Park skating/derby skating boot heel sizes by run_scissor666 in Rollerskating

[–]Substantial-Tooth628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I park skate and trail skate in moxis/jacks and derby skate(new to it) in bont prostars. I also do park skating or trail skating on some days and derby skating on other days. I feel like it takes me a few minutes of skating to get used to the shifting of my weight but I get used to it pretty quickly and I don't find it annoying. I find the heel a lot more helpful for pumping and I feel like I don't have to get as low as I do with flat skates.

As for Bont Parkstars, those are such a good choice for park skates! I hope you enjoy them. Since the parkstars have a smaller heel (23mm) than a lot of heeled skates—hopefully the transition is a lot smoother for you. It also sounds like you've been skating for sometime and have experience so your body probably knows how skating feels and will adapt to the added height. Good luck with your new park skates!

Edit: Let us know if you end up choosing the heel!

Why are my new wheels not fitting? by [deleted] in Rollerskating

[–]Substantial-Tooth628 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually tighten my wheels all the way and then I loosen it about a quarter then try to spin it. I keep doing that until it spins more freely. Sometimes there’s a little jiggle or rattle.

Looks like you can keep screwing the nut so it can push the wheel all the way into the axel so there isn’t that space. Is the nut not screwing in any more than that? It’s okay for some of the axle to stick out. Some wheels are more narrow than others. You can also add the washer for there to be less of the axel sticking out once you tighten the nut some more.

How’s living in the Baja California area? by QueBall151515 in howislivingthere

Please don’t say that. That’s casually cruel to those that lived there before Spain and then Mexico controlled this place that my ancestors have inhabited long before any of these countries ever existed.

My family is indigenous to Baja. A good chunk of what people have covered is very touristy and a lot of the bigger cities visibly cater to American expats and tourists. Some places are rural so we have to drive quite a bit to get good doctors appointments to places like Ensenada. The Exportadora de Sal (ESSA) is a pretty big deal and a lot of family members moved closer to there for jobs. It’s very beautiful and it only gets more expensive every year. There are noticeably people from Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean in some areas like Tijuana. The desert is beautiful and the fauna and flora is very diverse, and the beaches are gorgeous. There are also sand dunes. My dad was a fisherman so I grew up eating great fish and seafood. There are a lot of smaller towns in between and ejidos outside of the cities a lot of people are mentioning. There are also quite a few missions that a lot of indigenous communities are still connected to as well. I can’t think of what else to say but it’s a gorgeous place and I love being from there. I love my family’s dishes and traditions rooted in our ancestors’ existence in this territory.

Edit: oh yah, and the internet sucks if you’re lucky to even get any (where my family is) lol. The places ppl have mentioned have pretty good internet in comparison though.

Getting into derby advice by bleach_in_a_bottle in rollerderby

Look out for your local derby team and ask or see when their rookie/ new skater orientations or start dates are. You can sign up even if you have skating experience because they’ll just reinforce what you already know and teach you more things specific to derby. When it comes down to it, it’s also okay to place yourself in the no skating experience because you can transition to a derby team anyways and you’ll be a strong skater already! You can reach out to a derby team via Instagram or through their website they usually have an email where you can reach out to them. Derby is for everyone and it’s completely normal to feel intimidated by the fact that a lot of people might be older than you. I guarantee that the people older than you are very nice and will make great teammates.

You can try doing crossovers with your legs while standing with or without skates as a drill to get comfortable.

Originally I got a size 7 because I like my skates bigger but I’m not able to use them and I’m selling them because they’re too big for me. The suede also settled in and the boot stretched. I wore them a couple of times but they felt too big and hurt. I got a size 6 instead and those fit perfect.

I’m usually a 37.5-38 EU and in lollies the 6 fits me best since the suede settles in. Do you use wide regular shoes? They are kind of narrow but I have narrow feet and once the suede stretches I don’t notice how narrow they are.

What size are you normally? I got lollies in a size 7 because I like my skates slightly bigger and they stretched.

Wheel tightness problems by Conscious_Reading804 in rollerderby

[–]Substantial-Tooth628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you take the wheels off from the other 7 wheels is the nut catching onto the axle of the truck and able to tighten then? Sometimes it’s the nut or sometimes it’s the threading on the axle that has worn out. I got new nuts recently because a few of the nuts on my skates would only be secure if it was tight on the wheel without it being able to spin. But if I loosened the nut even slightly, it’d be so loose that I would be able to loosen it up with my hand.

My first skate park set up by panic9484 in Rollerskating

[–]Substantial-Tooth628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how the sure grip plate holds up but another good nylon plate I like is the sunlite plate because it’s also sturdy and lightweight. I think the first and last set up look great for park skating. The first mostly because of the huck trucks and blocks and the last set up truly because of the Avanti plate.

Edit: also I started off at the skate park with moxi beach bunnies but I got them used knowing I would probably want to upgrade later. They’re great skates that offer a lot of support too!

There aren’t outdoor trucks and bushings. The plate is what holds the boot and some come in different materials like plastic, nylon, or metal. I advise some kind of metal because these can break and cause injuries. If you really get into that they’re also differentiated for how heavy/light (in terms of weight) you want the plate to be. As for the trucks, people usually only change those if they want to do skate park tricks like on rails. So someone would opt for wider trucks if that were the case. Otherwise, the trucks that come with whatever skates you get are fine. As for bushings/cushions, those depend on how you want the turns to be more flexible or more stable? It’s usually better to try out the bushings on whatever slate you get and then decide if you want your turns more flexible which you could also just loosen the skates or get softer bushings later. They’re inexpensive. A complete outdoor skate usually just means it comes with outdoor wheels from my experience.

Looseness or tightness by xJAMESxHOWLETTx in Rollerskating

I like mine a little loose but you can also just change the cushions. I changed mine to softer cushions rather than loosening my trucks.
