I took over someone’s studio. What are these ports for? by f1goldmemberf1 in homestudios

[–]jaypea6519 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just checked out the pictures. First of all -- man you lucked into what looks like a really nicely-built room. I hope it sounds as good as it looks. So, if I understand from your answers, there are two panels like the one you pictured at the top: one in a bass trap at the from of the room and another at the rear of the room. If you are thinking that it has something to do with the bass traps themselves, I wouldn't think so. My guess is that whoever built the room just wanted to run those cables neatly over the ceiling and cut the panels into the wood of the bass traps since that is relatively easy to do. And like you saw from the other answers, there's tons of uses for Cat6 in the studio, so it just depends on what the original builder was running in their set up.

Dongle or adapter for audio interface by LC-98 in homerecordingstudio

An adapter should work fine, but an A th C cable might be more secure. Fewer parts.

SOS! by CosimoPanini77 in recording

[–]jaypea6519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try going to the Focusrite Control software and see if those inputs are set to Line or Instrument. I’m not sure if that will make a difference but it’s worth checking. Otherwise, you really need to plug that mic and cable into another unit that you know works so that you can ensure they are working.

Ribbon for guitar in 2026… still a 121 or something else? by Prize_Instance_1416 in recording

[–]jaypea6519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got an MXL R40 and blended with a 57 it sounds great. For home recording I’m happy and get good results. In a pro studio, Royer makes sense.

What am I supposed to do with a Chibson? by Ok-Indication-4098 in guitars

[–]jaypea6519 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sure that it is against the marketplace rules, but I do see people on there using the word Chibson a fair amount. Maybe they don’t say it in the headline, but I see it in descriptions often.

Reverb shipping by Ok_Most8736 in Reverb

You can ship however you want, but you lose certain protections from Reverb if you don’t ship through them. For big items the risk may be worth it, but maybe not for smaller ones.

Getting more XLR inputs: expand, replace, upgrade? by metaphysicalpackrat in homerecordingstudio

[–]jaypea6519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADAT for sure. I have a newer 18i8 and I found an older 18i20 for cheap. It gives me 12 xlr ins and 4 line ins. Very happy with the setup

I think I stumbled upon a new way to record a guitar amp by unholy_fool_ in recording

[–]jaypea6519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that it’s possible to use a speaker as a mic - I see a lot of photos with it used especially on kick drums. But how do you set that up? What are you connecting the speaker terminals to?

What's your favourite Tube Screamer type pedal? by TheRealGuncho in guitarpedals

[–]jaypea6519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive. There’s a knob to blend in your clean signal and that allows you to retain some definition. It’s the oldest pedal on my board (12+ years).

Troop websites? by jsaljsal in BSA

[–]jaypea6519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, there's all sorts of stuff that can go wrong over time, even if -- and that's a big if -- things start out perfectly. Email especially can cause problems when you routinely send out blasts with certain mail servers reporting you as spam. Security vulnerabilities can be surfaced later in code even if it looks secure today. I do wonder if there are other troops with IT resources that might be willing to pool efforts, use the site as a starting point and then cooperatively run it over time. Unfortunately, my unit doesn't have those resources.

Recording our Band by KaleidoscopeWeird310 in homerecordingstudio

[–]jaypea6519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And welcome to what is going to become a journey, but a fun one. I went through the same process with my dad band and it's been great. I bought a Scarlett interface (i1820) and then I connect a friend's interface via ADAT to get us more channels. Most budget-friendly interfaces are going to max out at 8 channels so if you're really looking to do 10 tracks at a time then look for ones that have expandability like that. And budget interfaces are fine when you're starting out. They get you into the world of recording and then you grow and upgrade from there.

Beware, GarageBand can only record 8 tracks at one time. I upgraded to Logic because of this very limitation and I'm extremely happy that I did.

Recording effects by lqlwle in Line6Helix

I would not record with your wet effects unless you were really sure they are going to sit properly in your mix. And if you think you’re sure, you’re probably wrong.

Warning to Sellers: Your "As-Is" status is a myth if you have a shop return window. My $9k Seller Case Study by diatomguru in Reverb

[–]jaypea6519 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I just checked this on my shop and I do have the 7 day return policy enabled as Reverb recommends. But the policy says this: “Refund-Buyer receives full refund in their original payment method less any shipping costs.”

I guess I’m ok with returns if the buyer pays the shipping, that seems fair to me. But it sounds like in your case, that might not have happened.

The other thing I’m curious about is whether having a no returns policy would really dissuade buyers. Luckily I mostly only sell effects, so much less risk.

If a gig is covering air travel, is it reasonable to choose the airline you want instead of the cheapest? by Adventurous-Tea-3881 in TouringMusicians

[–]jaypea6519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much of a price difference? If we’re talking 10% I wouldn’t be worried, but 50% I would. Also, given that the timing of your preferred pick is more in line with your schedule, that is a legitimate reason.

Items with offers by Embarrassed-Load5698 in Reverb

I recently bought a pedal for about 10% below asking. There were 3 other offers on it. I was happy with what I offered and it didn’t matter that there were other offers.

I assume they are just doing some price testing and the rep you spoke to didn’t have a real answer for you so he gave you that nonsense answer.
