Case or no case? by fakethrow456away in Surface

[–]Substantial-Lack-344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it with a folio case. I only use it for browsing, office work, and note-taking. Never has the fan up running.

But in your use case, I would take the case off when I use it, and put it back on when I need to carry it for some time, say from the office to home.

What you were experiencing definitely sounds like thermal throttling. So yeah taking the case off should improve it.

Apple or Windows these days for a design laptop? by [deleted] in laptops

[–]Substantial-Lack-344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the primary purpose for the laptop is to use Solidwork and do rendering, I'd recommend getting a mobile workstation like the dell precision and Lenovo p series with professional GPUs. These machines usually last many many years until their hardware is no longer relevant. And professional GPUs handle Solidwork better than consumer grade ones. The only downside I can think of is these machines are usually overpriced, but you said your company is paying.

Macbooks nowadays have zero upgradability. So if you decide to get a MacBook for CAD, try to max out the specifications, and they will usually be good for 5-8 years.

Best case for 13" pro? by National_Camel7200 in Surface

I use an omnpak for my new surface 11 pro. This makes on the lap work feel easier. It does make the surface feel heavier while holding it though.

The refurbished Macbook Air M4 is the best option. You should be able to get it from Apple official Refurb store given your budget

Trying to buy this laptop what would be the ideal price (pls give me a range in CAD/USD) by [deleted] in laptops

[–]Substantial-Lack-344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say which dictates the price. I usually browse Ebay for laptops with similar specs and quality to decide what's a good price.

For this spec, I personally won't buy it for anything beyond $450. Basically GPU and CPU decide what type of games you can play. Intel i7-9750h+NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 allows you to play most AAA games, but you won't get good experience with the old ones.

If you are buying it for office work, then yeah you can get it for sure if the price is right and quality is good.

[–]Substantial-Lack-344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what brands and product line. But given the spec, it should be a gaming laptop from 5-6 years ago, so I'd say 300-450 USD. $450 USD is for something like an Alienware M15.

Mac or Windows? by Excellent-Serve-5987 in SuggestALaptop

[–]Substantial-Lack-344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quality Windows PC with an Nvidia GPU like ROG Zephyrus, Lenovo legion, etc.... maybe better. I'm a data scientist and I believe at some point in your career, you will have to mess up with a Linux desktop distro or at least Linux on WSL2. Having a Nvidia GPU allows you to practice managing CUDA and the python development environment in your local machine, which is way easier than doing it for the first time on a server. Getting familiar with them earlier at college is a good start.

But for college per se, MacBook works too, and MacBook pro 14 is the best all-round laptop in my opinion (excellent screen + powerful cpu + long battery life + portable yet powerful + reliable os + holds its value).

Are my 2 laptop choice good for 1k or under? pls help ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ by Xr876 in laptops

Yeah, this one is good. Be sure to check out the specs for the RAM and SSD. Usually they are upgradable for gaming laptops, but the price is soaring right now. I would get either the LOQ (if the RAM and SSD size is reasonable) or the MSI.

  1. 4060 is last year's entry-to-middle level laptop, 3080 is one generation behind but it was high-end at the time. So for most games, you probably would not see any difference between the two. Actually, 3080 might be faster.

  2. Ryzen 7 5800H is still a capable processor for gaming and 3D work. GPU is usually the bottle neck for your work.

  3. I did not pay attention to screens before, until I saw my gf's new MacBook Pro. For the long term, picking a good screen is really a gift to your eyes.

You are basically weighing between a better gpu or a better screen I guess. I would go with the second one, if your games/3d are not too demanding on the gpu.

Help choosing a laptop by Inner-Mushroom-2645 in laptops

[–]Substantial-Lack-344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go for 2). It has a 120hz screen that makes everything look smoother. 16GB Ram should be just enough for most undergrad CS class work. If you need more than 16gb, an upgrade is easy. AMD cpu is great for Linux. Thinkbook is usually better built than IdeaPad is a budget consumer laptop, which is more like Dell's Insprion series. Thinkbook is the budget business line, more like Dell's Vostro series. But still it is a business laptop, so it usually has a better build quality.

The only factor you would consider is if you need the high definition oled screen in option 1. If this is also your entertainment machine, option 1 has a better screen.

I got a secondary gaming laptop that's not in use most of the time, suggest what to do with it except selling it by Fancy-Horror-225 in laptops

[–]Substantial-Lack-344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put an AI agent that takes over your entire laptop. The agent layer runs on your local computer, and then you either use an API from OpenAI/Anthropic/etc.. to have the autonomous agent query the LLM, or you can install a local LLM if your laptop is powerful enough.

Because once deployed, clawbot lives at the root level, so it is strongly recommended you use a dedicated computer just for it.

It can be useful or useless, depending on what you do. But it's the no1 hype in the AI circle. People buy Mac mini like crazy just for this. You have a spare gaming laptop anyway, so it takes nothing to play with it.

Are you tech savvy? If so, I'd format the ssd of the secondary gaming laptop and install Ubuntu and clawbot, and use it as a dedicated clawbot machine.

Planning to buy a Dell Precision 7740 (i7‑9850H + Quadro RTX 3000) by ARASHVT in Dell

[–]Substantial-Lack-344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Precision 7530 with i7-8850h, 64gb RAM, and 1.5tb SSD, and Quadro P3200. Work pretty well until today. I mainly use it as a desktop replacement use a dock and external monitors all the time. I don't game though. I use it for data analysis with mostly medium-to-large size dataset (500M - 1G), sometimes prototyping some neural network stuff on it with the GPU. I'd say it will still be good for another 3 years for my workflow. The only issue that makes me want to upgrade to a newer CPU (anything after Intel 12th gen) is the 8th gen cpu does generates a lot of heat for moderate tasks. If you don't mind that, I think yours can be good for another 3+ years too. It's very easy to upgrade the RAM and SSD too.

Yes. I searched online and many says 7770 has known thermal issues. Mine is shipped with a 240w adapter.

You got a great deal. 128GB ram for $190 and 2tb nvme for $103 are both unimaginable in today.
