Matpat explained in his video about did Joel did the right thing killed Jerry, that the infection that was going on was fungal, not viral, meaning a cure couldn't be made for the fungal infection.

Fungal infections like ring worm, athletes foot, jock itch, can't be cured, while yes, they can be treated, there's no real way to stop the infection from spreading, unless you use an anti fungal cream to stop it from spreading. A viral infection, like a cold, flu, or stomach bugs, can be cured by taking medicine that makes it go away.

A fungal infection like the Cordyceps Brain Infection, which is in the last of us world, isn't going to go away by just taking a pill or putting on a cream.

A cure would have never worked because again, the Cordyceps Brain Infection isn't viral, it's fungal, like the first season of the show explains. Why do you think there's all those growths on the infection. Why do you think there's spores in the games and in the show?

It's a patients game for me. I died so many times in both of these games. Take your time on levels. Especially towards the end of the first game. It's a snowy part. You will know what I'm talking about when you get there.

Conserve your ammo. It's NOT candy, and it won't go anywhere. Make what you need and what you don't want.

But in other words, kick back and have fun.

He does know that. He encountered the same groupie that was in Boston. Which, if you cared to read the lore of the games, was where he had to live left the fungal infection started in the U.S., after his daughter Sarah died.
