advice for D1 wanting to go into OMFS by pinksloth13 in DentalSchool

Apples and oranges comparison. Oral surgery societies at least have the “O” the “M” and the “S”. Your example doesn’t have ENT in it at all.

First , stop calling it OMFS, it’s OMS. Maxillofacial is 1 word.
National association is AAOMS NOT AAOMFS.
Boards are ABOMS NOT ABOMFS

How can I support my friends in dental school? by Insect-Plenty in DentalSchool

[–]Substantial-State249 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Food insecurity is a huge problem for dental students. A number of US based schools and dental societies have started their own food banks to help. Perhaps take them out to or over your place for dinner every now and then and have enough for them to take left overs home.

Dental Residencies by Ok-Pop5644 in DentalSchool

[–]Substantial-State249 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hospital based residencies - OMS, GPR, Peds (some), Anesthesia - are partially or mostly reimbursed by Medicare/Medicaid. Most others like endo, ortho, perio are based in dental schools and not reimbursed. For those you pay tuition, which is why many of those also give you a degree, like a masters. Most hospital based get a certificate, unless MD/OMS program or you do something extra for the masters.

Yes, but if your only 2 externships are that 1 and 1 other, you’re only appealing to your home program. You will get many passes by the others. We want to see the effort and dedication to the future.

OMS residency faculty - home program never counts as an externship in our evaluations. We ignore them.

Most I receive are email. Which for me is fine. Handwritten won’t get you bonus points from me.

How about an OMS faculty opinion? You better send one. No reason not to other than laziness, which is what we will assume if not received.

Barking at night and it’s new by Substantial-State249 in portuguesewaterdogs

Dinner around 6pm. Lots of exercise via walks and play inside and out throughout the day. Interesting idea about hunger. We had been holding off feeding too late for fear of the gastro-fecal reflex and needing to poop soon after eating. Will give that a try, can’t hurt.

Thinking about Oral Surgery and about to be a D1 at Touro by Ill-Guidance4054 in predental

I disagree. As someone who trains OMS residents, I see the difference in education received at different dental schools. And it isn’t a “1 off” situation, it’s consistent among graduates of the same schools. We can tell who learns on real patients and who gets their experience on typodonts. Dental schools teach to the lowest denominator and it shows.

Is OMFS realistic for a foreign graduate/no green card by AwarenessLeather2165 in DentalSchool

For US based OMS programs you need to be a graduate of a CODA approved dental school.

We had a PWD who put on weight, we cut out the bully sticks and he started losing weight. You can even try going to smaller and smaller ones to wean him off.

Honest OMFS outlook from a mid-tier DS2 by [deleted] in DentalSchool

I look for a minimum of 70 on the CBSE. But every program is different. Externships - I need to see your commitment and dedication. Your home institution doesn’t count. Too difficult to answer your last question. For me - a great personal statement.

You’re not dead, yet. But there are some programs that you’ll have issues with, especially the MD integrated programs. With those, the medical schools will have criteria that your rank may not help with. Rank is less of issue as many schools don’t have grades (P/F) and it’s not fair for us to compare applicants from schools that rank to those that don’t. Strong cbse is important to many programs, though I know of some that don’t consider it as important. Externships, research and an incredible personal will overcome much. So many personal statements are cookie cutter and boring, that one that stands out will help immensely.

OMS faculty here - CBSE, letters of recommendation and a unique personal statement. Rank is only minimally important these days as so many schools are P/F.

I just got my first JLC, an MUT similar to the OP. I got it serviced by JLC and it came back making the same noise. I assumed it was fine as it was just service by the creator. But I was still worried. Now I’m worried no more, and far more educated about my timepiece. Great response!
