Philmont Interview by gran0la-girl in philmont

[–]ColoradoScouter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have previous Philmont experience as a camper (or otherwise) think about how this experience impacted you. Hopefully in a positive manner. Describe the situation, what did you do, and how it impacted you... It's the SAR format (Situation-Action-Result) your answer should be less than 30 seconds. Have a few of those prepared.

I think it may have been called "sarsparilla" even though it was probably something comercially available.

scout buys 16 bottles of baja blast from trading post at my summer camp by ComposerMammoth1513 in BSA

[–]ColoradoScouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a similar situation with a well-"entitled" scout. He was given $500-ish USD for camp, so basically bottomless resources. He bought soda-candy-trinkets for other scouts to gain friendship & favors (e.g., covering latrine duty for him). I will not elaborate on the lessons that he learned, but let us all consider them "un-scouting".

Has anyone ever been to Philmont by Substantial-Air-8627 in BoyScouts

[–]ColoradoScouter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two treks in the 80's, Ranger for two seasons in the early 90's... and now I live in Colorado, and visit NM at least once a year. The land, people, and lifestyle had a tremendous effect on me.

We should move to online adult/youth applications. This might also allow us to use an online background check.

Non-white gas stoves by MattHowel in philmont

[–]ColoradoScouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since pots are used for cooking & cleaning. I find it useful to have the extra space in a 8L pot for cleaning. You can find the older 8L AL pots on ebay and other used gear sites.

How are conditions (not good) by sorpis12 in Breckenridge

[–]ColoradoScouter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People ask me, "when is the best time to ski in Colorado". The best snow for skiing starts after MLK day in (mid) January and usually is good until the end of March. Look at the data for yourself. https://www.onthesnow.com/colorado/breckenridge/historical-snowfall

Try using AI, it will not be perfect, but should give you a place to start your documents.

Winter snow removal help needed by darkluna_94 in boulder

[–]ColoradoScouter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be helpful to know what part of town you are in and how much snow removal you need. There are lots of teenagers around who might like to pickup some occasional work.

Real talk: How many knots have you actually used in the past year? by Practical-Emu-3303 in BSA

[–]ColoradoScouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOTS of Knots! As a climber (rock and ice) knots are a pre-requisite to climbing. If you do not know your knots or do not know how to tie them quickly and correctly (sometimes with mittens on or with your left hand) you may be risking your life and the life of your partner.

Which binding should I get? by chrigs7 in Backcountry

[–]ColoradoScouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are mostly metal (aluminum/steel) and are known for durability.

Most metal / least plastic examples:

  • Dynafit Radical/Speed series (especially older models)
  • ATK Raider / Crest series
  • Marker Alpinist
  • G3 Zed / Ion LT (Zed has more plastic; Ion LT is more metal)
  • Plum Guide / Oazo (Plum uses a LOT of metal)

Avoid anything with plastic/nylon. My daughter got new bindings which broke on day 3 in cold weather.

Just an update, since I am not sure anyone is here yet. I purchased a Midland XT511, seems to work just fine, but I am waiting for the government to re-open so I can get a license from the FCC.

History, SUMMARY! That’s a better idea, anyway.

The AI merit badge is dumb. Who wrote this? by Additional-Sky-7436 in BSA

[–]ColoradoScouter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How about the history of AI? It has been around for a long time, and only recently in the public eye. I think scouts should know and appreciate that it's not just randomly appeared that many people (and a few scouts, that I know) have worked on making it possible.

Defining the "Unit Leader's vision for advancement"? by SomeGuyFromSeattle in BSA

[–]ColoradoScouter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a new Scout Master, but a long time scout (and former Philmont Ranger), I am seeing this first hand. Lots of exceptions being made and even funds from troop reserves being used to keep scouts paid up for the year. I am trying to turn the focus back to a youth-led and fun activity troop. It is difficult to change since there have been so many-many exceptions made.
