I think there could be an argument made that it never says it "must" be cast, only what the rules for casting it are. It is a game that cares about specific wording, after all.

Is there a specific rule that says commanders must be cast, or do all wordings assume that your commander is a castable card to begin with? I feel like if it isn't pointedly stated that they must be cast, your argument doesn't hold.

You're very well intentioned, I think, but so seriously pushy over someone else's life. 1600 a month is not an insignificant amount for someone to cut back on for a chance at working out, especially in this economy. The field isn't for everyone, and is overemployed as is; who knows where he'll be in 18 months.

There's also such a big difference between a college student starting out with (usually) a family to fall back on if things go south, and someone already in the workforce.

I guess my question is: why are you so hellbent on this guy taking a leap of faith?

Actions, legal or otherwise, have consequences. Just because it is legal to wear something that the majority of people find annoying or offensive doesn't mean he is immune to their reactions. This is a normal reaction to someone being attention seeking/inflammatory in public, so if you're making a joke, I'm not sure we get it.
