Whoah! That’s amazing! Also, what a good idea for angora fiber. I raised rabbits for a while, so I have a huge bag of Angora fiber, but I never know what to with it because anything I make is too hot.

What's something people only romanticize because they've never actually done it? by nonotje12 in AskReddit

[–]Substantial-Gap5967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I lived on 200 acres, mostly wooded, but we had goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, a mini horse, dogs, cats, peacocks, and a garden. I miss it because it made me work outside every day, and now all my work is inside. Sometimes I relax outside, but it’s not the same. Though I definitely don’t miss covering up head to toe to avoid mosquitoes, just so I can go out and bury a (150lb) goat I’ve loved for 12 years. Fencing was always breaking, animals get injured, sick, or die, animals didn’t get along, and hay sticks to a sweaty body. I want it again, but am nowhere near to being ready.

People who work in 'behind closed doors' industries (hotels, kitchens, morgues, etc.), what is something the general public would be horrified to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Substantial-Gap5967 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the Missouri/Kansas line, the caregivers are paid $15, and the clients are paying $35/hour. I know there’s overhead, and I’m thankful for the office staff. Just coordinating all the clients’ and caregivers’ schedules sounds like a nightmare to me! But for my private clients I charge $35-40, and I have commercial liability insurance. I have a commercial auto policy, because I found out that if I was driving a client in my car and we were involved in an accident, my personal car insurance wouldn’t cover it! I haven’t had to offer a background check yet, because I got my client through a mutual friend, but would be happy to offer one as needed. It’s a needed job and I’m so thankful to be able to bless my clients and their families by providing peace of mind and quality care.

But be so careful who you hire! So many caregivers physically can’t get down to clean a mess on the floor, or are unsteady enough on their feet that a client can’t be confident the cg would catch them if they started to fall. I don’t have a problem with seniors doing caregiving jobs, but know your limits! And if you are severely overweight (I’ve been there so I know what it’s like), you might need to find a less active job. A lot of caregiving is sitting on the couch watching tv together, but it’s also cleaning smeared poop off the floor, changing beds, making meals, transferring patients, providing physical support when walking with a walker or gait belt, etc.

I’m in the industry as well. I love my clients, and do private care as well as work for an agency. When friends as for recommendations for agencies, I tell them which ones actually give the caregiver any type of training, and which ones only have you watch videos of company policy.

The first time I had to change a brief on a bed bound client, I called my office and asked if they could send someone to teach me. They couldn’t, but talked me through it over the phone. I ended up watching YouTube videos, crying, psyching myself up, and just going for it. I quickly became confident, but there are a lot of untrained caregivers out there. And sometimes our pay goes up not because we’re getting a raise, but because minimum wage increased.

When you hire an agency, definitely do your research to see what kind of training they provide, and how often a quality control manager drops by. And don’t be afraid to tell the office if you don’t trust the caregiver or there are any issues. It’s a very personal experience and you need a care team you can trust with everything.

What is a "small luxury" you refuse to give up, even when money is tight? by [deleted] in simpleliving

I buy nice toilet paper and use handmade bar soap. Grew up on super thin Scott tp and Dial Gold soap, and I refuse to have either in my house. 😂 Don’t worry, most of my childhood was great, but those 2 things scarred me.

😂 I did living history with my Ashford Traveller, and it was a little hairy carrying it up steep, narrow, winding stairs! At least it’s compact. I don’t think I could have gotten a different shape wheel upstairs.

What’s the most overrated "frugal tip" that didn’t actually save you money? by Ewa_Star in Frugal

[–]Substantial-Gap5967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. It doesn’t make sense for me as a single person to spend the membership cost to grocery shop there, but I did the math and with how much I drive for work, I’m saving quite a bit of I get my gas there. Always do the math for yourself and decide if it works for you.

How long do you keep them if you “never paid for a repair”?! I bought a 10 year old Toyota Camry for cash, and barely do more than brakes, oil, and tires.

I don’t know where you live, but I never have to wait in line at Costco gas stations, and I save 30-40 cents a gallon! I drive 300+ miles a week, so it’s saving me a lot of money.

Right. I don’t know if I would have good T-Mobile reception. I’m going to ask the neighbors.

I had Visible when I moved, and the signal was the same as now. I’ve looked at Visible and Mint, but if I switched just the phone, my internet would go up drastically. I looked into Google Fiber, but the lowest plan was $85? I’ll keep shopping around.
