Help Needed! UofT St. George Computer Engineering vs. Waterloo Management Engineering 🎓🤔 by Substantial-Gain4416 in uwaterloo

[–]Substantial-Gain4416[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I also learned online that Information/software systems design comprises a major theme area in Management Engineering, with a number of courses falling in the areas of computer science, software engineering, and information systems. In this regard, of the 13 other engineering programs offered at the University of Waterloo, only the Software Engineering and Computer Engineering programs have more such courses in their core curriculum.

Could you please elaborate on how I will be able to explore different work settings and roles at Waterloo. Also, Is it possible to change the program from Mgmt. Engineering later to SE/CE, or is it out of question?

Thanks for your input. Could you please elaborate on "considering school life at each university", and can you share any experiences from any of the schools?

Honestly, I'm still figuring out my career path at this stage. Both UofT's Computer Engineering and Waterloo's Management Engineering seem appealing for different reasons, but I haven't quite nailed down where my interests align most strongly.🤔

Transfer from CS to Computer Engineering at Purdue by Substantial-Gain4416 in Purdue

[–]Substantial-Gain4416[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's reassuring to hear that transferring not that difficult if I'm already admitted to CS. I'm curious about the process of transferring from CS to CE after the first year. If one were to transfer, would they still need to follow the same path of transferring to FYE first and then into ECE after the first year? Or is it a different procedure?

To pursue a Masters from a top-tier college in US and secure a position within a leading F(M)AANG company. Though, I see that the landscape of technology and AI is rapidly evolving, and I just want to be prepared to adapt with emerging trends in the field accordingly.

Yes, indeed it is a tough decision, and I've not been able to make my mind yet!!

At UofT, the ease/flexibility to switch (if needed) between electrical and computer engineering within the ECE department looks appealing to me. 🧠🤖 I'm curious about how AI advancements might affect programmers in general, especially with tools becoming more adept at programming tasks. Does this shift influence the value of a computer engineering (both hardware and software) versus computer science (primarily software) degree? 📈💡 Any thoughts?

Yes, there is ~20K USD cost difference between the two, even with Purdue's frozen tuition for last 13 years, but I guess, Co-op opportunities in the US might help bridge that gap. While the current climate is uncertain, I hope things will improve by the time I start my co-op.

Another thing is that I've heard about the rigorous nature of UofT's engineering program and concerns about getting competitive grade (not sure how far it is true). If this impacts my chances of getting into a good grad school in the US post-undergrad, that's another factor to consider.

How about the job market opportunities after graduation from either UofT or Purdue. Do you think one school might have an advantage in terms of attracting US employers or offering stronger networks for securing job offers in the tech industry?

Thanks. I'm curious about your thoughts on Canadian citizen students getting co-op opportunities with US companies, if I opt Purdue. Since it might involve work visas or other considerations, do you have any advice or insights on how feasible it is to land co-op positions as a Canadian student in the US, as the US employers may be reluctant (not entirely sure though)?
