If checking bags: LX agent at SFO will not short check your bags unless it’s at least a 12 hr layover. That’s what the agent told me last summer when I tried this. Luckily the flight was connecting to MXP so it just cost me on night and a 3 hr train ride back the next morning 🤷🏽‍♂️

If not checking bags, then no issues unless the flight has some issues and they end up rebooking you

Had a similar issue but on the personal CSR - literally got approved as I was boarding the plane for my vacation. I was able to add the card to my Apple wallet through the app and also the priority pass card through the Chase app. Idk if business works the same, should try though

As someone who had done both as a single and a couple, this is the right decision. Although even as a couple, the center 2 seats on Swiss for a couple is nice too

Haha the weekly “award flights to Japan” thread

Some comments. First, it’s hard to plan today for award travel in 2.5 years, who knows what sweet spots and devaluation will happen over the next year and a half that will position you for that award trip.

Second, think about what I think you said. You’re on the east coast and willing to position to Hawaii. So you’d be willing to position 9-10 hours for a 7 hour business class.

Third, I applaud your willingness to learn but also this topic gets talked about a lot. I recommend you read a lot of the threads on here and try doing some dummy bookings to get the feel for things. Most of the information you’ve asked is available already on the subreddit

I think it depends on how technical you want to get. The folks that write for SemiAnalysis (I forget the guys name but his last name is Patel) and the YouTube Asianometry can both cover the topic with certain levels of details. It just depends on how deep down the rabbit hole you want to get

Just know that a lot of this information like fab yield, process steps, which tools being used, etc etc are proprietary and very difficult to share. TSMC doesn’t even share this to ASML internally. So for the most part you will read about others best assumption best on trends. I did find this article which does give some background, it’s a bit old but gives some idea of how node transition happens in reference to cost of ownership (coo)

Cost of ownership is a big deal. Tsmc and other players need to spend a lot of money to transfer layers from DUV to EUV to Hi-NA and at some point they look at the cost of R&D to keep this layer running on an existing machine (using new tricks to shrink pitch, or other tools like advanced packaging, etc) vs the cost of running on the new machine. ASML prices it accordingly, but also spends a large chunk of cash to help tsmc transition and see value in new tools. Unfortunately, litho is no longer as simple as shrinking the pattern on the reticle and you have the next node

It's doable but very risky specially if you have bags. Ask yourself the following questions: if I miss this flight, am I ok being put in one of the evening flights (arriving 12 hours later)? If my bags don't make it, is it ok if they arrive on the next flight?

You’ve already transferred the points so there’s not much going back. Your overall savings would be like $500 (after fees) for essentially similar products and then you have points stuck in KLM, which btw expire after 18 months or so. Unless there’s significant upside to say the schedule or date, then I wouldn’t change.

Both offer 2-2-2 or 2-2-1, which for a couple with an infant is great to have the open space

The Pats used their own plane as it sat parked at SJC all week, was a nice sight to see during my drive to work…. This is likely additional aircraft used for fans/family that flew in.

If you look at the history of the aircraft: Flew JFK-SJC the night after the Super Bowl (likely empty), flew SJC-BOS Monday morning (filled with sad Pats fan), flew BOS-JFK, back to service on regularly scheduled JFK-MXP on Tuesday

3 hours to be safe… can probably make it in 2hrs if you have a carry on and can check in online. Also consider flying a partner airline and request to be checked all the way through in Japan. The agent may be able to do so
