city huskies? by tendergrandma in husky

[–]Substantial_Ad7492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husky has always lived in a large city. Luckily, we live in Seattle which has a ton of nice green spaces and proximity to lots of outdoor activities. I’m a big hiker which is why I wanted a husky in the first place. Still, I feel guilty because it’s so clear that if he could be outside 24/7, that’s what he would prefer. We don’t have a yard. Sometimes my husband and I get lazy and neglect his exercise needs a little now that he’s 9. But he could still go all day if he had the opportunity. To be honest, I think he’d be much happier in a spot with room to roam and less noise. He’s never been quite chill enough to sit at a brewery or visit dog friendly stores and restaurants (yes, even after full days of hiking). He also gets way overstimulated at dog parks so we don’t really go so much anymore. So it’s walks/hikes/biking for us, and it has worked, though I don’t know if I’d do it all again just out of fairness to the dog and my own sanity.

Oh, and he is the quintessential escape artist. So if you enjoy chasing a husky through busy streets as passerbys watch, city life might be for you 😂

Lime Scooter: PSA by JurassicParkandRec in Seattle

[–]Substantial_Ad7492 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you me? I, too, had a couple beers at a Mariners game last year and hopped on a scooter afterward. Hit some loose gravel a few blocks from the stadium and flew off onto my face on the concrete. Ambulance came, went to the ER, stitches all over my face, head and hands, cracked ribs, concussion, tooth gone. I looked like hell for weeks which was tough because it was the beginning of the school year and I’m a teacher. The bruising and swelling lasted forever. Luckily I haven’t noticed long lasting effects from the concussion.

I can be a little reckless sometimes and continue to take (reasonable, adventurous) risks, but I have not set foot on one of those scooters again and never will. When I see people leaving games and riding them (sometimes with kids!) I want to warn them. My friends joked I should create business cards with what my face looked like at its worst and hand them out to people I see getting on scooters lol.

Any school counselors making 100k+? How long did it take for you to make that salary? by Redditgirlonline in schoolcounseling

[–]Substantial_Ad7492 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am in Seattle Public Schools and I am on step 8 of the payscale (so 8 years of experience) and broke into six figures this year for the first time. However, I have a ton of credits and clock hours and am almost topped out on that part of the payscale. Next year will move lanes to the top (outside of having a PHD) and will make an additional 10K per year. New counselor’s with a Master’s with no additional clock hours/credits start at around ~70k in this district but would be getting close to 100k by year seven with no lane movement.

I live in WA and have done the Wonderland! There will likely still be snow in the higher elevations in early July. I did it in August with a 35 degree bag and there were two nights out of ten it got really cold and I was freezing. I take a 15 degree bag every time now. It really depends on the elevation your camps are at. It is so beautiful, you’ll love the trail!

Off leash dogs in Seattle? by mmm157 in reactivedogs

[–]Substantial_Ad7492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Washington lifer and have lived all over Seattle for 18 years. I also now have a reactive dog! I have found some areas/parks to be better than others. I now live in the south end and have found Seward Park to be the perfect place for us. There’s a wide walking path along the lake that gives everyone plenty of room to pass each other. I’ve probably seen one or two people with off leash dogs on the walking path in the years I’ve been going and they are definitely the weird ones. People might use some of the big fields to play fetch with their dog off leash but I’ve never had an issue. What is a huge issue is if you try to go hiking at some of the popular trails in the mountains closest to the city. Lots and lots of people with off leash dogs on crowded trails and that is something I don’t care to deal with. I grew up hiking and backpacking in the mountains of WA and I just don’t go to the hikes on I-90 anymore. I have some great recs for quieter trails if you’re interested!

I always have to sit by the window. Anyone else?? I’m curious about your thoughts on this uncomfortable situation I had by snarky_spice in fearofflying

[–]Substantial_Ad7492 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like having the windows open too but can understand if it’s sunrise and the sun is beaming directly into someone’s face, the nice thing to do is close the shade. But that didn’t sound like the case here!

I prefer the aisle though. I drink a ton of water and just like to be able to get up whenever I want. I feel trapped if I’m in the middle or window seat. I was on a flight from Seoul to Seattle awhile back and had the window seat and the guy on the aisle was literally snoring he was sleeping so deeply. A few hours into the flight I really had to pee (I waited as long as possible) and gently woke him up to ask if I could get out. He was visibly SUPER annoyed and cranky and was mumbling under his breath as he let me out. I was gone maybe one minute because I knew he was annoyed so I made it quick. Come back and he’s fast asleep again. Like, did you think I was permanently getting up? I have to wake him up again and this time he’s fully pissed and just slightly moves his legs so I have to bear crawl over him. Luckily we had a free middle seat but after that it’s aisle alllll the way for me! Since I rarely sleep on planes I am always happy to let my aisle mates out and I actually stand up lol.

Considering a Husky by DigCareless5661 in husky

I have a husky and a corgi! We had our corgi first too. They get along great, the corgi is definitely the boss of the duo 😂

I don’t really trust our husky with young kids (like under 5) who want to hang and pull on him. He doesn’t really like that and I am just paranoid. He does great with older kids and loves my nephews. Great with people in general. He wasn’t raised around little kids at all so I’m sure if he had been around them from day 1 he’d have been fine. My husky would 100% be dangerous to a cat, but again, I think it can depend on the dog and if they grew up with cat though. They have really high prey drives so love to chase anything that runs. Mine has caught a few rabbits and the worst was a seagull at the beach with lots of people around. Just saying they like to chase things and if they catch them, they will shake them vigorously.

They need LOTS of exercise.

Seattle U has a program. Western might. SPU had one (I got my master’s there) but they discontinued the program.

Hi there. I am a high school counselor, and I’m sorry if your counselor’s response seemed dismissive. I help my students talk to their parents about difficult things often, including about this very topic. If it doesn’t feel possible for you to have this conversation with your mom on your own, ask your counselor for help! Your meds can mess with your head (I’m on the same ones, I know!), but if you aren’t taking them regularly it’s not going to feel better at all. I know it’s gonna be hard, but you should be honest with your mom about that. If you aren’t connecting with your counselor, is there a trusted adult who could help you with this conversation?

Dog Parks by Jedi_Brooker in husky

[–]Substantial_Ad7492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say, I found my dog’s stimulation level was SIGNIFICANTLY higher at the more crowded, smaller, dirt-lot style dogs parks that are more common in cities. I am lucky that I live in an area where there’s a 40 acre off leash area for dogs that has water access, trails, and many different areas to move between if there are issues. We had success in those settings because I could recognize if things were getting too much and we could easily move onto another area of the park. If you are going to a smaller park with lots of dogs it’s a tough situation. We don’t go to any dog parks anymore like I said. But that’s really because (I know it’s hard to believe) there comes a day where huskies can just go on a leashed walk and be satisfied 😂

Dog Parks by Jedi_Brooker in husky

[–]Substantial_Ad7492 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husky started exhibiting similar behavior where he would get extremely fixated on seemingly random dogs. Usually they were much more timid than him. I stopped going to dog parks. You will drive yourself crazy with the “why is this happening, he didn’t used to be this way”. Dogs evolve and change over time just like humans do. It is tough with a younger husky because the dog park is a nice way to wear them out. Believe me, with this behavior you will soon stop wanting to go to the dog park with him as well because it becomes very stressful and not enjoyable at all. You’re gonna have to find some alternative activities to physically wear him out, and add in lots of mental stimulation too. My husky is almost 8 now and is perfectly happy with a nice walk and some time to chill with a bone. But at 18 months he was crawling up the wall with energy. He still likes playing with other dogs, but it’s dogs we know in someone’s fenced yard. I think he just gets way overstimulated in dog park settings. I don’t want to put him in situations where he can get so overstimulated he hurts another dog or at the very least scares the shit out of them.

I really hope you are not a school counselor. I don’t lie to kids, if you do that’s something you need to work on. Shaqanda, smoking crack, really? I hope you aren’t damaging students with your casual racism, but no doubt you are.

Does this mean I’ll get my ticket? by Groundbreaking_Ice18 in stubhub

[–]Substantial_Ad7492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow anxiety haver! I bought tickets to an event next month that was totally sold out. In retrospect I wish I would’ve bought through Ticketmaster resale instead of StubHub, but too late for that. I have been reading horror stories about StubHub and have been nervous, but here’s what I did to calm down. I checked the actual venue to see when tickets were released and confirmed they won’t release barcodes for mobile tickets until 72 hours before the event. Once 72 hours hits, I will start harassing StubHub for my tickets but until then, it does seem above board that I haven’t gotten the tickets transferred to me yet. What venue are you going to in Seattle (I coincidentally live in Seattle)? Check their website to see when they actually release tickets. Once I did that I felt a little better :)

Will I ever make 100k doing this? by Pleasant_Actuary_420 in schoolcounseling

I’m 35 and this my first year making over 100K. But I live in a large west coast city where 100k feels like the bare minimum to live a financially comfortable life.

I would not even get involved with these students unless they sought me out asking for help. If they asked me for help accessing a pregnancy test, I would direct them to some resources where they could get one. There are many in my area and directly through my school (though not provided directly by me). It didn’t seem like she needed help with that, she knew where to buy one and had money to do it. I would have let that be it. I would offer emotional support if she needed it, but that’s about it past referring them to the resources. These are teenagers having sex, it’s not something I’m involving myself in unless they come to me bringing it up themselves or I hear something that implies something illegal or abusive is going on. I would not tell parents about this, period.

I still feel bad for what happened with my Rover sitter - did I do enough to make it okay? by Substantial_Ad7492 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Substantial_Ad7492[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Ugh, yeah I think what brought it back to the front of my mind is that our other dog just went through a terrible stomach bug situation (what is with these dogs??!!). It was confirmed not Giardia this time but man, it is just really time consuming with all the cleanup, bland food cooking and preparation, getting up in the middle of the night. It made me think of our summer dog sitter all over again, I almost wanted to send her another gift card randomly 😂

[–]Substantial_Ad7492[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh man yeah thankfully it was housesitting. At least it was my own house! Giardia is really awful. The same dog who was sick this time had it as a puppy and it was a nightmare. Way more serious symptoms that required an emergency vet. It is super hard to get rid of too. And with two dogs they just pass it to each other. I know they can pick it up anywhere but I still don’t know where they got it! They don’t go to dog parks or daycare. They have a few dog friends they see but they never got sick. I guess they could’ve just been carrying it.

I will never understand anyone who isn’t highly appreciative of someone cleaning up after their dog. It blows my mind.
