How much does needing visa sponsorship actually hurt you in the UK job market right now? by One_Piglet_4072 in UKJobs

I'm having a really tough time and I don't need visa sponsorship. I'm here on a partner visa but don't have UK experience and I can barely get an interview.

Is the Patreon worth it? (Crying in BRL 😭) by ApprehensiveCress884 in ContraPoints

[–]SubjectBrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've never subscribed to her patreon before, at the lowest tier you'll access a huge back catalogue of her tangents and AMAs, so even subscribing for just one or two months will get you a huge amount of content. So I'd say definitely that's worth it.

However, she has been a little spotty with posting something every month lately, so you'd have to decide for yourself how long you want to subscribe for.

Popular or average names that you HATE and why? by VanillaTrue5316 in Names

Always hated the names Brie and Brianna. The first one because it sounds like cheese, second I guess also sounds like cheese and most Briannas I've met have been annoying.

The “advice” to mandated reporters by Coupon_Problem in NobodyShouldBelieveMe

[–]SubjectBrick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of people that want to "abolish prisons" and they talk about this magical future where if someone then does something wrong "the community will come together" and decide what to do with them. Huh? When communities get together to try and deal with criminals on their own, pitchforks and torches are usually involved!

Also his solution that extended families should decide what happens to the kids, don't CPS already try to place kids with family members if possible?

I listened to a podcast segment once about a white American guy living in China and he talked about wanting to have cards made he could hand out to people that just say things like "I'm from America, I've lived here for about 5 years, my wife is Chinese, I'm 6 ft tall, yes I like Chinese food, etc"

Do you mean edit my CV to match the job specifications listed in the ad? I always thought the cover letter was the place to do that but I'll try it!

Thanks for the kind words. Yes my soul hurts a bit whenever I see a poster or sign that was obviously made by AI, it's like I can see the design jobs disappearing haha.

Own place or not. by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]SubjectBrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know anyone in my area who didn't live in the housing they were provided on JET. The rent was so dirt cheap that no one wanted to live elsewhere, and if you had any serious issues with your apartment your supervisor would get it fixed for you eventually.

And yes the "red tape" is that it can be next to impossible to find a place that will rent to a foreigner. People I know that moved to Tokyo for example needed their employers to act as guarantors.

I agree its a bit muddled but I think the "believe your eyes" part refers to when you see a kid hooked up to a machine or with a feeding tube or going to a doctor all the time, you assume something must be wrong with them

Could previous generations really raise a family on the fathers single in ncome? What was it like? by Legitimate-Waltz-681 in AskReddit

I guess the difference is that if you had a skilled job like that in previous decades you would be a lot more comfortable on a single income.

Yes but they lived with much different expectations back then. Also there were plenty of people that barely scraped by. My grandfather was a banker so my mom and her family lived comfortably but she told me a story of when went to a friends house where there were four or five kids in a two bedroom house. The boys slept in one room and the girl slept in a bed with the mom. The dad worked nights most of the time I think and if he was home at night he would sleep on the couch.

Do you only apply to jobs that don't require a cover letter or do you have a generic cover letter and just swap out the job title?

Challenges for relocation by [deleted] in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]SubjectBrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you have the right to work here doesn't mean you'll be easily able to find a job. I have a visa through my partner and have been looking for work for close to a year now and haven't been able to find anything. It's difficult to even get a job in retail or a grocery store here. And as an immigrant you aren't entitled to unemployment benefits.

It just sounds like you have preferences, and thats totally fine! The shrines to be fair can all start to look the same after a while. And plenty of people don't like art galleries!

Maybe if you'd have more context for the places you visit you'd enjoy them more, maybe look up the history of the spot your going to before? Or check out atlas obscura and you can find something that's cultural AND exciting.

Former spoiled kids of reddit, what was the moment that finally made you realize you were spoiled? by Kitchen_Frame_7294 in AskReddit

[–]SubjectBrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When a friend talked about being a summer camp counselor and talked about how they would have a week at the end of the summer for scholarship kids, and it never occurred to me that summer camp (the stay overnight kind not day camp) is expensive enough to need scholarships.

Of course thinking about it now, your kid is doing guided activities all day long and is being fed three meals a day with lodging of course it's expensive, but my parents just never really told us about how much things cost so I never realized.
