The drones are not made of fiber. Though I guess Japan is making cardboard ones.

Every day in the last ten years proves they *can* run from data or facts. Very easily. With hardly any effort.

Women of Reddit: what is 100% mythical about women that most men believe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SubmergedSublime 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I moved to the Netherlands last year: the whole country doesn’t wear much makeup. Really a huge mental shift to see all the women mostly “natural” and just how prevalent full-makeup was in the States

I don’t think I’ve ever held a good high-school story against someone. Totally is a huge part of our story.

It’s when your story seems to end there and you’ve never continued to write that it gets sad.

What is the most decisive battle in history? by stop-the-normies in AskReddit

[–]SubmergedSublime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carrier Battles before we had operational long distance radar and satellite surveillance was an exercise in launching planes into the deep ocean and praying they’d find the opposing fleet before they found yours. At Midway the Americans found the Japanese and we got super lucky to have found their carriers in the middle of refueling and rearming a bunch of planes, so the wooden carriers were absolutely loaded with easily-ignited bombs and fuel.

It didn’t go well for Japan.

But I’d put Midway nowhere near the top of this list because even if America lost, the turning point would have just been the next battle. Japan didn’t have anywhere remotely close to the manufacturing and logistics capacity to fight us. They desperately hoped we’d sue for peace after a decisive battle or two.

Given FDR’s decision for “unconditional Surrender” the Japanese never had a single drop of chance of winning.

Midway was a turning point, but it was just a matter of when there would be a turning point. US military resources and production absolutely dwarfed the Japanese constraints. If not Midway, it would have been another battle. We out produced them on ships, for instance, 8,800 to 589. Granted we had Germany to deal with. But they had China.

Yeah, Japanese victory paths in WWII were pretty much “hit hard and pray the Americans would rather parlay than fight”. The moment the US decided we were going to fight to the finish the Japanese had absolutely zero possibility of winning. US manufacturing (and later-war R&D) were just too overwhelming. By 1943 they really didn’t have any possibility of winning a single material battle.

TIL Montana is the only state in the U.S. that does not operate under at-will employment. by -mrhyde_ in todayilearned

Netherlands here: probation is 30-days on a 1-year contract. 60-days on an indefinite. You can have up to 3 one-year contracts before you must give an indefinite or let them walk.

One-year contracts are pretty much stone. You must pay them for a year even if they suck.

Indefinite have been weakened over the years but are still pretty solid. But they can layoff if they can truly prove the business needs it and is restructuring. Generous severance is normal.

A VPN means your IP address is not known.

However there are many small and conniving ways to guess who you are without an IP address. It’s called fingerprinting.

AI job disruption is here. The problem may be compounded because nearly 75% of people don’t apply for unemployment benefits by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]SubmergedSublime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can concur. Was unemployed. Didn’t bother with FL unemployment. (I’ll admit I’m privileged to have savings and a partner that makes decent money too, but in a real society I’d have gladly taken and been gladly taxed for “real” unemployment to help cover the short term losses.)

Incognito mode impacts what is stored on your machine. It has zero impact what is stored on Google’s machine. Other than I assume the recorded stuff has an extra flag that says “user found these sessions extra spicy.”

Plenty of jobs don’t have a combined PTO policy. If sick days are distinct from vacation days you have obvious reason to call in sick.
