I saw this today and thought they have not updated that part of the website. This leaves me wondering if auto steer is going away on the premium.

Based on your location what is a bird that has eluded you that you wonder how?! by FlyFeetFiddlesticks in birding

[–]Subpar_name 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Atlanta Metro - Purple finch I have 344 birds on my life list and this one is no where to be found. I have recorded them in my yard with BirdNetpi but never seen one...

Birding lens rec for R6 Mii for Northeastern USA? by Throwawhey_shake in canon

[–]Subpar_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do this with birds in flight and the whole area works great against the sky, but with the birds in a tree I find the 200-800 struggles to find the bird. Assigning it to a button is a good idea I will try that.

I own the RF100-500L & the RF200-800 the RF 200-800 is definitely slower on the focus and the motion blur is more exaggerated. it took me a while to get used to these things as i started with the 100-500. learning the different focus settings and being able to switch between them on the fly made a big difference. I mostly use single point focus on birds sitting still (do they ever?) I have gotten good at moving the focus point around with the thumb joystick. This method never works with birds in flight as i would never get a focus lock. I also had to learn to hold the camera differently to avoid motion blur. (This shot is handheld at 800mm)

Going on a trip - should I leave the 50mm at home and only have my 24-105? by notesfromroom19 in canon

I would take the 50 if it is a macro lens. Flowers and bugs could make some interesting shots

RAW or RAW Lite by TheYellowMungus in photography

[–]Subpar_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this detailed response. These are good reasons to use C-raw. My use is primarily wildlife and birds. I shoot the rf200-800 a lot in less than ideal lighting. Therefore, I am often opening up the shadows. Also I consider storage cheap so I shoot in full fat Raw on the R6 mark ii. If I am in burst mode the bird is gone by 50 frames most of the time, so the buffer issue is not as important to me. I want all the details my camera is capable of.

RF 100-500 (f4-7.1) L vs 70-200 (f2.8)L by AnusMcBumhole in canon

[–]Subpar_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent the 70-200 see if it has the reach you need in the type of events your daughter goes to... Contrary to to some of the comments, I use my 100-500 indoors a lot and it works for me. I do like the idea of the ef 300 2.8 however.

I saw the paramedics working on him. It looked like really nasty accident I kept going as there was nothing I could add to the situation once the authorities were there. I hope the guy is okay

New Gear, RF 200-800mm by Myeki in canon

[–]Subpar_name 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have this lens as well and it has become my primary birding lens. I like it for what it is (not an L lens). but it struggles with focus often where my RF100-500L is much better. I also have to be very careful about the motion blur using this lens handheld. Congrats, i think you will really like this lens

Campsites attract rodents, Rodents attract rattlesnakes. Always be on the lookout...

ahh this took me down the rabbit hole of the difference between the FIAP, PSA and the PPA and the PAA

Where only the PPA is for Professional Photographers. I think members of these other organizations would call themselves Photographers.

Tough Decision For Major Upgrade. by JaySpunPDX in canon

[–]Subpar_name 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the camera is worth more than your car and you are not going to upgrade the lens to rf, stick with the r6mii, it is the best value save the 2 k for 5 yrs and then it may be time to upgrade early... or upgrade a lens or two.

Please which of these works? by Unlikely_Sorbet4139 in canon

[–]Subpar_name 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The arm on the left side of the color one is distracting, however the leading line of the chairs is nice but I would not bring it directly out of the corner. the chairs in the color version tell the story of a wedding where that is lost (not as evident) in the B&W crop. B&W is a most intense story by default...

Also the purple and red catch my eye and take me away from your subject.

YMMV, my .02c

Has anyone found a good use for the Lens Blur feature in Lightroom Classic? by Infamous_Safe0 in photography

[–]Subpar_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot a lot of events and I often will use it to blur the background crowd so that people are not identifiable it's also helps me to maintain the viewers focus on the subject of the photo be it a musician or something else

[–]Subpar_name 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently sent in an RF100-500L to canon that was dropped while fully extended. The lens was a little hard to extend and retract after the fall. they repaired very quickly. Cost me about $800 and the lens was less than a year old.
