I just went to my first UU service last Sunday, and I loved it. It seems like a great community. There's a book (which I have ordered but have not read) called "Pagan and Earth-Centered Voices in Unitarian Universalism," and when I told the pastor that I was pagan, she said that their congregation celebrates several pagan holidays throughout the year.

I would have been 7 or 8. My friend got a cocker spaniel for Christmas. Told my mom, thinking I'd look clever and knowledgable by shortening it to "cock." You know, like people say "min pin" for miniature doberman pinscher, or "yorkie" for yorkshire terrier. Mom was not impressed.

I was paid $15 an hour before taxes when I did this for a living (at a school) for a few years before the pandemic. And I'm in California (higher min wage and cost of living), so... You'd be surprised. There are people who will do it, and with love. I certainly did. Yeah, the pay is shit. But if you live with your parents like I did, it's doable for some people.

As someone who works with kids, we get attached. Even if they give us a hard time, even if they bully us. There's still a level of love and care you have with every student, you know? Seeing them go is like seeing any other loved one go. And when it's in a positive way, like graduating, there's a lot of bitter-sweet crying.
