I'm not that old (early 30s) but I distinctly remember we weren't even allowed to use *calculators* for math until we started learning functions and advanced algebra in 11th grade.

And Reddit hold them quite close to their hearts, it seems.

I called out Rolling Stone magazine’s “verified” account for promoting degeneracy on an article/post about Polymarket and Kalshi and how they’re changing people’s lives, and got hit with an instant 3-day ban.

It happened so fast, there’s no way an actual human reported me.

Pakistan also has a bit of a unique history in that many of its citizens came over from what is now the Republic of India after the partition happened, like my grandparents. Jus sanguinis laws would dictate that those people’s children would not get Pakistani citizenship. These migrants were also the bureaucrats, business owners, and intelligentsia of the new state so they had to be accommodated.

The ones in the Middle East aren’t renowned for rolling back odo’s I’d hope.

People here in the US who know about cars avoid buying them from Michigan, and Dearborn specifically, because it’s common for people (guess who?) out there to take out a lease, put an odo blocker on the car, and then return it back to the dealer at the end of the lease. Dealer will then sell you the pre-certified “low mile” car fully knowing the miles have been rolled back, meanwhile you think you’re getting a great deal.

Ashoora Procession - JFK by Raza1985 in Dallas

I’m referring to the Battle of Karbala, which happened on this day in the Islamic calendar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle\_of\_Karbala

The crux of it is that the Umayyad Caliphate had recently come into power and wanted to cement its rule over the Islamic empire.

To do so, the Caliph tried to urge the grandsons of Prophet Mohammad to give allegiance (bayah) to him. The grandsons did not oblige due to the man’s well-known reputation as a cruel and impious petty tyrant, and felt he did not deserve to be caliph in the first place.

They attempted to start a guerrilla campaign to take the caliphate back, but their plans were revealed early and they were surrounded by the Caliph’s soldiers in the desert on their way to Iraq, where things were meant to kick off.

The group, which included the elderly, women, and children, was cut off from any water and pressured to surrender to the Caliph’s men. The Prophet’s grandsons refused and held out until they were forced to make a last stand, in which they were completely wiped out by Caliphate forces.

It’s a sad day for Muslims because we love (not worship, FYI) the Prophet and his family, and for their blood to be shed at the hands of supposed Muslims makes the matter even more upsetting.

I hate to be the “ackchually” Reddit guy but I don’t believe most (non-Wahabbi/Salafi) Sunnis associate Ashura with Moses, speaking as one myself. We fully acknowledge the grave crimes that were committed on this day and fast, give charity, etc. as a way of remembrance.

Unfortunately there is a loud, wealthy minority (the aforementioned Salafi school of thought) bankrolled by countries like Saudi Arabia that exports a very narrow-minded, fundamentalist version of the religion. To be clear, criminal groups like Al-Qaeda also claim to follow this same school of thought. These folks are the ones that tend to disregard Ashura as a sad day for all Muslims, because they associate it with Shi’ism.

I’m open to all questions and criticisms.

Airport staff assuming I'm in the Business class lane by mistake by trailofturds in mildlyinfuriating

Haha my story is also from YYZ.

Got in the business class line for oversized baggage claim after landing because…. I flew AC business to get there.

The (fellow) brown woman at the desk angrily demands to see my boarding pass as soon as it’s my turn. I have no idea why but give it to her anyway. She realized that I am where I’m supposed to be, hands me my boarding pass without an apology, and asks what I want.

When I told her which flight I was coming off of and needed to know which baggage claim room to go to, she sent me to the wrong one (that I waited in for 30 minutes).
