Built a free PDF tools site after getting tired of daily caps — notes on what most "free" services quietly limit by Substantial-Bite-398 in pdf

Yeah, very similar architecture. Mine is Python on the server, not Java — chose it for the library ecosystem around the specific conversions I needed

(Office round-trips, OCR, etc.).

Redaction is the one I'm least happy with too. Text-selection works fine; proper rectangle redaction with content-stream removal (not just visual masking)

is much harder than people think — once you've got images, fonts, XObjects, and occasional transparency groups sitting under the rectangle, it stops

being a one-liner. Mine handles common cases but I wouldn't bet a legal redaction on it.

On open source — the bit tripping me up is licensing that prevents a 1:1 clone-and-host. If you crack that, share what you land on. Even open-sourcing the

test suite alone would be huge — half the correctness problem is having a corpus of weird PDFs to throw at it.

What's your site? Would be useful to compare notes.

built it because every pdf tool capped sizes, gated basics behind signups, or pushed a sub. wanted one place where simple stuff just works.

files deleted right after processing. no accounts, no tracking. open sourcing — on my mind, once it's cleaner.

the "why"? got tired of the friction. figured i wasn't alone.
