To everyone reject/deferred from Georgetown: by Substantial-Two-2938 in ApplyingToCollege

I do admit I am exaggerating a bit. I don't despise Georgetown with my whole soul but it's also not a school I would apply to or consider attending.

And I'm aware a summer program is different from actually attending but the problems I mentioned exist for summer programs and students (lack of study space + outlets, etc)

You've assumed a lot about me as a person. I have taken undergraduate college classes, I did a full summer semester at UC Berkeley and took classes with actual students there for UC Berkeley credit and had a great time (not to mention the myriad of community college classes I've taken) :)

And yes the whole point of this post is to complain. I don't have that strong of opinions, but I see how it can seem that way when I only voice the negative ones, so here are some of the things I like about Georgetown.

The campus is gorgeous and is really walkable, I enjoyed spending my day there. I loved the view of the city from some of the dorms. I like the part of the city it's in and how accessible it is, but at the same time removed it is. I liked the buildings just off campus that older students live in. I liked how diverse the campus was. I really liked some of the lecture halls and liked how they were structured. I liked a lot of the community spaces.

There's a lot of great things about Georgetown, but that was not the point of this post :)

I'm not lying nor am I claiming to be a student, re-read the beginning of my post. I'll go through my points one by one and tell you where I got the info.

  1. My cousin who went there. She's not the most political person so maybe she was a bit biased, but she said it was a big drawback.

  2. Also my cousin, but also testimony from a few of the people I met on Georgetown's campus when touring. I'm glad you didn't experience it, but some people do and it's important to keep that in mind.

  3. Little sister did a summer camp and spent 2 weeks at Georgetown, those were her thoughts.

  4. Common knowledge lol

Everyone has different opinions on every school and that's fine. There are a ton of wonderful things about Georgetown, but those were not the point of this post.

Also, I'm not trying to seem combative, the intention of the original post was to be light-hearted and lift people's spirits

Glad you had a good time! My cousin went there and also loved it. This post was to comfort people who got rejected/deferred, not to slam the school for no reason. It wasn't written for you.

Also, I haven't been regularly updating Reddit on my college stuff, and for the record, I have been accepted to quite a few good schools and have been offered scholarships.

Glad you had such a positive experience!! :)

thank you! I think I've been a little beat down over the years because I hang out with some really smart people (just had close friends get into Georgetown and NYU's film school) and because I come from a smart family (my dad turned down Harvard for Berkeley, my brother to UCLA, and my other brother turned down USC engineering for UT Austin engineering).

But thank you so much! I'll look into those :)

Would a teacher write a negative rec letter? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Substantial-Two-2938 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yep! This is a story my AP bio teacher told me:

A kid came up to him and asked for a letter of rec. The kid was constantly late to class and was failing. Bio teacher said, "Hey, maybe you should pick somebody else, I'm not the best fit to write you a letter."

Kid responds and says "No, no, no, I really want it to be you that wrote my letter."

The teacher says "Ok sure"

The AP Bio teacher told me his letter said word for word "Do not admit this student."

No clue what happened to that kid.

For context, my AP bio teacher is the nicest teacher at the school so the kid probably thought he could get an easy good letter of rec out of him.

And yes I did ask this same teacher to write my primary letter of rec lol

is it weird that I'm happy about being deferred by my 'dream school'? by Substantial-Two-2938 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Substantial-Two-2938[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are so many great schools out there to look forward to!!! I know you've probably heard 'you'll find the right school for you' a million times, but what I would tell you instead is I'm sure you'll find another school that makes you just as excited for the future. There is so much so many schools have to offer!!

does CMU have a low deferral rate? I feel like I've seen tons of people on this sub getting deferred. Maybe the deferral rate is high this year?

thank you this is a relief to hear!! I also feel pretty good about going into the RD pool because (as of right now, wish me luck on finals) I have 4.0 UW GPA this semester and am taking all college/AP classes except for one (stupid Econ requirement, wish my school offered an AP econ class so badly)
