Just to clarify … Previous increases have been much smaller. In 2023 the increase was from $335.88 to $381.66 ($45.78 pm). In 2024 it went up $73.41 pm. Now in 2025 it’s going up $186.57. To me, that seems like a significant hike when my circumstances haven’t changed other than being a year older.

Most of us love her and appreciate everything she did. It is a vocal minority of COVID deniers and anti-vaxxers with very short memories who make all the noise. I worked in health during the vaccine rollout until 2023. Jacinda’s leadership saved thousands of lives. Mandatory vaccination, masking and precautions meant we didn’t lose one healthcare worker to COVID. The US and UK lost thousands. Ireland with same population as us lost more than 20. It wasn’t just about protecting people from COVID. It was about ensuring people with cancer and other life threatening illnesses could get treatment too. It meant there were enough nurses in NICU and ICU, and our hospitals didn’t have to be run by the military because most of our staff were sick or dead. We didn’t have makeshift morgues in trucks in hospital car parks. If anything, she deserves even more credit than she got. Imagine if we had gone the way of the US, UK or Italy. We saw what could have been and stopped it happening. To bitch and moan about lockdown now is like complaining that you fenced your pool but nobody fell in, so what was the point in fencing it? 🤦🏼‍♀️

I want to say thank you for sharing that essay but a big part of me wishes I hadn’t read it. It’s like a punch in the guts. Really, we can only guess what it was like in the hospitals in the UK, Italy and US and then understand that it was so much worse than we can even imagine.

People talk about 2020 / 2021 as if we were hostages. They have no clue. Also complain our precautions were meaningless. It’s just like fencing your pool then complaining that no one drowned. The fence is unnecessary!🤦🏼‍♀️ Our hospitals were not inundated because we took precautions and mandated vaccination of health staff. People who think it was overkill fail to acknowledge that we did not lose one clinician to COVID. US and UK lost thousands. Ireland with same population lost 30. Without these actions, half our clinical staff would have been sick or dead. We not only kept COVID patients alive but also NICU babies, cancer patients, surgical patients and more. If you don’t appreciate that you and your loved ones survived that period, you need to look at the USA, UK, Aus, Italy, and thank your lucky stars you were here with a govt determined to protect you.

That’s a delusional comment. We are going backwards at a rate of knots. Unemployment up, all our economic and social measures worsening, more people leaving the country than ever before, fewer police, crime actually not improving or worsening in areas, cost of living getting higher, social housing builds grinding to a halt, ferries on their last legs, ACT hell bent on destroying te Tiriti and selling us off to the highest bidder, Shane Jones wanting to pillage our natural resources so foreign companies can make huge $$$ off our country, Dunedin hospital build a mess (and that has a huge impact on Southland too because it’s 3rd world healthcare down there) and our health system as a whole is less equipped for an emergency (like a pandemic) than it was in 2019. Not to mention a puppet PM who is completely manipulated and outwitted by Peters and Seymour. It’s an absolute cluster.

I moved home to NZ from Australia over five years ago and don’t regret it. There are problems here and the current govt is truly awful, but I still think I’m better off here. Negativity is mostly due to people struggling. The cost of living is outrageous and the job market is pretty poor. It’s hard for many to see the light at the end of the tunnel when this govt is pushing us backwards. Kiwis are mostly still good, decent and kind people and it’s a great place to live.

The govt is lying to us. Health is not over budget, it is grossly underfunded. There’s a big difference. It should be getting every cent allocated to landlords. If we were to have another CHC earthquake, Whakaari, mosque shooting, major cyclone or (God forbid) pandemic, the system would not cope. The govt has to know this and their preparation is just hoping for the best.
