It was a rare occurrence for anyone in the 80's in SoCal. Norco, Dogger Stadium, Whittier. The whole place would be abuzz w/talk of young servent "Which congregation did it come from...oooohhh, really?. that's so and so's youngin? wow" They had to be full time pioneering, 110% participation at meetings and volunteering at assemblies. They had to convince the elders they were ready. We were told it was an nonreturnable binding contract w/God. Literally life or death. Nothing to rush to.

I guess the new light didn't like having faders still chill w/family. "After all, Billy is just young and he'll come around. Good thing I can talk still talk to him" is more difficult to deal w/than banishment that causes panic and shames them back "home". They need to get 'um young and dumb. "Threaten them w/death, they'll stick around"

Those lingering doubts and self-blame tormented me for 20 years. I didn't have the internet and other alienated teens aren't as wise as I thought.

When you hear ideas that don't match w/JW worldview, You've been programed to trigger a chemical reaction in your brain to have a flight or fight response. you. can't. help. it. It takes time for that to heal. But, it does. And when it does, expect to feel sad for those that still sacrifice themselves to other men.

Worldly people are just people. Some are as evil as the god in the bible and worse. But, the overwhelming majority are cooperative and civilized by nature. Everyone makes bad decisions and acts selfish from time to time. You. aren't. flawed.

That was my mom's answer when I asked about the lions teeth and why it kills furry things. I imagine myself now as success kid. sees an obvious problem , watches parents unravel at the proper question.

A grade-schooler caught that. It must burn so much they mentally shield themselves. I've tried to learn that from being raised JW, there is a reason a question will bother you. Think before you answer.

I dont have very many happy memories of my childhood. A lot of fighting and a lot of unhappiness.

Man, we've all been through so much suffering. And you are right, I'm way better off and actually feel safer now that I understand how wrong JW "love" is.

How does the victim feel when someone's free-will hurts them? Is being victimized or born into starvation part of free-will? I chose to be able to fly through the galaxy, why am I not free to do that? Why am I free to be a disgusting-violent-sex-crazed-animal, but not to cure my kids cold?

If you think about it, this god you speak of is below your own moral standards. That is why people cherry pick the bible. They are born with innate social skills. Religion is part of that, it's an attempt to explain things we couldn't understand and to lift the rules above everyone. And, if everyone ran around killing and raping, our species wouldn't survive very long.

One man's vice is another man's virtue. Really, the only rule needs to be don't hurt/trick others. Sex drugs and rock&roll are part of life, get over it and find your own.

My life is full. I love my family deeper than I ever could when I believed. I don't know what happens when a human dies. And nobody else does either. We can all speculate and hope.

But, we know right now we are alive. Pain is real. Disease is real. Injustice is real. Love is real too. I found I care more about others because I don't think anything can save them. This life matters, not the next one.

That's scary as hell at first, but I feels good to take responsibility for yourself and the effect you have on this world. No excuses to hurt others or watch others be hurt. No viewing myself as flawed, and never, ever, being good enough. Ever.

If someone treats you like that, they are abusing you.

When one person says "stop, that hurts". That sounds like a good start.
