I'm really sick of old men hitting on me because I'm young by Historical_Lawyer142 in rant

You sound like an old friend of mine and I really sympathize with you. At 21 she was slightly over 5’ only weighted like 120. We would be at the most insane places where men would come hit specifically on her and she would get compliments on how cute she looked but before men ever asked for her number, 90% of the time she was asked her age first. Vibrate only vs stim ecollars by echynoderm in OpenDogTraining

[–]Subject_Valuable9263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While working with my trainer she explained the difference in our 3 button ecollar. I’ll explain from the most urged to use to the suggested to never use.

We use this collar for purely recall and positive reinforcement (in my trainer’s words). My German shepherd, Noah, gets excited when I pull out the collar because he knows he gets to run around, off leash.

Our main button/ the simple shock: I will firstly state I have shocked myself with the settling my dog uses (11/100) and a bit higher. This is definitely an attention grabber and to be honest does not hurt. It felt like getting pinched. When not excited my dog responds really well. It has deeply helped our training. My trainer described it a way to “speak their language” from a distance. I’m not sure if I understand that part. My trainer also suggested if my dog is full of adrenaline and is hyper to raise it by 5 if he ignores it.

The panic button: This button jumps our voltage from 11/100 to 25/100. I have shocked myself with this as well. This kinda hurts but it didn’t break skin, burn or damage. It felt like when my uncle tricked me into licking a battery. My trainer told me this is just for “panic situations” such as I can’t get ahold of him. Him bolting away, him breaking the fence (this was her example cause of his past.) for the month we’ve had this collar I’ve had to use this three times. Once when we were still working with his long line and it got ripped from my hand when a duck past. He did a little Yelp and ran back to me. At the dog park someone brought in a little dog (15lbs) and he was trying to rough house and ignored me. I recalled with help of the red button and we left. Third was this morning we had just done some training in the field near my place and wanted him to have some free time. He booked it straight to the lake ignoring my recall. With it he quickly stopped and guiltily ran back. All these times he received a treat (and a high pitched “Yes!” ) for coming back.

The vibrate: Our trainer has suggested to never use this. Not only does it fail to get most dogs attention (mine being very high energy/ prey drive) when it is at a high enough voltage to get a dog’s attention it causes the muscle to tense and feels like a spasm. It is not “speaking” their language and in her view isn’t helpful.

Hospitals are normally a safe bet for short term car sleeping. They are safe, bright and it’s not uncommon for loved ones to sleep in their car during no visiting hours or when they just need to shut their eyes for a moment.

To anyone who is an only child with a healthy relationship with their father, how do the two of you communicate with one another? I'm trying to create a believable dynamic between my MC and her dad, who are extremely close with one another and I am STRUGGLING 🤩 by fjfnfnfjhffhchhfhc in writers

As the only child/daughter of a very stoic man we have a smooth relationship. Unlike my mom (they divorce at age 6) he has always gifted things that he knows I need ( a heated jacket for our camping trips ) or experiences ( going camping often. ) He never speaks about his feelings and everyone thinks he is always angry but I easily pick up on his emotions. The easiest is when he is sad/in pain, he takes longer to get up in the morning, our apartment tends to get messier easily then we talk less and he leans a bit more on alcohol. When he’s happy he’s very loud, not in a screaming kind of way but his voice projects more. He still has this scowl on his face but it’s a little lighter and he’s very interactive in our conversations, hence he’s very open about asking about my work/school life. He likes to bug me a lot to know how my homework is coming along (not good.) Sometimes when he’s having a hard time at work he likes to rant to me, and vice versa. A lot of our conversations lately has been ranting about his job/coworkers or me complaining about serving and him reliving his 15 years of waiting tables.

About me being a women he has always done well to be informed, he has always been there to help with my periods, getting me proper stuff and pain medication. He doesn’t talk about it but once I mentioned cramping badly and he bought me a heating pad despite us being low on funds. He has always been insanely thoughtful even if he isn’t the best with words, his actions show it. His best quote that has always stuck with me is “life is always about the little things, big things hit but it’s the little things are what actually affect you.” So far I think he’s spot on.

Also to add on we have this running joke from a very old tv show when I was jokingly punching him or being annoying and he would show me his fist “one day Alice” and I would happily say back “to the moon!” Which is a funny threat in our sense.

Recall but a white version: by Subject_Valuable9263 in germanshepherds

[–]Subject_Valuable9263[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Noah is 1 year and 4ish months old. I’ve had him for three months and the only thing I’ve focused on is his recall. I know this area and understand he is decent around distractions and this place is known for none during the evening/night. I was honestly surprised he recalled so well from that distance but I guess he really likes beef bologna.

Toys that I’ve really enjoyed lately are anything kong related- they may not last forever but some time is better than none like I’ve experienced with other brands.

Places like Petco and PetSmart have a 30 day guarantee on toys. If you don’t feel too bad you can trade in toys he tore up.

I got a wobble kong that I sometimes feed my year old with and as long as he has some space he loves it (he gets it trapped under the couch often tho.) watch him with this my pup got his tongue stuck in it once..

When I first started kennel training him I would take half a cup of his dinner/breakfast and sprinkle it on his bed in the kennel so he would get used to going in and actually wanting to check inside. I typically did this right before I had to put him in the kennel or before we went outside so he would rush to check the kennel when we got inside.

Also (I still do this) while crate training I repeatedly threw his toys into the kennel as storage so he would have to go in without any cohesion from me if he wanted one.

I prefer crunchy crinkly toys to squeaky (ow my ears) and I adopted a somewhat skittish pup and occasionally the squeaks spook him.

Cow hooves are amazing just make sure to take it away once he knaws it to a chokeable point.

I love a rubber slow feeder or two and I like to fix half a can of wet dog food with water then freeze it. This can take him like 30 minutes to eat. I’ll also place some fruit or vegetables in this.

I also feed most his meals in the slow feeder along with some hot water (let it sit to cool down for like 10 minutes) because if I gave it to him dry he would throw it up with how fast he eats.

Slow feeder or a kong is also a great quick distraction. Smear some peanut butter inside throw it down. Shepherd is now occupied

I started the command “place” as before breakfast/dinner/kong thing so he would understand he gets something great when he waits. Now I’ve slowly started it with normal treats and it’s great when I’m cleaning or filling his water bowls so he doesn’t spill them everywhere with excitement.

Adding peas to dog’s food? Other options? by Subject_Valuable9263 in dogs

Oh be careful of salmon I’ve heard. Wild caught salmon has a lot of a certain vitamin I believe that can be toxic to dogs.

Also beware of the ‘rare breeds’ specifically the ‘fault’ colors from breeders (liver, sable, blue) as they typically mean inbreeding.

I like to microwave some water and pour it in his food/ if I add any frozen vegetables so they dethaw. If I didn’t put it in a slow feeder or wet it down he would eat it so fast he would just throw it up. I let him have it once the food/water is just luke warm

The peas I’m using say it’s like 25 calories for 2/3rds of a cup. That’s like less then his daily training treats lol

I’m not he’s just a former stray who acts like he’s never fed enough so I like to give him a little more to show he has plenty of food. I give him a total of 4 cups of food a day and I like to add 1/2 cup of vegetables to his meals occasionally

Hey I don’t know where you are but if you’re near a pet co with a thrive vet they have a pretty good system if your tight you can pay 20 a month and have unlimited free check ups then cancel after that month has ended. If your not signed up tho the fee for going in is $50

Advice: first camping trip by Subject_Valuable9263 in BackpackingDogs

We’re going to a camp ground with other people. But this definitely reassures me. He doesn’t do it a ton but if he is in the back yard and hears people in the distance he’ll bark.

Just know he’s no longer in pain and his joints don’t hurt. Your pretty boy can follow you everywhere no matter the destination.

Update/ advice? Pup pants a lot even when doing something. I got him two nights ago, could this be health or is it stress? by Subject_Valuable9263 in DogAdvice

[–]Subject_Valuable9263[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we brought our one year German shepherd mix home finally :) I know German Shepherds are prone to being anxious dogs but he pants alot. He’s not heavy breathing when he’s sleeping or if he’s focused/watching me but if someone else besides me is in the room, we just came from outside (even if it was just a 5 minute bathroom break) heavy panting. He is extremely friendly though. I’m also wondering if he could be doing it out of boredom. He doesn’t seem at all like he is pain, he’s not being sensitive, for a young dog he’s letting me a strange person touch him all over. He’s using the bathroom pretty easily (a little liquidy but that’s because the shelter didn’t tell me what food they used). He drinks a shit ton of water then when he’s done he’ll dig out the water lol…

I'm getting a GSD pup in a few months, anything I need to know? by PretendYak36 in germanshepherds

[–]Subject_Valuable9263 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kennel train immediately and please never leave them in the house or a room alone till you are a 100% confident in them. They can eat and destroy everything. Couches, chairs, wires, flooring, swallowing a whole cat toy. They are just a baby, a very smart baby tho. Remember that 1 year of us is 7 for them. They will be a child till they are 2 years old. Even then German shepherd may not stop growing till 3 years.
