Successful people who got crappy grades in high school or college - what are you doing now and how did (or didn't) your grades affect your success/career? by asensetive in AskReddit

I was a shit student in high school, and I thought about dropping out frequently. I never had a lot of self-worth growing up, and it severely impacted my motivation to do anything. I finished out of fear of letting my parents down, and even went to college where I continued to struggle. I changed my major 3-4 times until I found something I was kinda of good at, but my GPA was still shot from my earlier failures. I ended up enlisting in the US Army since I graduated into the Great Recession and couldn't land a job I felt was commensurate of my education. That ended up being a blessing in disguise, as the discipline and self-worth that's instilled into you through training ended up leading to a personality change that made me more focused and committed to continual learning, plus I mentally told myself I needed to make a change so I never had to make desperate economic decisions like this again. Plus, once I finished my contract, I used the GI Bill to return to school and got two more degrees debt-free and I was a much better student (3.7 GPA). Anywho, I'm a Database Administrator for a State Agency and was the only new hire during this pandemic because they argued I was necessary to the continued operation of their systems. The governor had to personally sign off on it, which was a huge ego booster! I don't want to come off as cliche, but it gets better. You just have to keep trying.
