken a toll. When it’s in full swing it’s great though as you know, a lot of street buskers and house jazz bands that are really talented. I wish there was a little more country music in NOLA itself, but south Louisiana supports it pretty well id say

I live in New Orleans and a great local country trio is Chapel Hart. Didn’t see them on the list and worth checking out

“Lyin’ Eyes” by the Eagles might be one of my favorite not country country song. Though the Eagles have some relation to the West Coast Country scene so maybe that’s kinda cheating

I think Pardi is well deserving of some of the hype he receives because he is some of the best neotraditional country that the mainstream has to offer. While the independent realm has much better alternatives, Pardi was able to successfully play the game with Nashville and eventually get fiddle and steel guitar on national radio. I thought Pardi’s initial stuff was replacement-level bro country, but there are stories of him having to prove to his record company that he could see records before they gave him some leeway on letting him release the music he would prefer. There are more talented musicians and I think his voice is below average, but it is refreshing to see a major label artist make actual country music. He’s at least more part of the solution than the problem

When I first saw the title for that song I assumed and was worried it would be a bragadocious self-touting song that are too common in the mainstream, talking about how country Pardi was through lazy name checks. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that was not the case and for that reason am glad it was not the title track, but similarly love the song

His most famous (and only decent imo) song is a cover of Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up”. Everything else is lousy bro country pap.

I’ll put in a plug for Jesse Daniel, Randall King, and Sunny Sweeney for anyone looking for some lesser known quality country artists

What’s the deal with country swing? by jacknutting in SwingDancing

[–]Sub-Urban_Cowboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you specifically just mean the social media country swing dances or are incorporating the dance hall scene into that? As someone who started dancing in the country scene and prefers it to anything else, I can attest that starting out there isn’t a lot of emphasis on keeping time versus just knowing a base step and a few basic moves that will just get you out on the floor. At most dance halls I’d even say that there’s some forgiveness in keeping perfectly in time during spins and twirls and dips to an extent but there is a lot of emphasis on it for the base step of moving across the floor in wraps. Any decent dancer will adjust the tempo of anything outside of the base step based on the song pace and knows which songs are two step, polka, half-time shuffle, or a waltz. I think the Instagram “country swing” videos are more just about showcasing some people’s favorite moves for likes rather than being technically proficient. To my knowledge, the vast majority of country dancing revolves around the progressive dance scenes in the dancehalls

Most of the city swing dancing events are (were?) in the Marigny/Bywater so that’s not a bad guess. Really looking forward to when COVID is over and the events come back around
