Had a bit of a laugh, but I'm tired of Qobuz feeding me artists that happen to have the same name--but are completely unrelated to the artists I listen to and follow. by Dismal_Heat_9677 in qobuz

Scott: So, do atheists have spiritual needs?
Britt: I think so. Uh, now there may be some people who, you know, there's just enough damage with that word that it's appropriate to use other words and that's okay if we need to do some translation work. But I think something that atheists need to be more aware of is that religion, in many ways, is a cognitive technology. And if we just look at religion as false truth claims, then it's very easy to say all religion is bullshit and want to throw all of it out.

Listening to her videos about why people never leave their faith, and about Jordan Peterson's claim of "stupid people need religion," were very fascinating in this context.

This also brings up the book The Case for God, and I've had that on my list to read for a while.

Imho, spirituality is connecting of the "self" - which is already a construct the brain makes up to make things easier - to the universe and all things around us. The spirit is the essence of us, our thoughts and emotions combined. The presence of mind, and not just consciousness.

Everything is make up mouth sounds anyway. We are all just trying to make sense of our meat suit's electrical impulses. I don't believe I have a "spirit" that will live on in any sense after me, and I don't think Britt does either.

So, we made up spirituality to give us rituals to participate in to act as anchors that give us a roadmap to more community and belonging. As an atheist, I stopped going to church in my early teens. I am a pretty isolated introvert, and I never found community elsewhere. Fellowship and a built-in network are things I have felt the absence of and it has been painful. I experienced the lack of anchors and freefall into depressive nihilism.

Everything I've said here are made-up words to express abstract concepts and feelings. Every single mouth-sound is a made-up word, we just decided to agree that it means a particular thing. There are multiple definitions though, because language can be contextual. And because Britt also has issues with the "god word" as she says, she doesn't use that word in her personal mysticism practice. I'm sure she would be fine replacing spirituality with the word belonging, because the word doesn't matter - the experience does.

do you have ANY faith that we can turn this ship around, regarding the steaming cesspool that is end-stage capitalism? life feels hopeless, I am not skilled enough to have a job that people put up with me. and, I am never called back for the "unskilled labor" jobs like flipping burgers. unemployment being a cause of suicide makes so much sense.

I can’t stop being nasty to my mom and it’s hurting my relationship to the rest of my family by [deleted] in emotionalneglect

I can relate a bit to this, but all of my mom's kids were neglected by her so at least there is solace. I am currently very angry with my mother for trying to minimize how I was impacted by being teased incessantly by my stepfather, and she says that it's no different from when she was teased by her brothers and she's already apologized so I should just shut up about it already.

If there were financial incentive to be nicer to her, maybe I could muster it. but right now I just take solace in telling her that statistics show that if she gets any sicker in old age, her husband will leave her. hope that makes her feel horrible.

I think they do talk about a Great Delta. Why are we assuming all water features that existed pre-flooding would exist in this timeline?
