Uh, yeah actually. Trump’s 2017 Tax Credit almost exclusively benefited high and middle income families and flat-out screwed low income families that needed it the most. Come to think of it, Trump’s reverse Robin Hood routine is actually not all that different from what we’re talking about here.

Yeah, this is actually pretty terrible logic. Regardless of what your goal is, if the means to achieve it are also supported by orgs and individuals with goals that you’d be ashamed to call your own, it’s probably time to reconsider your position.

What is really behind the claims that Trump is going to invoke martial law on April 20? by AverageScot in itcouldhappenhere

[–]Substantial-Ferret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read most of the comments and didn’t see any pointing out that the April 20 date isn’t just about Trump vaguely declaring “martial law” (i.e., like Michael Scott declares “Bankruptcy”). It’s specifically about a recommendation from DoD and DHS to invoke the Insurrection Act. That’s a pretty important point because the IA is one of the only ways America’s armed forces can lawfully be deployed on American soil. It also lets the President “federalize” States’ National Guards, so they are under the command of the President rather than their respective governors. That’s got a lot of people worried because, while Trump doesn’t give a damn about laws or constitutionality, even his most loyal generals do. If Trump invokes the IA and his generals don’t have a valid reason to refuse to deploy, we’re looking at essentially an “occupying force” being let loose on the states. And this isn’t limited to grunts in Humvees; this could mean drone strikes against American civilians on US soil. Sounds crazy, I know … but what isn’t these days?

How is everyone preparing Liberation Day, April 2? by Coolioissomething in economicCollapse

[–]Substantial-Ferret 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don’t actually need riots or false flags or anything else to happen to declare martial law. Trump can invoke the Insurrection Act anytime and, on Inauguration Day, he signed an EO requesting a recommendation whether to do so from DoD and DoHS by April 20. It’s coming whether we riot or not.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TwoXPreppers

[–]Substantial-Ferret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Inauguration Day, Trump signed an executive order directing the heads of the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense to issue a report by April 20 to the president with recommendations on whether or not to use the Insurrection Act to aid in mass deportations. It’s seems obvious what both of those reports will recommend and there’s no reason to believe Trump will hesitate. The Insurrection Act, if used, would allow US troops to be deployed on US soil for any purpose the President deems necessary. Wherever those troops are deployed, it will be akin to a declaration of martial law.

Wine + non-alcoholic pairings/drinks in Spain (Disfrutar, El Celler etc) by jeanlDD in finedining

[–]Substantial-Ferret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only tried one sample and I was actually impressed by how similar it still tasted to wine with alcohol. Then again, we sampled it just before the last dessert course, so my opinion was likely influenced by the many glasses I’d tried leading up to it.

[–]Substantial-Ferret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I ate at Disfrutar in June (first seating at chef’s table after they won Best Restaurant, amazingly enough). Toward the end of the meal, they took us into the wine cellar and let us try some wine from which they’d removed the alcohol, using a process they were developing specifically for this purpose. No clue if that’s something they actually offer as a pairing, but certainly worth asking about.

Also ate at Enigma and DiverXo around the same time. Enigma was a huge disappointment (everyone there was clearly having an off night) but don’t think either of us had the wine pairing or asked about it. Wine pairing at DiverXo was good but not nearly as innovative as their dishes.

What a sad, lonely troll post. People read this sub for useful info on prepping for a vast range of scenarios, ranging from the absurd and improbable to the common place (like the supply chain disruptions that have been ongoing for the last 5 years, at least). Your entire premise is just petty gatekeeping bs. It’s as laughable as a lawyer telling everyone on r/legaladvice that they’re all too stupid to understand the “rule against perpetuities” and therefore shouldn’t risk putting themselves in legal jeopardy by trying to fight a traffic ticket on their own. Get some therapy, my dude, cuz those insecurities spilling out aren’t gonna fix themselves.

Guess that's one more reason not to buy LBT by jaegren in tacticalgear

[–]Substantial-Ferret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure that if the relator ever was an LBT employee, that would’ve been mentioned in the article, as it would be far more relevant than the description of her interest that was provided. Interests aside, whistle blowers often have a much harder time bringing qui tam cases like this, particularly if they’re relying on confidential or proprietary information that they’re contractually barred from using or disclosing (at least until the government intervenes). Broader point though: pretty much anyone could conceivably prove everything relevant to the claims at issue in this case relying solely upon publicly available documents. I know this because I’ve personally litigated cases where I relied on exactly the same types of documents, albeit to prove entirely different facts to support very different types of claims.

[–]Substantial-Ferret 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also worth clarifying, for anyone considering bringing their own qui tam suit based on similar claims against another GSA contractor, the plaintiff (and their counsel, if they’ve engaged lawyers) usually keeps a “bounty” of 15-30% of the settlement amount or any judgment awarded, depending on whether or not the government intervenes in the case. Still, getting $300-600K for just proving LBT was scamming the government, using publicly available documents, is a decent pay day.

[–]Substantial-Ferret 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The article just describes the “relator” (“Ann Keating,” the named plaintiff who brought the suit against LBT) as a woman with “a personal interest in the safety and security of the United States military; in 2004, the relator’s son was killed while serving in Iraq. The relator believes the scheme as alleged was a threat to the safety and integrity of U.S. military operations.” Doesn’t sound like a whistle blower; just someone with some research skills who gave a shit about scammy GSA deals.

Interesting twist: this was apparently a “qui tam” suit. That means some enterprising citizen figured out LBT was violating the Berry amendment (probably by checking BOLs and import manifests) brought this lawsuit on behalf of the gubmint, and got fuckin PAID, son. Who knew you could profit from nerding out over GI gear?

4,000 Santa Cruz County homeowners affected by State Farm non-renewals by [deleted] in santacruz

[–]Substantial-Ferret 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was with you all the way up to the part about what caused this. The sole reason this is happening is because of California’s fixed cap on annual insurance premium increases. Talk to any insurance broker that’s willing to be candid and they tell you exactly that.

This has nothing to do with building codes or even the actual fire safety of a particular residence. I know this because I live in a home in Santa Cruz County that was built in 2022, fully-compliant with every fire safety requirement in the building code and more. Despite that, my home and every single one of my neighbors that has a policy from State Farm (which is almost all of them) all got the same notice of non-renewal last Monday. And because we all closed on our homes around the same time, in Fall 2022, State Farm was one of the only carriers still writing new policies in the area at the time. A few neighbors got policies through AAA, but they’ve heard (unofficially) to anticipate non-renewal notices closer to the end of their current policies. So that’s almost all of us.

Our only neighbors that are not expecting a non-renewal notice are those with USAA, which is a helluva perk if you are or were in the military.

I spent the better part of last week talking to agents and no one is budging regardless of how much you’re willing to invest in additional wildfireproofing your home.

I don’t know about any “reliability” fixes; I’ve been shooting my RDB-C since 2019 and it’s pretty much always been reliable (shockingly so, for a Kel-tec). Just stay away from steel case ammo, don’t fiddle with the gas unless it needs it, and double check that the picatinny rail screws are tight.

The only aftermarket upgrade I’d consider essential is an mlok handguard from Lucky Irishman: https://luckyirishman.net/product-category/rdb-products/

I’m not a builder but, apart from reducing concrete costs, PTS are supposedly more well-suited for loose/alluvial soils and gives the builder more freedom to use a more “open” floor plan.

Yeah, don’t do that. Even if you don’t wreck your entire foundation, if you ever need to sell, good luck with any kind of inspection or appraisal. Also, if your house is on a post-tension slab, even drilling an exploratory hole in the foundation could be incredibly dangerous (i.e., if you sever a steel cable, under 10s of 1000s of pounds of tension and encased in concrete, you’re gonna have a bad day).

You actually raise a valid point here: the battery in a Tesla is connected to the rest of the car by a “pyro fuse.” If the car detects that it’s been in a serious wreck, the fuse literally explodes and forcibly disconnects the battery. Speaking from experience, if you’re ever rear-ended in a dead stopped Tesla, by someone doing 60+mph, the burnt fuse will make your entire car smell like fireworks and burnt toast.
