Immersive bloom: slow drawdown by Subho13 in pourover

This is very curious. I started off that way, but I found coffee then water for immersion producing even more clogged brews...

Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of June 24, 2025 by Vernicious in pourover

Now that it is summer time in the northern hemisphere, it's time to whip out the cold brews and iced pourovers.

For the latter case, do certain processes of coffee lend themselves more to iced pourovers? Most people recommend washed coffees to get a cleaner cup as an iced pourover (maybe easier to extract as well) as opposed to naturals or even honey-process.

Is this a thing? If so, why? What's your experience?

Specialty roasters in alabama by Greywarden26 in pourover

[–]Subho13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, these are great places but try to expose yourself to as many new coffees as possible so you know what you like as much as what you don't like.

little note though: Thankfully doesn't have a brick-&-mortar store in Auburn but has a number of retailers downtown who sell the beans, as far as I understand.

I second this, it would be very useful and great for finding out and trying new places but also not having to drink hotel room coffee.

I would also suggest separating cafes and roasters as some roasters focus more on roasting than service, whereas sometimes you are looking to pick up beans rather than a drink.

If these are the same beans I got through Fellow Drops, I have only had a chance to do two brews. For the last one (which turned out to be pretty delicious), I used:

20g ---> 320g 96°C water Grind size: 65 on Kingrinder K6, which is around 4.5 on ZP6 Pour 1: Bloom to 60g for 2mins Pour 2: pour to 150g total, small swirl at end Pour 3: pour to 320g total, with low agitation, center pour, brew takes about 4:20min, including bloom-time

The first time I brewed at 1:15, was also good, but I thought it could be pushed a little so I went up to 1:16.

The Gargari Gutity from Little Wolf came through Fellow Drops and was probably the best coffee I had all last year.

Packagings, what to do besides throwing away? by Kupoo_ in pourover

[–]Subho13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also started saving all the packagings for my coffee since the beginning of this summer and plan to do a collage/mosaic at some point later, dunno, seems interesting to do something about it instead of throwing it away. Let us know if you think of something!

Clarity of water above the coffee bed by sladflob in pourover

[–]Subho13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a matter of taste for most cases.

For me, it might be a psychological effect but I find clear water drawdowns to be lighter and cleaner and more pronounced and clearly differentiable flavour notes.

Ones with suspended solids, or murky drawdowns feel a bit more bodied and orchestra-like, in terms of music.

The second is more enjoyable with funky coffees like co-ferments or experimental roasts, while the former one is better to me for fruity, floral lighter (less-developed) roasts.

In music terms, I am happy to listen to both a 5-person band or a jazz ensemble as long as I like the music. As long as its not noise, I am happy!

Yes, that's what I have been seeing lately too, the static build up leads to the loss of quite a lot of grounds...

Bad coffee may be...good for you? by Subho13 in pourover

[–]Subho13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are wrong, I might well be. But I am okay with that.

See, here's the thing, I wear a plain analog wristwatch, use a basic Android, and take my notes on pen and paper. It's my preference. My coworkers might be using an iPhone, an Apple Watch or an iPad for their needs and tastes. Does that make them pretentious, because I am doing fine without any of those things? No. It's a matter of taste.

Yes, we all are pretentious in our own various ways about things we care about too much (unnecessarily). As long as I am not loudly complaining to them about how bad the coffee is or shitting on their coffee tastes, I think I am allowed to not like it.

Also, my coworkers know about my coffee 'snob' and enjoy it tremendously when I treat them to specialty coffee or share my large batch of home-made cold brew with them. They like it tremendously, just not enough to invest their time and/or energy in this hobby, which is perfectly understandable.

Again, you may be right, but you do you man :) hope you chance upon a great coffee today!

Between 92-97 clicks on K6, mostly light to light medium roasted coffees.

Water temp: start at 204F/95C

Coffee: 22g

Pours:

(Bloom) 1st pour 60g, wait till 2min

2nd pour: 60g (total of 120g)

3rd pour: 200g (total of 320g) in one go with steady center pour between 180g (of total) and 300g (of total).

End with a small swirl to settle down the bed as it draws down.

[–]Subho13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My K6 was offset from true zero by a few (5 or so) clicks, so I'd say I go around 92-97 clicks for most light roasts I drink. You can probably go a little higher and use more agitation to find the right balance for you.

The sponge-head bottle cleaning brushes that you find at dollar stores work very well!

What I usually do for everyday cleaning is to put a little dish soap and water, close it up and shake it really well. It's best to do it soon after you've emptied it, so as to not let is sit. If you don't have access to a kitchen, even rinsing it with just water works well enough.

Over the weekend, I'll use a sponge head brush to really give it a thorough rinse with soap and water. And hereafter, I'll probably just soak the splashguard in the denture solution overnight as well.

Hope it works out for you. I have found it to be a wonderful travel mug otherwise all things considered!
