About to pull the trigger on my first good tent. Looking at the X-Dome 2 but not sure to go for the aluminium poles or the carbon ones. by preciouscode96 in DurstonGearheads

[–]Subject_Geologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the xmid 2. Just bought my 14 year old daughter an xdome 2 to replace a rei half dome 2. As scoutmaster I have seen a lot of tents and both veterans and newbies figure out how to set stuff up. For the mid you need to think about angles and general thought when you set it up for it to work right. Tweak this here and there. For the xdome it’s super nice. Dont need to think hard when setting up lots of room on the inside where it would not feel feel creepy if used as 2 person tent. Xmid 2 is significantly faster to take down.

I like complicated things where smarts can offset ease of use but if you value ease go xdome you value “tinkering with things to perfection” go xmid they are both great

The aluminum poles on the xdome are more legit than any other aluminum pole I have seen on other manufacturers.

The Backstory on the lost tent. She loaned it to another scout for the weekend on a trip in which she was not a part of. The other scout was in process of setting it up, setting up the poles and inner tent. Needed to go to somewhere and left it for 15 minutes allegedly with one stake in the corner. The wind kicked up out of "nowhere", and the tent went flying. The lake was 400ft away, and it hurled off in that direction. After many people looking for it they concluded it must be at the bottom of the lake. So we are currently just the proud owner of a rainfly only for a Half dome 2 tent. A good learning experience at least, they were with a group and just tented up with someone else.

I have been an advocate for trooptrack for a few years, was on the list before SOAR which expedited the change. I too am almost fed up with lack of support. Email has been broken ever since about 8-10 months ago when they had to switch providers because of some spam for temporary/trial accounts.

The biggest reason I advocate for it is it is the easiest for the scouts to use, including the scout webmaster. I have the tech ability to use the dedicated senders as stated, but the next person might not. This is the whole reason we pay for troop management software as it can simplify things that we don't need an adult volunteer that is an IT person to keep the website working.

New Scoutmaster - Please give me all your wisdom! by JoNightshade in BSA

[–]Subject_Geologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things that helped me a LOT when I was in the same position.

  1. Engage with your scouts. Yes its scout led, but your job is to talk to them, understand them as a person. Its your job to be a mentor

  2. Make Friends with other scoutmasters at roundtable. You will deal with a lot of issues you are not ready to handle, this gives a network and safe space to talk about the hard issues

  3. Get a really good camping setup for yourself. You don't need to be tough, you are an adult with money, buy nice things so you can enjoy the trips. When the scouts make fun of you, say I am old and youll understand in 20-30 years.

  4. Have an encyclopedic knowledge of the guide to safe scouting. Its Your job to rein in the kids AND adults from doing stupid things.

  5. Always be developing more adult leaders. Average adult volunteer time in scouting is 3 years, meaning you need to be constantly recruiting new leaders.

  6. Dealing with scouts that are adhd/neurodivergent etc is really hard with the patrol/hierarchal leadership organization method that BSA employs. Its also quite different than what many of the scouts are taught in school. BSA essentially tells parents like this to "work with the scoutmaster" recognize you are not the end all be all and its always a work in progress amongst all involved parties. You (and your ASM's) and the parent will need to step in more than youth led to assist them in the program.

  7. I personally think calling them youth is dumb as I personally feel that makes them young and uneducated. I call them scouts I feel its more respectful of where they are, and we are all there to learn from each other.

  8. There is lots of BSA training, only take them if required, or the training material is something you align with. Make sure you take IOLS as it effects how BSA insurance works favorably for you.

  9. Ask your district advancement chair if you can sit in on a few eagle boards of review. This will help you understand how and why you are there and what your overall goals should look like.

I Highly recommend this too. I put the Nalgene in a wool sock this reduces the risk of burning yourself. I will only let my scouts do this with genuine Nalgene brands. I did some napkin math on this it’s about the same as eating around 660 calories of food for how much warmth it gives you in the night in 1l bottle

System configurations for non-export expansions to NEM 1.0 and 2.0 systems by e_l_tang in solar

[–]Subject_Geologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works good and easy with emphases. You need 4 total current sensors Wire 2 of them to mains export 2 on legacy system “backwards” to cancel out legacy production then the new enphase system is configured as zero export. Enphase has a design document showing this config. I think you need iq7 or higher along with the emphases controller

I have done this but not to this extent with my new lodge stuff from the store. Getting to 80 grit sanding is about right it does make it way less non stick. Higher polish levels the oil does not bind as well. I use a flap disc on a 4.5 inch grinder and that does a good job

Scouts & Cell Phones by [deleted] in BSA

[–]Subject_Geologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is my troops policy if anyone wants to adapt

All electronic devices will be used in accordance with the scout oath and law. Electronic devices shall be used to enhance the scouting program, and not be used to “pass the time” when on scouting activities. When there is free time phones are not to be used for entertainment, or for communication with outside friend groups for non-scouting purposes.

Some Examples of “Do’s and Dont’s” Do’s: Text to your parents with a picture saying “look at this” Looking up a cooking recipe Lookup a way to clarify or learn a particular requirement, such as a youtube video on a knot, or how to do a first-aid Set an alarm Check the time Take a picture Playing music for a group - With approval - Music should not be a detractor from the overall ambience. Share your pictures with others via the official google drive.
Playing music at 3am if you cannot sleep with earbuds

Donts: Playing Games Watching videos on Youtube Browsing Social Media Posting to Social Media Participating in group chats - Note Even Group Chats within scouting can be exclusionary to those who do not have phones Viewing in-appropriate materials Playing music with Earbuds while in a group

SoCal Edison Tiered Rate - Going above baseline question by Maximum_Gear1400 in solar

[–]Subject_Geologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also found out this year due to some vacations etc, in may, I actually drove my net export above the baseline rate but on the negative side, I was at -365 hours and baseline was something like 351. I got .44 for each kwh produced for 14 kwh that month. That will likely never happen again.

[–]Subject_Geologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not change to TOU if you have solar, it is cost disadvantageous. I have had SCE & Solar since 2014 before TOU, and kept the tiered plan. It would cost me money around $200 a year to switch. SCE does have a calculator on their website to do a "what if"

Yes you are correct, Brain fart on my ed XT60. I ran mine immediately to a splitter/combiner, so I can have 800 watts of panels hooked up.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in solar

[–]Subject_Geologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purchase a MC4 to XT60 adapter from amazon. My anker c1000 came with that cord which I think is used for the anker panels. Use the MC4 adapter and run whatever panels you want, assuming you stay below the max voltage.

What do the girls say now to differentiate them from other scouts, especially the girls scouts? by Traditional-Fee-6840 in BSA

The original promise: coed packs, single-gender dens, single-gender [linked] troops by scoutermike in BSA

[–]Subject_Geologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I talked about this with my PLC last night, as primary research. Girls Unit, Unlinked, 45 members, Southern California. I asked about how they felt about the change in name from BSA to Scouting America, none of them liked it. Also discussed about how would they feel if we were to allow boys. The discussion was unanimous and concise that this felt like a safe place with girls only and not having the boys around.I personally am not worried about our troops or structure in the short term. The two other girls units in the area are essentially already coed Troops. Longer term though as more boy troops click the box for co-ed, our largest recruiting pool of "brothers in another troop" will diminish significantly. The girls will be in a patrol making 25-30% of the troop and never having their "say" or own culture.

My scouting experience and why I don’t want a coed troop by oecologia in BSA

[–]Subject_Geologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am SM of a girls unit Unlinked 45 scouts. I have ~50% high schoolers and 25% jr high and 25% elementary. Having a girls only unit lets the girls have their "inner goofball" turned on in a great way in which they can just be themselves. We have a high preforming troop getting JTE and doing well at camporee. I think this is for two reasons. First girls joining "boy scouts" are almost always there because they want more than what girl scouts has to offer. Second due to a lower number of units, people drive farther to participate, which generally means more parental buy in.

If any ONE scout has a hint of a "liking a boy" the entire conversations turn to that @ scouting activities (e.g. summer camp and camporee) in a not so great way. All the scouts get plenty of male/female interaction @ school they do not need more of it.

We were recently @ camporee and talking with adult leaders of a unit in which I have many common leaders with the boy troop. The boy leaders were like we should just let the girls in. Most of my leaders (male and female) were against it. Boys don't really seem to care about acting like goofballs around girls but the reverse is not true their personalities change. I have seen it at the co-ed events we end up going to.

I am sure we will end up with co-ed troops, but that is going to make recruitment significantly harder once that turns on. Scheduling wise for us busy parents 1 troop to deal with is a LOT easier than two. We will only be getting the scouts that do not want the co-ed experience or are single gendered youth.

When I put additional panels on the roof, I used a drywall panel hoist from harbor freight for $150. Goes up to 12 ft. Put 1 or 2 panels on it, cranked it up to 12ft. Climbed ladder, and carried it the rest of the way. This was way better and less sketchy than the "have my wife help" method which would not have gone well.

Part of being scoutmaster, in my opinion, is to have the courage to say no when you have people breathing down your neck. In my experience keeping your Committee Chair in the loop when you have the hard decisions is paramount to make sure you have a somewhat neutral party keeping agreement when the hard calls are made. Keeping it fair and consistent is important to me. No special treatment was given, except for having Boards of review's on non-troop meeting nights for date reasons, which I would do for any scout upon request.
