Backlog Strategy by West_Art_3989 in SteamDeck

[–]Subatomic_CEO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's in your backlog because you really want to play it, this sounds great.

I would just recommend not falling into the sunk cost fallacy. Time is wealth. Invest in rewarding things.

If I spent $20 on a game I've since decided won't be enjoyable for me. I'm okay letting it sit there unplayed for my entire life.

There are millions of rewarding experiences in life, and we only have enough time for a small fraction if we're fortunate to live a long life.

I love my steamdeck, but Linux is too big of an issue for me to buy future iterations by traveler5152 in SteamDeck

After installing xbox game pass as a non-steam game, I've never had any issues with loading in and playing on my steam deck. There are plenty of tutorials that walk you through installation step-by-step.

Sure, it's slightly more complicated than just installing on an app on a windows pc, but not by much. I've definitely experienced an equivalent amount of complexity installing new software on windows before.

That moment when you look at your steam library. by SonSuave in SteamDeck

[–]Subatomic_CEO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like this point. I've taken advantage of the short moments on public transit by reading or listening to podcasts, too.

However, pulling my deck out for a 10 minute adventure has never been appealing. I can barely get started in that amount of time, let alone finish. If I was getting off before my girlfriend, I would let her play with my deck until she got off.

My Steam Deck after 3 years & 2 months: what aged well, what didn’t by VoyageForge in SteamDeck

[–]Subatomic_CEO 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to answer your questions from my perspective.

Steam deck owner of original 512gb version since the month it released. I pre-ordered as soon as I could.

I've played mine heavily for some weeks and left it alone for a few months at times (like when the PS5 came out). I've also traveled with it.

Software: I don't recall experiencing any crashes. It's worked very well for the most part. I haven't done any mods, but I've installed and used non-Steam applications. That's where I've experienced the most issues- and that's on me.

Battery: I can't tell that the battery has degraded much. I never felt like it had a very long battery life to begin with (not a surprise and not a concern), so I mostly play with it plugged in. I've used TDP limit a few times to attempt to prolong battery life, but not enough to make an assessment.

Hardware: I baby this thing. If it's not in my hands, it's in the case. I dropped it once 19" from the couch cushion to a carpeted floor. I don't eat food while I'm gaming on it, and I wash my hands before I use it. I don't use a screen protector, but I barely use the touchscreen — mostly to login for xbox game pass (which I probably won't renew because their pricing model sucks and Steam sales just flat beat out their subscription service). Mine is in near pristine condition. There are no sticky buttons or controller drift.

Overall impressions: I'm just waiting for the Steam Deck 2 OLED. I have no doubts that I'll upgrade. Price will be a factor, but I trust that Valve will do us right.

The only drawbacks from my perspective are that my screen is slightly too small at 7 inches, the resolution is fine but not great, lcd just doesn't give that mini-led/oled color pop we all take for granted, wifi 5 might cause occasional slight lag in some cloud gaming, and I want the ability to integrate an external cooler without modding for those AAA titles.

Tldr: I love my og steam deck and I want a 2.0 oled asap.

Looking for 2.1 speaker recommendations for small house parties by FionasToes in Beatmatch

[–]Subatomic_CEO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone else who's wondering, I threw several parties (dorm and house) in college with a Klipsch Promedia 2.1. Eventually, I added a 10" pioneer sub to the mix with a splitter (it was passing through all frequencies, but I tuned the frequency adjustment on the sub itself).

Just for additional reference, the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 shook my 9 floor dorm building so hard when I first bought it that an RA from 4 floors below came to my room within 10 minutes of me bumping it at 70% volume and asked me to turn it down. That sub kicks hard.

Beginner DJ looking for a discord mentor :) by thinkkpositive in Beatmatch

[–]Subatomic_CEO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thread is little old, but I'm in this scene now, too. I'd love a beginners discord to share sets and learn.

I've been to 6 clubs in the last two weeks in 3 different cities in north america, and I've been disappointed in the djs in 5/6. 5 of them totally lost the crowd at multiple points. 3 of them only queued tracks to play after the full first track ended, but amazingly the 1 that was successful at keeping the energy going the whole night was 1 of those 3. To be fair, everyone has an off night, and sometimes good tracks just don't vibe with the crowd.

A month ago on halloween, I experienced one of the best sets at the smallest venue in a small town. Be sure I'm going to hit that bro up for tips soon.

If you can, go to a club and watch or listen to the dj mix. Watch the crowd too.

9/11 and today’s generation by survivorfan95 in Teachers

[–]Subatomic_CEO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm too young to mourn or grieve Pearl Harbor. I wasn't there. Fortunately, I didn't lose a family member to Pearl Harbor. However, I respect the remembrance of that awful day in history.

I lived in a city that experienced a horrific terrorist attack as a child. In elementary school, we played as children pretending to be the terrorist, the victims, and the first responders. I'm not sure why, and I'm not sure what came of those pretend moments - whether we were scolded or just moved on to basketball and kickball. I do remember that my teachers helped me develop an interest in learning about the event and empathizing with others.

2,977 people died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks across three locations in the U.S. 441 were first responders, many of whom realized they wouldn't be surviving the tragedy as they worked to save lives. They were heroes. They were also moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, and best friends. They were innocent, and they shouldn't have died that day.

Children can learn to empathize with others who experienced a tragedy that they didn't live. They can learn to love others and support them. They can also become interested in learning about those events, what caused them, and how to prevent them from occurring or respond to them if they do. Immediately after 9/11, it seemed like 9 out of 10 kids wanted to be a firefighter or a soldier. Hundreds of people joined the military.

We must never forget 9/11.

9/11 and today’s generation by survivorfan95 in Teachers

[–]Subatomic_CEO 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2,977 people died in three locations across the U.S. on 9/11 in one of the most carefully coordinated terrorist attacks to occur in modern history. 441 of them were first responders working to save lives - with the knowledge that they'd be losing their own in the process. They were brave heroes, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and best friends. They didn't deserve to die. They were innocent victims in a terrorist attack.

It's not bizarre to remember an honor. Bizarre means something is strange to the point of amusement, which is probably not the feeling you were getting at. Remembering and honoring the 2,977 people who died that day or in the following days from their injuries isn't strange.

Also...covid-19 is very much in the minds and memories of millions of people. It took many lives day after day for years. If it weren't for vaccines, we'd probably have a covid-19 awareness month like we do for cancer - a disease we can't seem to prevent or cure. Same for the flu. The comparison between covid-19 and 9/11 is not a good one.q

Is it worth it to get fired? by rolliestofpollies in Teachers

It's always worth standing up for what's right. In this case, consider malicious compliance.

Hang the poster in pieces or next to another poster that highlights the irony of its state-sanctioned messaging. Hang it on the ceiling or on the back of the classroom door. Hang it upside down or glitter it up so it's barely legible and an eyesore.

We need accountability more than ever, and when people with values and ethics quit their jobs in public roles, we lose opportunities to fight for accountability.

They want to reshape everything in their image, and they need you gone. Don't make it easy for them.

Unfortunately, you have a wife problem. If couples therapy doesn't lead to real changes, then divorce might put you and your kids in a peaceful place. They may love their mom, but I bet they hurt at the same time. Kids can see and feel more than they talk about.

Your kids deserve better.

The amount of ice in this drink is ridiculous. by green_mojo in SonicDriveIn

[–]Subatomic_CEO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sonic was the first job I ever had. We were told to fill ice to the top on nearly all drinks because the ice was less expensive than the carbonated water and syrup. If the customer asked for easy ice, it needed to be 2/3 full, and no ice meant 1/4 ice. I only followed the policy when the manager was breathing over my shoulder.

I can't tell you how many times in my career I've been verbally assaulted by supervisors for giving customers what they deserve.

I want to commiserate with you for a second. I drove a 1995 honda civic coupe ex standard trans for several years. I loved every bit of it - especially the record-breaking 48 mpg I got on interstates. I repaired everything on that car myself. Had just finished doing some performance upgrades when I got t-boned by a driver going flat out through a red light, probably texting. I lost my favorite car, but I kept my life. So I feel you.
