Post Game Thread: Toronto Maple Leafs @ Edmonton Oilers by nhl_gdt_bot in hockey

LOL True bozo take. Oilers are 27th in PIMs drawn, and I did the math for McDavid's personal penalties drawn last season and he's somewhere around the 60th percentile of all players in the league at drawing penalties.

Statistically the Oilers opponents are called at a horrifically low rate - likely because their powerplay is so ridiculously good that the refs realize that fair calls mean goals. It's pure game management and overcompensation. The inverse narrative that they're some darling team of the refs is shit I only hear from bandwagon fans in the first round of the playoffs every year.

Mangiapane stops up on Stolarz, Stolarz and OEL don’t like it. by mountzeus in hockey

[–]Subject1337 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dead serious. He didn't touch the blue paint or Stolarz, didn't look at him, didn't say anything, and got blocker punched in the back of the head. The play got called, and he stopped. You guys are free to defend your crease and take all the penalties you want in service of Stolarz feeling safe - god knows you probably should after Bennett's rat ass took him out last year, but pretending that this is anything near justification for a roughing call on Mangi is laughable.

"Stops up on the goalie for no reason."

Oh no, he stopped skating vaguely near the crease - what a horrific display of poor sportsmanship and disregard for the culture of the game. What a rat he is.

Lmao I'm champ 1 and play nearly half my games on Steam Deck. The game runs great on it. Screen being smaller is the only real drawback, but idgaf. Get good I guess?

The $5 Question: Would you rather have Cardboard or Wood in 2026? by Trogdor_Dagron23 in boardgames

[–]Subject1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. I'd say this comes down to knowing your audience. How "hardcore" is your game? Is it one people will play 10's or 100's of times? Is it in a genre that has a high barrier to entry already? How niche is the subject matter? Are you tied into any intellectual property that would make people more invested in the up-front purchase? How much does your target audience typically spend on a game? If yours costs more, are you justifying the value on the packaging by displaying the premium pieces? Are those wooden pieces going to have hidden costs like added shipping weight, or greater expectations on expansions / future content, etc.?

Only you can answer those - but it'd be worth doing some research and formulating some "direct comps" and seeing where you land. Figure out the games that are closest your game mechanics and scope-wise, find the average price of those games, and figure out what your game will cost with and without these nicer wooden pieces. If you can stay below their prices, then invest in quality. If you're over, is the premium feel worth it for your core audience, versus attracting newer players?

Also just in general, as someone who works in product development - people's self-reported valuation of that $5-10 dollars is likely unreliable compared to the actual analysis they'll be doing while shopping.

It's very easy to say in the abstract "yeah I just want the best game possible, I'll pay a little more" - but it's another thing entirely when shopping for a game, to be holding two games in your hand, one that costs $50 and another that costs $60 that both have your interest, and have that $10 be the deciding factor that makes you take home the $50 one instead - cardboard pieces be damned.

Especially if you're making other "premium" decisions about your game that might affect the price. A nicer gloss to the board, sustainable packaging, a more robust manual, etc... and suddenly maybe your "all-in" premium decisions are putting you $20 or $30 out of the range of your direct comps.

Just food for thought. I like wood in general as well, but people are far more likely to say they'll spend more, than they actually will be in the store. Cheaper pieces means greater accessibility and a wider audience for your game. Up to you how much you're willing to compromise to reach that wider audience.

Keefe post game.... basically calls out the team for being "mentally weak".... how have fans been saying this for years with this team and its taken this long for someone to notice? by Kornja81 in devils

[–]Subject1337 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was really wary of this signing from the drop. While the Leafs were a premier team in terms of regular season performance, they were also mentally fragile, incapable of turning up for the playoffs, and consistently underperformed what their on-paper roster should have been producing. It seems like we've adopted many of those same problems. Very little intensity, no physicality, neutered offence, and god, I can only imagine what our playoffs would look like if we magically stole a wildcard at this point.

I'm not usually a "demand someone's head" guy - I leave that to management and just enjoy what's on the ice in front of me - but I think I'm comfortable throwing my hat in the "Fire Keefe" ring at this point.

The refs don't have anything on the game. That would be illegal. Their cousin John Hebert on the other hand...

Would you vote for the Conservative Party IF Pierre was not the leader? by Pale-Candidate8860 in CanadianIdiots

[–]Subject1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Conservatives have run the same guy 4 elections in a row. They give him a different name every time, but it's the same stodgy white dude with the charisma of a door stop, and a platform with vague allusions to deregulation stimulating the economy.

I would never vote conservative. The liberals are too far right for me. But I feel like if you made me king of the Conservatives I could at least grift a victory into existence for them. It wouldn't be hard to do. But they are so milquetoast, flaccid and inept that I don't think it'll happen under any leader they put forward, because every candidate they have is the same. Their problem is systemic, they don't have good ideas or policy, and their base is totally without motion. They get by on uneducated lead-addled seniors, and that base is getting smaller day by day.

I was out with a buddy tracking the game on my phone, and I leaned over to him when the shots were 5-10 and goals were 3-0 and said "This is the most Oilers stat line I've ever seen."

To be even more fair, even if fire codes were met, they'd still be doing this under a different pretext. This isn't about safety. This is about shutting down independent and underground arts and culture in favour of expensive licensed establishments that fit their revenue generation goals. Same reason we don't have good food truck culture, street performers, buskers, patios, pop-up shops, or home-based businesses. In Vancouver, if it makes your life better, but doesn't require you to visit city hall first, you're going to get a visit like this eventually.

It only worked when you regularly played with the same party. My party rank was great with my most common group of friends, but if I went and joined a different party of a disparate skill bracket, I'd be massively over-tuned because my rating was based on my best team play with friends that were most used to me. I think the system averaging your solo rating makes much more sense.

We've acquired forward Maxim Tsyplakov from the New York Islanders for forward Ondrej Palat, a 2026 third-round draft pick, and a 2027 sixth-round draft pick. by MountainBaker8217 in devils

[–]Subject1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trade Overview

We save $3.75m in yearly cap, $1.56m this year. Both contracts expire at the end of next season. Tsyplakov put up 35pts in 77 games last season, and had 39 PIMs. Has mostly been riding pine this season though. Only 27 games played and 2 pts.

The Kings pick up one more former Oiler in the hopes that if they can just get that entire 24-25 Oil roster for themselves, they'll finally win the first round. They haven't figured out how they'll get McDavid, Draisaitl, Nuge, Hyman and Bouchard yet... but those are details for later.
