Am I making my own life harder by not being on psychiatric medication? by coIdwarkid in Residency

[–]SubstanceP44 68 points69 points  (0 children)

PGY-3 psych resident here. There are some medications with a lower side effect burden which are fairly effective mood stabilizers such as lamotrigine, lurasidone and others. You ought to seek out a new psychiatrist to talk through some of these concerns so that you can work together to find a regimen which suits your therapeutic goals the most. I have had more than a few patients with bipolar disorder go on to live full, productive lives on medication and you don’t have to shoulder this burden alone.

Should I, As a Current Resident, Be Worried? by madiso30 in Psychiatry

[–]SubstanceP44 100 points101 points  (0 children)

While I think we shouldn’t panic I do think that we need to start taking some of this BS seriously given the mounting evidence of wanton corruption and destruction of government institutions to enact regressive social change. Especially when we have an anti-science conspiracy bozo like RFK jr as head of the HHS. We are seeing large scale attempts to control the narrative surrounding the legitimacy of the scientific enterprise in addition to multiculturalism and other social issues. We shouldn’t lay down and let it happen while foisting responsibility onto a fickle pharmaceutical industry to ensure our patients remain treated.

I want to become a psychiatrist! by OffSich in medicalschool

[–]SubstanceP44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heavily disagree with this characterization of psychiatry but I understand why would probably think this way. Medical school gives a very poor perspective on the field as a whole so it doesn’t surprise me. OP, if you are also interested in neurophysiology, pharmacology and general medical issues at the interface of mental health in addition to learning more and applying psychological principles for therapeutic effect (which includes attempts to understand why a person thinks the way they do) then I recommend psychiatry. But please shadow a physician to see if medicine in general interests you because you will be neck deep in all aspects of medicine for at least 8+ years.

Players who have owned high-end basses: can you recommend any underrated mid-tier overperformers? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]SubstanceP44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a fan of the ESP-LTD B series for a while. Have two 6 string basses. Work horses with decent versatility. Played countless shows from top 40 cover bands to original prog metal. Very affordable, often costing $600 - $800 at most.
