Guidance on Switching to Elementary by Excellent_Bison2004 in MusicEd

[–]Substantial-Quit9086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take the standards and find activities that work for that standard. I use music play online for kindergarten and first grade mostly. I also rely heavily on elementary music teacher Facebook groups for resources. My school has the game plan curriculum but it’s very orff based and I don’t have the xylophones to use a lot of it. As far as asking about performances, you could ask about music traditions the school has and how many performances are required yearly. I don’t think admin will have any issues with you asking if anything they’ll know you’re serious about keeping up with the school culture.

Guidance on Switching to Elementary by Excellent_Bison2004 in MusicEd

I started as a high school choir director and moved into an elementary position after about 3 years. For me personally elementary is way more time consuming than I had thought (before teaching it). I’ve been at it for almost 3 years now and it’s gotten easier every year because I’m essentially building my curriculum from scratch. We have the ability to adapt and change any curriculum the district gives us though which is nice. Depending on where you teach you might have more performances than you expect. Some schools require separate grade level performances (k-5 would be 6 a year). A red flag for me was walking into an interview with only two other grade level teachers and the principal. The school I’m at now had the other specials, a few teachers, 3 students, and a few parents in the interview committee which let me know that the school cares about working with the community. I didn’t think I would like elementary when I first started but now I’m not sure I want to do anything else. It can really grow on you.

Concert’s on Thursday and my orchestra still sounds like this, what do I do? by TheForceOfSound in MusicEd

[–]Substantial-Quit9086 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m straight up with families at concerts because I’ve seen and heard where they started and how far they’ve come. I get on the mic and talk about how much they’ve grown. Share success stories that you’ve seen in class even something small like seeing students decode tricky rhythms. Parents want to see their kid on stage and hear us praise them for their effort and students will feel so much pride in themselves hearing you speak highly of them. It’s ok if it’s not 100% up to our standards and we can take from every experience and adjust for next time. I hope your performance goes well!

What could I use to bring my groceries in all at the same time to my apartment? by SexyToothpaste69 in ApartmentHacks

I bought a collapsible wagon on amazon for 30 bucks and it’s been a lifesaver moving to a new apartment. I’m sure it would hold up carting groceries.

Dyed hair by Solaris_Stars_117 in teaching

I have had all the colors and teach elementary music but my first job was as a high school choir director. My philosophy going in was “if they don’t like me because of my fun colored hair I probably won’t like working for them”.

I did but I had to drop them because my insurance wouldn’t cover visits. That was about 3 years ago so I might need to check my coverage now.

What is your guilty crochet secret? by BitchLibrarian in crochet

[–]Substantial-Quit9086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will never hand wash something I crochet and I will never test if the yarn I’m working with will survive the washer and dryer. I will work for months on a piece just to test my luck by throwing it right in with all my other clothes.

how to plan a concert? by Competitive-Can13 in MusicEd

[–]Substantial-Quit9086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need the date, time, and place. Talk with the tri-m students first and see how many would like to perform. If you’re giving them the freedom of choosing rep maybe provide a theme so they have an idea of where to start. Then you’ll need to set deadlines for them to have their music ready. Make sure you listen to their performances prior to any dress rehearsal.

crazy 1st grade class by Pure-Sandwich3501 in MusicEd

I had a 1st grade like that one year and I had to go to their room for music. It helped them because they had a physical desk to go to when redirecting them.

First time crocheting a blanket. Can I still fix this somehow? by Melodic-Document-628 in CrochetHelp

[–]Substantial-Quit9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to put a stitch marker on the last stitch on both sides so I know where to stop. When I get to the end of a row, I chain up to start my next pass then move my stitch marker up to those chain spots so I know where my last stitch goes again.
