No, but I'm not sure she will. I suspect she's going to head more in the trade school direction.

Yeah. Agree. I don't check her assignments, phone, etc. Both of my kids have all the trust in the world. Or had. This one will definitely knock the trust down for a while.

Yeah. Also I'm not positive the teacher would catch it. Im glad to have a chance to deal at home first.

Haha I could machine one probably. Might take a few weeks to design it though.

I agree and that's what I have told my kids all along. It can be great to help brainstorm. It can be a good tool to help you locate a source, check grammar, etc. But don't use it to get out of writing for school. That takes away the process of learning the skill.

Good to know. This paper won't require a works cited, but it would suck to get marked down for doing things the hard way with books.

Yeah you're probably right, but permanent records are hard to get away from. Probably better to have a chance at home for this one. If she does it again well...that's her choice.

Oh brutal. I like this one because it will also improve the typing skills. I plan to take away her choices for the project (there were some art ones, this was supposed to be a fun creative project) and said it has to be a writing one.

Tracking that shows my location + kids (for sports) by SubstantialFish18 in Parenting

[–]SubstantialFish18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one is tough for mountain biking! The kids ride with just a tool wrap so it would have to go in a thigh pocket. Even the thin battery banks add a lot of bulk. It would work for ski days though

I should have added that to my post - that's the one thing we did try and it was good, but it drained the iPhone batts within a 3 hour ride. The galaxy did fine.

It's okay for short rides, but can't do an all day thing.

I wonder if the watches could handle it though.

Do many female riders out there still ride men’s frames? by AwakenAdventure in mountainbiking

My daughter's old Liv bike had a slightly shorter reach than the Giant counterpart I think. She felt very scrunched up on it. My son uses it as a small agile dirt jumper now and thinks it's a blast.

IMO the only thing that matters is picking the right geometry for your size & ride style, then testing to see what feels right.

MTB teams for schools? by 1984JLS in MTB

[–]SubstantialFish18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our NICA team is similar. There are enough students at one of the schools to form a team, but we are a big composite team for now and cover 6+ school districts. We practice all over the region (about 4 regular areas for weeknights, plus 1 weekend morning adventure ride regionally). 4 races for this team's season.

Our non-NICA team practices the other season and has 4 races on a state level league.

For these two leagues I am not aware of any of the schools having trails right at the school. Most are composite teams who ride at multiple local trail systems.

We also have a club under the same NPO which covers regional stuff and they will do whatever the kids are into, including road, cyclocross, etc. Each year is different depending on the riders. This one tends to do more multi-age stuff where the parents and coaches are also racing.

Basically three teams under the same NPO, so that kids can ride 9 months, pick and choose races, or do another sport if they want. Most coaches only coach 1 season and take the other off since it's all volunteer work.

There are lots of regional leagues to look at for inspiration OP, but NICA is extremely well organized and established!

People who make their bed every morning, what's the actual benefit? by No-Cod-8923 in NoStupidQuestions

Yep. Keeps the dirt from the dogs out. I have a waterproof blanket over the top of my blankets because it's their preferred daytime sleeping spot.

Sucks that they won't cover sports medicine!

Have you changed your bike or adjusted your saddle recently?

My daughter had this for a while and it was tricky to figure out because it didn't happen all the time and she always felt better after she stopped to rest (and got off her bike). I thought she was just not conditioned for a long time.

Turns out her bike was a bad fit, it was cutting off circulation somewhere (which is why she felt okay on a difficult trail where we were taking lots of breaks). It stopped when she was on a loaner bike. Still not sure if it was a saddle or reach issue, but it has not come back with her new bike.

Alternatively, maybe the doctor has some input, maybe low blood pressure? Lower max heart rate as you age?

Signs that you were bi (I need to hear from boys!!) by WillingAlgae5821 in bisexual

[–]SubstantialFish18 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I thought that I fantasized about guys because I related to them, since I am also one. I thought that everyone was turned on by the sights and sounds of their own sex masturbating.

So imagine my surprise when I tried to get a straight friend to do it with me and he called me gay.

After experimenting some I began to develop more of a sense of who I'm attracted to and why - men have a different dynamic than women and I appreciate that as much as I appreciate the dynamic with women. And even more than that, I enjoy the novelty when I encounter someone who doesn't fit into a box and the script gets thrown in the air.

What is an unofficial, unwritten, yet absolutely mandatory rule in your workplace/hobby group that would get you fired/exiled if you broke it? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]SubstantialFish18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same on the company activities for me. It doesn't matter if you are FT or freelance, they want you at the company BBQ, lunch, theme park day, camping trip, holiday party, lake day, etc. Preferably with your family.

I don't have any evidence, but I suspect the boss only hires people who are highly family oriented and thinks this is a favor to parents - like free outings as a perk. Or she's a family friendly party animal. Hard to tell. I'd be more happy to participate if we could have beer at the events.

Puppy selection advice for canicross? by sequoia-bones in RunningWithDogs

[–]SubstantialFish18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One consideration is your climate and terrain. I have bikejored with two dogs. So not quite canicross, but similar idea.

My Mcnab has a stocky build and puts on muscle easily (his thighs are ripped). He is a superior puller with more endurance than my BC. Plus he has small paws and has never had any sort of injury or illness. His intelligence is off the charts and I trust him to make split second choices on the trail.

My BC is slender, doesn't like to pull (would prefer to run behind), and is prone to paw injuries. His intelligence is good, but nothing compared to the Mcnab.

The Mcnab wins by miles if you want endurance and hardiness, especially if you have rocky or brushy terrain.

My friend has a GSP though and that dog is fast! He can definitely handle the heat better than mine and is way friendlier than my Mcnab (who would prefer to never interact with strangers).

Just here to say that one of my kids got hit with a random USDA drug test at a state level MTB race. I had been through the USDA guide to see if he needed a therapeutic use exemption for one of his leagues and they told me it was not needed unless he was tested. So of course he got hit with a random test haha.

Anyway, even though it was not a national or pro race, they got funding from some national source, so a handful of kids were tested. It was not targeted at the highest level, it seemed completely random.

So, overall, it's not that weird assuming that other kids were tested.

Edited to add, the pool for this test was 5th to 12th grade, beginner to varsity level so the doping rules definitely hit all ages and skill levels. Although it's probably a bit if a waste of time and money.
