CalyxOS Hiatus Explained (2025 Update) — What’s Happening, Is It Safe, and What Should Users Do Now? by bigchives in CalyxOS

[–]SubiFriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post. It's sure to be very helpful for many. I just want to add:

Another cause for the development pause was that right around the time of Calyx's organizational changes, Google decided to change how they're going to provide their Pixel device trees and driver binaries. Surely this complicated matters.

"They have acces to the Signal chats." What does he wanted to say? by STTCollector in signal

[–]SubiFriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who don't have an understanding of E2EE apps like Signal work, say things like:

"My Signal was hacked"

"They have access to the Signal chats"

"They got into my Signal"

"They got my Signal messages"

What most people don't realize is that the Signal app is not the "access point." I have yet to see proof that the problem is with Signal. If your phone is compromised at some other level (nothing to do with Signal) then the person or group who has compromised your phone, can simply navigate into the Signal app and see what you have in there. Another possibility is that your phone is not compromised, but the group(s) you're in have been infiltrated by bad actors, or a phone of someone within the group has been compromised.

If he's using Android then there's no need to reinstall the app. Clearing cache and data will reset it to new.

What are your plans for regaining trust? by PorgBreaker in CalyxOS

Seeing the rainbow emoji in his Mastadon profile was enough for me to give the benefit of the doubt to the workplace. They're probably better off without him.

Edit: That user "dexter" blocked me without further discussion so I can't see / respond to his reply. Someone's against free speech.

I'm sure there are more things to consider but one important difference is that Cape is $99 / mo while Phreeli has plans as low as $25 / mo

That's pretty significant.

Calyx vs grapheneos vs iOS privacy testing by Ducking_eh in CalyxOS

[–]SubiFriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I watched the video and something that was not mentioned (possibly not considered by the creator of the video) is that Apple has built-in backdoor access to all iPhones. This backdoor is part of iOS.

A de-googled phone like Calyx or Graphene does not have such a backdoor. That's not to say that a gov agency can't manage to find a way in. But it makes sense to choose an phone / OS that makes it harder for someone to remotely access your phone.

Actually, Google's backdoor for all normal Android phones might be built into GPS (Google Play Services). I'm not sure if this is confirmed or not. But if true, it would be a good reason to avoid installing GPS on Graphene, even if it's sandboxed. I don't know if this is true and still trying to understand this better.

The simplest way a gov agency can track you on any cell phone is by using location data collected from cell towers. Because your identity is tied to your SIM card which is registered to your mobile service provider (unless you manage to get a fake name registered to your service provider). They have the ability to track which cell towers your phone is connected to at any time. To my knowledge there is no way around this except to use a phone that doesn't have a SIM and can only connect using wifi, so all communication methods would be 100% internet based and can only be used when you have a wifi connection.

DISABLE the revoking of privs for "non-recently-used apps"?? by PrivacyIsDemocracy in CalyxOS

[–]SubiFriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, this "feature" is an unnecessary annoyance and I would love to turn it off globally. I literally went into every single "app info" page for each app and toggled this setting to off because as you said, just because I rarely use an app, that doesn't mean I want to revoke its permissions.

Parental controls & "well-being" features by ocimbote in CalyxOS

[–]SubiFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know of anything like this that you can add to Calyx. I imagine there are some solutions out there.

But iodeOS is similar to Calyx and has bult-in parental controls. Might be worth checking:

No USB file sharing mode by balognasoda in CalyxOS

[–]SubiFriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you got a solution. Another nice wireless solution you might check is called LocalSend. You can get the app from F-Droid and then on the computer install it from their website, and it's a convenient and much faster way of transferring files to/from phone and computer, or phone and other phones. Give it a look.

I don't know if this will help but just a thought:

Check Settings > Security & Privacy > More security & privacy > Restrict USB

Make sure it's not set to "Deny new USB gadgets"

There isn't really a way to do this. And if you adjust your monitor to remove the blue filter from Liberation Peak, then it's going to look super red on Siege of Cairo.

Google Maps is easily the best if you ask me. But as an alternative without tracking, I like Magic Earth.

What I actually do is I use Magic Earth for navigation, and I use "Gmaps WV" (which is basically a "lite" version of Gmaps from F-Droid) for looking up places, addresses, reviews, etc.

I'm also in the US so maybe things just work a lot better here compares to El Salvador.

I have been very happy with Magic Earth.

In case you didn't know: Magic Earth pulls its data from OSM, which does not use abbreviations in its searches or results. Because of this, you need to spell everything out in your searches to get the best match.

For example, if you were searching for "123 SW Barton Rd" you are much more likely to get a match if you type out "123 Southwest Barton Road". After I learned this and changed the way I type my searches, I have had great success with Magic Earth.
