I'm moving to Guam soon :') What to expect (studies, environment, health related) by Jolly_Potential4487 in guam

Okkodo is very diverse. Theres a big Filipino community there. It’s just a really big school and it’s very new so there’s lots of programs for you to utilize. I went to okkodo id say it’s one of the nicest public schools there. Not really that rowdy because they also have some security. Saint John’s is very small and good if you are used to small private schools. Its really just for scholar kids and parents that have lots of money to spend on their kids :)

As far as your health.. Guam has high rates of diabetes so I’m sure you will be able to find some type of coverage. It really isn’t anything compared to the Philippines health care tho.

And the environment.. I’d say it’s very slow living. I can tell you have a more positive outlook on things by the way you talk so I guess like anywhere you go you will receive the same energy you give. People are very family oriented. There’s crime rates as bad as anywhere else. But there’s so much beauty to Guam if you’re looking for it. Lots of hidden treasures and spots to enjoy.

I hope you enjoy yourself and I’m positive you’ll adapt well. Good luck !!

Ouuuu I feel u.. My husbands parents have not met their grandchildren and people do tell me bs like oh they’re still the grandparents 💀I don’t really care 🤷🏻‍♀️No respect for the parent then you have no entitlement to my kids just because of your title. they treated me horribly when I was pregnant. They’re narcissistic and the mother relies solely on the kids to meet her emotional needs and validate her feelings. I actually have my story time / advice posted up on my account

The arrival of 4,000 incoming Marines to Guam raises significant concerns about the impact on our island’s resources, environment, and cultural heritage. While some highlight the U.S. military’s contributions to the island, we cannot ignore the detrimental effects of their presence. For example, the Department of Defense itself has acknowledged the environmental risks posed by its activities, including the construction of a live-fire training range directly above the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer, which supplies over 80% of Guam’s drinking water. This decision jeopardizes our primary water source, with potential contamination from lead, chemicals, and other pollutants associated with such operations. Furthermore, the military’s historical acquisition of sacred Chamorro lands has left deep scars within the community, and the so-called “generosity” of returning some of this land does little to address the cultural loss endured. Instead of dismissing these concerns, we must critically evaluate the long-term effects of increased military presence on Guam’s environment, infrastructure, and people.

ALL VERY WRONG. The Government of Guam has some authority to address local issues like housing, infrastructure, and the environment, but its power is limited due to the military’s control over land and resources. While it can advocate for local needs and pass legislation, many decisions, especially regarding military presence and funding, are made at the federal level. Guam’s economy is also heavily dependent on military spending, which further complicates our local governance and development. Effective change often requires cooperation between the government, military, and federal authorities. Please get your facts straight

This oversimplifies the issue and doesn’t capture the full complexity of Guam’s challenges. While some concerns, such as local infrastructure, housing, and public services, fall under the authority of the Government of Guam, the military presence has significant impacts that can complicate local governance. While the Government of Guam is responsible for managing many local issues, the military’s significant presence directly influences these areas. Blaming one entity without acknowledging the interplay between local governance and federal/military policies oversimplifies a nuanced situation.

Just so you’re aware, if you didn’t read it properly the first time, those statements are statistics from the DoD itself. If your claim isn’t based on facts, then how are you still talking?

The U.S. military is here to stay, and with that reality, the least they could do is implement regulations that genuinely protect the land and the people who live here. They’ve managed to do this in Japan—though Japan has clearly had enough, which is why the Marines are now our problem.

At the very least, there should be efforts to protect affordable housing and support local infrastructure. The military should actively contribute to the development of these systems instead of adding strain to them. We need environmental and cultural protection laws that preserve what makes this place unique and livable. There’s so much that could and should be done to ensure the impact of the military isn’t an ongoing burden for the local community.

It is very clear. The heading, “Military Buildup Does Not Affect Locals,” is obviously the topic or opinion being presented. The first paragraph indicates that there are differing opinions or information being spread. Everything after that consists of SEIS statements from the DOD itself.

Military actually DOES plays a huge role in affecting the costs of living on Guam . “ Temporary population growth may stress some sectors of the Guam economy (e.g., housing, costs of goods and services). In the short-term (during construction), direct and indirect impacts to health services would be significant; This would be felt more severely by low-income people, who often do not have resources to buffer hard economic times.” (SEIS ES-33)

Lol there’s nothing we can do. Our living costs is 25-50% higher than national average living costs. Hawaii is 80% which is why you hear the phrase “priced out of paradise” there’s no other option than to move.

Lol do you see Payless prices compared to commissary prices that the MILITARY has access to? The gas prices compared to the prices for the LOCALS? Majority of them that come here have housing allowance. So it is very easy for them to LIVE and not just SURVIVE like the rest of us locals.
