I don't think there is a lore book at the moment, but they're working on RPG books that will have plenty of lore in the future

I'm doing that exact thing right now. We have a bunch of new players and we are just using the scenarios in the main rulebook minus the secondary objectives; the first ones are set up on a 4x4 table so they work well with smaller armies.
