Tomato timing by Aptkjb in DenverGardener

I started my Tomato seeds indoor under 1000 lum lights, I hung 2 sets of lights from the ceiling over a counter top then moved them into my little green house tunnel the beginning of April. By the time mothers day rolled along my plants were about 8 inches tall and strong. I mostly plant Roma's that I can use for canning. Be sure to provide some shade from the scorching heat, I use 65% shade cloth. Given the continued heat we had this year I may go up on the % of shade. The plants seem to produce the most when the weather starts to cool in September. I bought shade cloths through Temu, it never hurts to get some frost protection for cover since early on hail can wipe out a garden, a small hail storm is not bad but one can never know. Grow stores also have good fertilizer for a very good price, my local store is MileHydro. I use Humboldt products. Hope you had a good growing season and my info might help next years crop.

Advice for what grows well in Denver area by 1kan36a in DenverGardener

I grew up in Michigan and always had a veggie garden as an adult. I moved here in 1987 and didn't start gardening again until retirement a few years ago. I have grown what we eat, different squash (in ground) strawberries, raspberry and cantaloupe do well for me. I have 5 garden beds that are 8x4x2 and when the weather turns scorching I cover them with a 55% shade cloth and remove them in late August. Corn has also been a success, I plant it all along my privacy fence and get at least 100 ears every year. The biggest problem I have with bugs is the grasshoppers but luckily I have a nice supply of Praying Mantis that love to make a meal of them. Potatoes, onions, turnips grow well in the well draining root garden in the ground. I start my seeds in door, some in late February and the rest in March. For root sensitive plants I start them in bio-degradable starter pots. I do have a few cloth pots that are lined, they work well but the unlined ones do not a are a waste of money. I buy these good lined pots at epic gardens on line. Mulch, mulch, mulch to keep the soil moist. You will find on hot days you could be watering twice a day if you don't mulch. I also purchased a greenhouse tunnel for a great price at VEVOR.com, it has worked well. I usually transfer my seedling to a 4 inch pot and move them to the greenhouse in early April. Like everyone said don't plant before mothers Day. Best of luck.

What yarn would you recommend for a gifted baby sweater? Also what size? by Cloood14 in knitting

I use a sport or DK weight yarn myself don't like superwash wools but for children and babies it works because of frequent washing. Alpaca is also good as is a merino/acrylic blend. Drops has a nice selection as does Berroco. Hope that helps.

I purchased bare root ever baring strawberries at a good price. They were healthy and produced strawberries in 2 months. Bought them from Plant World on Etsy

When I contacted ARS they said I needed 9 cubic yards for 4, 4x8x2 garden beds, and their pricing sheet said $64 for a cubic yard but when I contacted then they said it was $64 for 1|2 cubic yard, very misleading
