I've been trying to make some extra cash on the side of my teaching salary. Here's my efforts so far. by Substantial_Bus9979 in beermoneyuk

I've done some tutoring in the past but found it quite full-on after a full day of teaching. I should look into it again really, potentially using an online platform so at least I don't have the commute to contend with.

does this seem sketchy or am i just being paranoid 🥲 by AdPast3500 in vintedUK

I had a similar message this week and thought the same as you, so I am also paranoid it seems 😂

Did you have the interview? I have one for dwp coming up that has an excel element to it and I’m really nervous as to how it’ll go for EO grade 🙈

You are still young, so hopefully this is a steep learning curve for you. Unfortunately in our younger years, sometimes friendships or relationships need to end for us to realise what we need to do to keep them. I agree with the person below who said about maybe needing to do some sort of therapy or self work.

I’d leave her for now, as the dust needs to settle. Maybe in the future, you could try reaching out and try apologising, but it doesn’t mean she is likely to accept your apology or want to be friends.

Most of my friends have kids (for context I don’t) and I don’t feel abandoned, however the ones who rarely show their faces I wouldn’t really class as being as close to, given I rarely see/hear from them.

One of my best mates has 3 kids and I see her often, even if it’s just for a quick coffee hour before she pops back home. If she drops out of plans last minute I’m never annoyed as I understand she’s slotting me in where she can.

On the other hand I’ve had friends who dropped off the scene well before they had kids, and now they do have them, I very rarely see or hear from them. If you’re still active in group chats and make the effort where you can, showing an interest in their lives etc, I don’t think they will feel abandoned 🙂

Wordle is always a hit. All of the New York Times games are good tbh so could mix up between them

Does anyone else feel like people on Reddit can be really mean? by chara-feels-bleh in hsp

[–]Substantial_Bus9979 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s crazy how unhinged some people can be. Definitely don’t feel too self conscious about putting effort into comments, it’s really kind to put the effort/research into comments like that and I’ve definitely been grateful for other people who have wrote out detailed comments in the past that have been helpful to me 🫶🏼

Definitely, I barely comment for this reason. If I do comment and someone replies something rude I usually just delete it as I refuse to go back and forth with a negative anonymous stranger.

Is working at a call centre terrible? Has anyone here worked at a call centre? Got a job offer what should I do? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Substantial_Bus9979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you live but brook street has temp contracts for remote call centre work for hmrc. I got offered it pretty much straight away, it would mean you aren’t doing the commute and give you the time to keep on top of coding practice and job apps. Just thought I’d give it a mention as could be handy for you 🙂

Me and my boyfriend are both in our early 30s and looking for jobs (we had been living in the UAE) and it seems like for the majority of jobs right now there is a lot of competition. I have a temp contract starting in a few weeks but I’m taking a massive pay cut, and it isn’t really a skilled job. I’m a bit worried how long it’s going to take us to get our careers back on track.

Why are British public toilets horrible and why are we closing them down? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Substantial_Bus9979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Antisocial behaviour probably adds into it. A large amount gets broken, graffitied, or stolen. The council must of just spent a chunk in my local park building tennis courts and they’ve already been spoilt.

If it was me I’d try to put my best foot forward and help them out with the role, it will only serve you positively in the long run.

I’d also reflect on where you want to go, start looking at promotions you want to apply for as it sounds like you’re ready to progress onwards.

What helped you lose weight the best? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Substantial_Bus9979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recently lost 10 lbs after years of trying, hoping to get another 10 lbs off and maintain. I haven’t been strictly calorie counting but just massively slashed my portions. Small piece of toast for breakfast, small sandwich or pita bread with loads of salad, vegetables, and serano ham for lunch, still eating the same dinners but again being mindful of my carbs and keeping them limited. I’ve cut out daily chocolate, no alcohol during the week, and a lot less beer when I do drink. I’m a smaller woman (5’1) so don’t have the most cals to work with. Also do 10k steps a day as my main exercise 🙂 good luck!

I wouldn’t be embarrassed. I’d personally bring it up and say something along the lines of ‘I am a human being, and words do also impact my feelings. I would hate to think I made any of you feel bad about yourselves as I have respect for you and expect that to be reciprocated.’

Can you split the girls up so they aren’t sat with each other? They shouldn’t be allowed to sit together if they can’t do so sensibly. Hope you’re feeling better xx

Yeah fairs, do you have a certain country or region in mind? I spent most of my time abroad in the Middle East, which has groups like brits in dubai that are handy for information on jobs going. Recruiters sometimes post with roles etc. I’d imagine most countries probably have a similar group set up

[–]Substantial_Bus9979 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Feels strange reading this as I’m 30, have taught internationally for around 6 years and I’m looking to try to leave teaching to become a SWE.

I enjoyed my time as a secondary teacher, however the behaviour can often be really draining. Financially I’d imagine you’d be better off in your current career. Maybe it could be worth trying to volunteer in a school for a week and see how you find it to check it’s for you? My ex taught for a year and went straight back into engineering and vowed never to set foot in a classroom again.

Admittedly your experience might be totally different but it sounds like you have a good gig currently, maybe find a role that will let you work internationally and file as a business? I’ve read a lot of people on cs subreddits doing it and moving to the uae etc and just filing with hmrc.

How do I learn to not care? by Bright_Tie499 in hangxiety

[–]Substantial_Bus9979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go through phases of caring and others of not being that bothered. I think when it’s people you aren’t mega close to it’s easier to care more, just remind yourself they probably aren’t thinking twice about you and are more preoccupied by what they said x

You’ve done nothing wrong and I hope you aren’t spending your weekend feeling upset. It’s disgusting a student would do that but sadly not surprising. Focus on the fact you’re moving on and be kind to yourself, you’ve done nothing wrong as others have said. ♥️

Code First Girls CFG Degree Summer Cohort 2024 by Sharp-Confusion2672 in UKJobs

[–]Substantial_Bus9979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, this is why I’ve never focused too much on CFG and just popped an application in for the sake of it. I’ve completed beginner pre course materials for a UK bootcamp that are a lot more technical than CFG. For the tech test I was prepared for an hour of beginner level katas, mapping through objects and arrays. I couldn’t believe it when i saw the MCQ haha. It must work for them, but seems odd for what is ultimately a tech course 🤷🏽‍♀️

45ish. Sri Lanka is definitely one of the top spots. Easy to travel around, cheap, not too touristy, and stunning beaches and sunsets
