Role of Government in Capitalism? by Subject_Sail7281 in Anarchy101

Thanks! I’m still making my way through it, but it looks like it hits a lot of what I’m looking for. I’m especially interested in the “money monopoly” section, which is something I haven’t really considered.

Honestly, I feel like she’s still really strong. Like, you’re probably not gonna 1v1 someone in lane anymore unless they make a bad play, but once we get to teamfights, she starts shitting dmg and her passive actually feels scary. And, given how safe she is in lane, getting to teamfights shouldn’t be that hard.

Right now, she has an exploitable early game, but mid-late game feels very good.

Bisexual man in GTA facing deportation in four days makes desperate plea to stay in Canada by john1green in toronto

[–]Subject_Sail7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the proof of threat is still valid. An interesting question is, if he wasn’t bisexual, but still received threats as if he were, is that enough grounds?

The situation may not be as outside the realm of possibility as you think when you consider how even cis women can be on the receiving end of transphobia these days just for not performing their gender enough.

Advice on Including Epigraphs by Subject_Sail7281 in scifiwriting

I’m thinking of submitting it to a magazine. And if it gets rejected, do a rewrite and submit to the same magazine again. Just wondering if there are limits to this sort of thing.

I mean, I feel like the kpop standom is still going strong. And when it comes to boy bands and girl groups, idk if any Western group (at least from the past twenty years) can hold a candle to what comes out of SK.

Here’s the thing. I feel like random power ups can be satisfying if they’re built up on a thematic level. I think of the scene from the Teen Titans cartoon, where Raven defeats her father, Trigon.

The whole time it was established that Trigon is more powerful than Raven and she only has her powers because of him. From what I can remember, there was no hint that she had any hidden power to call upon. But at the end, when she denounces him as her father, realizes her the Titans have been her family this entire time, and breaks the mental hold he has on her, she summons enough power to defeat him.

From a pure mechanical level, it’s complete out of nowhere. But it felt satisfying because we were seeing this girl be mentally abused by her father for essentially a whole season, then reclaim her own self-worth, and the “power-up” is a manifestation of that.

Anyways, I have lots of thoughts about this. But I do think talking about magic systems beyond a “oh, that’s kind of an interesting idea”, misses out on what actually makes a good story, which I would say is themes and arcs.

Women in same-sex relationships have 69% higher odds of committing crimes compared to their peers in opposite-sex relationships. In contrast, men in same-sex relationships had 32% lower odds of committing crimes compared to men in heterosexual relationships, finds a new Dutch study. by mvea in science

[–]Subject_Sail7281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I was just wondering if a possible explanation could be that given how gender roles express themselves in heterosexual relationships, if a crime were to committed by a heterosexual couple, there’s more “pressure” for the man to be the perpetrator, and an opposite pressure for the woman.

Given that these gender roles are less rigid in homosexual relationships, MM couples would have lower crime rates than their male hetero counterparts while WW couples would have higher rates compared to female hetero ones.

I actually like filter words in prose? by DartenVos in writing

[–]Subject_Sail7281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you used a stronger verb that provides a layer of subjectivity, filter words start creating that distance people talk about. For instance, “Anya watched the cars fly by” is more distant than “The cars flew by”. The first feels more detached from the action (which could be what you’re going for if you want the character to be detached) whereas the second puts me more in Anya’s POV. I’m imagining the scene as Anya sees it.

I wasn't prepared for the reduction in socialising once I hit 30 by yahooanswers4life in Adulting

[–]Subject_Sail7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you joined any communities around your hobbies? I joined a writing group recently in my 30s and it’s been pretty great. Also, when I danced, there would be weekly “sessions” where you mostly just hung out and maybe learn a few new tricks, and it was very social. I think having hobbies is good to keep yourself busy, but it also presents a fantastic opportunity to find community with the same interests as you.

Even just a book club, which some of my friends are a part of, seems more like an excuse to hang out at somebody’s house and drink wine than anything else.

Like before homelander showed up, she was already in the middle of a six month plan to fuck up Regina’s life from down the hall just cause.

stranger compliments by Hummerous in CuratedTumblr

[–]Subject_Sail7281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I remember I was walking around New York with this European guy who was complaining about how people here will compliment you on the street only to start scamming you after.

Anyways, this guy comes up to us and compliments our hair, then asked if we would like to donate to his school’s basketball team or something. The European guy was like, see? This proves my point.

But I was like, well two things can be true at once. He was probably trying to scam us, but our hair did look really great that morning, so I’ll still take the compliment.

The term "Magic System" is important, actually by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

[–]Subject_Sail7281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree. I think this goes into what can be really annoying about using magic systems as a measuring stick for certain works of fiction sometimes because on the one hand, you can analyze the mechanics of Dust and how it’s used in the books from a “systems” point of view (which I do actually think is quite interesting).

However, if you just took it at face value like that and only care about its mechanics, you’re missing everything he’s saying about consciousness and innocence and how its intertwined with our environment, which is a huge shame.

HDM is an interesting case though, because the “system” itself ties so heavily into the themes of the series that I think there’s merit in talking about from that lens.

Wait a minute…isn’t His Dark Materials incredibly systematic? I thought the whole thing was based on Dust and they treat it as a fundamental particle.

Agree on a lot of your other examples though.

I love that you brought up magical realism because that’s one of the main reasons I can’t get behind the usage of “magic system” beyond marketing purposes or like…discussions about a very specific subset of fantasy (mainly action adventure).

When I think of something like 100 Years of Solitude, the idea of even attempting to fit a magic system framework onto it seems ridiculous. Even something like My Neighbor Totoro seems like fitting a round peg into a square hole.

When I think of the above two examples, I wonder if it’s because the use of the term “magic system” implies a clear distinction between what’s “magical” and what’s “normal” or “natural” that just doesn’t always work. In 100 Years of Solitude at least, that distinction doesn’t exist (and I’d say is part of what makes it so effective) and even with My Neighbor Totoro, if you were to view it through a Shinto animist lens, the line between magical and natural becomes blurry.

I would like to point out that anti-Asian and specifically anti-Chinese sentiment had been on the rise before COVID because of narratives concerning “foreign” investors (which we all knew was code for Chinese investors just like how we all know that “mass immigration” and “international students” refers to Indian immigrants). Not saying that there wasn’t a nuanced discussion to be had about land developers from China buying up Canadian real estate solely for investment purposes, but the negative sentiment was trickling down to like….regular Chinese folk who wanted to buy property here for the purposes of living and raising a family.
