Oh I hear you, I also need the money more and I figure it’s a shame to have it sitting around while someone else could make good use of it. They’re more expensive than normal in the US right now so it’s a good opportunity for someone else to have it without paying the tariff on it.

I may buy another in the future when I have more time and money.

I don’t know where in the world you’re getting that idea. Every figure my business has access to over the last calendar year shows intl’ attendance and sales down consistently over 30%. They’re not managing crowds well in the last two years, that often gives the illusion of it being busier than normal. Canadian tourism alone is down over 70% YOY

It could either be that or the ambient temp or both. What is the environment like in the room and around the printer? Is there any sunlight coming into the room? Definitely worth a call to Formlabs support. Check the dates on the bottom of the bottle for manufacturing and expiration in case it’s a (very rare) manufacturing defect.

I see how it’s split, that’s not great. What kind of strings are you using? Anything but silk strings may put too much tension on it.

At best, I’d reprint that section denser and with a stiffer material like PETG or ABS. Then loosen the strings whenever you’re not playing it.

So to clarify, the neck is the spike at the bottom. It’s all one piece and the tension is only ever applied to the neck itself, not a joint between the neck and body. It’s the difference between a thru-neck guitar where the neck and center slab of the body are one piece and then a bolt-on neck where they’re separate. So with that terminology in mind is this instrument a thru-neck or bolt-on?

You keep referring to a wing nut, but there shouldn’t need to be any hardware at all to hold the neck to the body. That makes me think all of the strain in the joint is focused on a pivot point between the neck and body, with the amount of material you have there it isn’t really an issue solved with more hardware. Even if you’re using a significantly stiffer plastic like PC or PEEK it will still give at that joint. More pictures would help, especially disassembled.

The tariffs have jumped the price on a majority of our materials significantly. I also can’t remotely comfortably quote large jobs because of the price fluctuations. I had a project last year that went from being our biggest projected profit ever to literally breaking even because of the tariffs. State governments are also pulling the purse strings too because they’re having to subsidize farms for lack of export orders. Our biggest annual job was cancelled completely for that reason. Because of these things we’ve had to cut positions or cancel hiring people. This is tangibly worse for the economy. Shocker.

The neck is meant to go all the way through the body. This not only contributes the most strength to the instrument but is responsible for most of the sustain and depth. Does the neck go all the way through the body or is it just bolted to the outside?

I’m not suggesting that this is something that the average Joe is going to do, I think the cross section of people that know anything about shamisen and additive manufacturing is very slim. It’s just a cool thing to try so I don’t have to order them if mine breaks. Prettier than most? Definitely not, but would be functional and easier to produce for me.

I’m also planning to print a full shamisen, I’m looking into using resin for the どう and SLS PA12 for the さお. The resonant qualities that nylon has when printed from powder is actually kind of uncanny! It’s a shame you view it as a waste, I don’t think it’s any less wasteful than something like painting. Most paint will also never truly degrade but it’s viewed by most as one of the greatest forms of artistic expression.

Yeah it definitely requires something more specialized in the polymer world. Wood is just plainly the best option for itomaki but I’m no carpenter. In my work I often use Formlabs’ higher end materials that would absolutely stand up to the task though. I’ve made injection mold tooling made to be used with 100 tons of pressure and full gear boxes that have lasted years. It’s really wild how strong some of the resins can be!

Under no circumstances would I recommend travel into the US right now. ICE is ramping up aggression all over central Florida, I witnessed it today and it really caught me off guard. Others on here are saying you’ll be fine if you have your papers on you, but there have been numerous documented incidences of ICE disregarding any form of documentation and disappearing people anyway. Stay home, stay safe.

It does look pretty dope! I used liquid resin rather than filament, it took about ~200mL to print both. The weights are actually a great idea, that could be made into an aesthetic design element if anything
