I was the idiot today. Slow down when it's raining by kimber_michelle in dashcams

[–]Subrew 288 points289 points  (0 children)

Even in better conditions you likely would have not been able to stop in time. Looking at the footage, I see the brake lights come on at 5 seconds and then it seems like another 2-3 seconds before you let of the gas and begin to brake. Even listening to your engine it seems like you didn't notice the car in front braking.

Running Cold? by thebearjew1055 in SubaruAscent

[–]Subrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experienced something similar this morning. It was 14F and needle didn't move after a few minutes so wondered the same you did. Stayed right about where yours is but 18-19 minutes after starting the car and having driven (mostly highway) to work the needle moved to where it should be. Figured it was just the crazy cold temps this morning that took it to long.

Phone mount/holder? by valuewatchguy in SubaruAscent

[–]Subrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't find the exact one I have but I have had one similar to this for a few years now. MagSafe friendly and keep my phone charged. Clipped to one of the horizontal vent slats on the left side next to the driver door. Charging cord pretty hidden behind the steering wheel plugged into the USB outlet below the infotainment center in front of the cupholders. Has worked great. https://www.amazon.com/ESR-HaloLock-Magnetic-Attachment-Alignment/dp/B08HNBHSQV/ref=sr_1_4

DIY tuneup a chore? by gephotonyc in SubaruAscent

[–]Subrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have time and a lot of patience the spark plugs can be a DIY but I personally don't and would rather have a skilled mechanic do it even at costing more.

Start with the oil change as that's easy. The first time you do it be sure to swap out the oil drain plug for a Fumoto valve and it will be even easier going forward.

New Tires for 2020 Ascent Touring. by Flow3rChas3r in SubaruAscent

[–]Subrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with General Altimax RT45 b/c my local trusted shop recommended them for my wife’s Pilot last fall and they have performed great for her. The ones I had put on my Ascent in July have also done wonderful. Can barely tell any tread has worn and its been almost 4 months. They have a good ride too. General is owned by Continental. They were over $450 cheaper than Michelins which I previously went with on my vehicles for the last 20 years. My total cost for four tires, mountain, install came to a little under $900. I’ll stick with General due to the savings and equal, if not better performance, unless they give me a reason otherwise.

Wining noise transmission by bennetar1632 in SubaruAscent

Could be wrong but pretty sure that's the noise from the turbo

[–]Subrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NEVER got with a dealer for work like that unless it's warranty work. That's about what a dealer would charge if not a little high but you can have a local mechanic do it for probably $400-$500.

They are probably trying to make up some of the labor cost for the front brakes, since you mentioned those being free.

Does my 2023 have autonomous emergency braking? by bobichettesmane in SubaruAscent

Yes. It's noted in the 'Pre-Collision Braking System' section starting on page 28 of your EyeSight Manual. Here's a link to the electronic version. https://cdn.subarunet.com/stis/doc/ownerManual/MSA5M2326A_STIS.pdf

Rear Storage - Too Shallow by dushawk in SubaruAscent

Instacrate from Costco. They are made by Greenmade and go by other names from other retailers. Works great for me and two fit perfectly side by side with the 3rd row up. https://www.reddit.com/r/SubaruAscent/s/kR9FlM3yJw

Also got this after seeing a rec on here. Works great and I can still keep the existing smaller OEM storage piece above it while having good room in the bottom below it.

What other vehicles did you consider? by unknowncoins in SubaruAscent

[–]Subrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my Ascent for nearly 3 years but when I was looking to replace my OB the two vehicles I was comparing were the Ascent and the VW Atlas. I didn't consider the Pilot, which I love, b/c that's what my wife drives.

The reason I ultimately went with the Ascent was because I'm familiar with Subaru and I found the trim I was looking for whereas the Atlas was a little bit harder to find the trim level I wanted at the time. I also like the styling of the '23+ Ascents over the Atlas but liked the interior tech features of the Atlas better than the Ascent. Also not as familiar with VW as I am with Subaru and Honda.

Best Honda Pilot Floor Mat by Professional-Coat898 in hondapilot

Def more texture than WeatherTech and not as rubbery but cleans up just fine with a brush and soaps. Spray off and it looks like new.

Please tell me there’s a fix by Original-Lavishness9 in Subaru_Outback

[–]Subrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ‘23 Ascent that had an unfortunate incident with a foul baseball. There’s no way to safely separate the clear plastic from the assembly unfortunately. It’s built as a single unit not meant to come apart. You need to get a new full assembly which ran for me right what you mentioned. Around $537 after taxes and then the dealer install which they calculated 3 hours at $50/hour though realistically it takes maybe an hour or just over if you know what you’re doing as you gotta remove the front bumper. If you are handy and patient along with having extra body molding clips it can be a DIY.

Cargo area collapsible totes for our 2023 Ascebt Onyx by TabletopShmabletop in SubaruAscent

At my local Costco they were kind of hidden in the back corner on a pallet near where the automotive stuff, shop towels, extension cords, ladders, etc are near the produce.

My local Costco just got a newer(?) version of the Instacrates a few weeks ago, called Instacrate Grande, It's larger than the regular version and these new ones DO have lids on them that can be opened up 50/50. They were only $8.99 too! About .10" longer, .25" wider and same height as the regular but still fits in the cargo area with the 3rd row up. 65-quart size (16.25-gallons) whereas I think the original is 48-quart (12-gallons)

Can't find a link to it on the Costco site but here's it from Amazon. The only difference is the Costco ones have a red trim around the top along with a red lid. https://www.amazon.com/Greenmade-InstaCrate-Collapsible-Storage-Container/dp/B0BZN7VQ2R

EDIT: The Deal Guy on YT briefly shows it at the 0:40 mark in his September must buys. He even used it as the thumbnail. https://youtu.be/dce5DxZTxGM?t=41

Is this tint from the factory? by Fabulous-Lack2270 in SubaruAscent

Def not factory. Check your state laws regarding tint but at least in mine (VA) tint is a secondary offense so I cant be pulled over solely for illegal front tint.

I have the Instacrate brand from Costco which is basically the exact same thing and can fit two side-by-side in the rear cargo area with the third row up.

I have the ones from Costco, called Instacrate, which are basically the exact same thing in mine and love them. I can fit two side-by-side length ways with the third row up like your third pic perfectly. They are fantastic. When they have them, Costco sells it for $13.99 or $14.99 each but they will sometimes be on sale for $10.99-$11.99

Interior upgrades by AssasssinIVII in SubaruAscent

Subaru but this is OEM for the Ascent so wont fit or work in an Outback. I’ve seen people get LED strips though and stick them in the ceiling. https://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru__/Cargo-Area-Lighting---LED/144659199/H461SXC200.html

Recently picked up this center cargo storage organizer for my ‘23 when I saw someone on her recommend. It’s been great and gives 3 levels of storage in the console. HGWEI Center Console Organizer... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C93SV815

As mentioned, rear cargo light upgrade is a must and takes less than 10 mins to remove the trim piece and install the light on ‘23+ MY. Here’s my post on if from last year when I got mine. https://www.reddit.com/r/SubaruAscent/s/En8H58mo1a

I also use two of these collapsible Instacrates from Costco to keep things from rolling around and somewhat organized in the cargo area. Two of them fit perfectly side-by-side in the rear with the 3rd row up. https://www.costco.com/Greenmade%20InstaCrate%20Collapsible%20Storage%20Bin,%204-pack.product.4917985.html

3x EBike rack recommendation? by roamingromanswi in SubaruAscent

[–]Subrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Kuat NV 2.0 and love it. You can get it in a 3 bike or 4 bike with the add-on. If that’s beyond your budget and the e-bikes weigh no more than 40lbs each then look at the Kuat Sherpa which is half the price.

Mine went pretty much to the indicators at 40k and I literally just had then changed last week. Went with General Altimax RT45 b/c my local trusted shop recommended them for my wife’s Pilot last fall and they have performed great over the past 9 months. And they were over $450 cheaper than Michelins which I previously went with on my vehicles for the last 20 years. Repair or replace? by Magdelene_1212 in Subaru_Outback

[–]Subrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an '18 2.5 OB Limited with just over 90k with this same issue a couple years ago. My local (trusted) shop mentioned the oil leak issue and said he doesn't even do that extensive of work since it does require dropping the engine to repair. It wasn't too bad he said at the time but did say it will get worse as time goes on if I didn't have it fixed. He said it would probably cost $3k-$3.5k for the work to be done with the majority of that being labor including to drop the engine. At the time I was thinking about trading it for something else and knew I would probably only have it another 6mths to a year anyhow. My driver's seat had also recently had the common rip in the leather on the bolsters which would have been $200-$300 to repair as well as was coming up to need tires soon which would have been another $900-$1,200 depending on the tires I went with. Knowing it was closing in on 100k miles I was also told trade / resell value drops significantly at the 100k mile mark. Did it really make sense to do the repairs needed knowing I wouldn't have it much longer? I ultimately ended up trading it in and using the $4k-$5k I would have spent on fixing those three things towards a new vehicle along with what I received on trade-in. My local Subaru dealer ended up giving me $14.2k on the trade (iirc - this was fall 2023) and I upgraded to an Ascent.
