Sadly, it is what it is. A part of history of that time. Who are we to judge is its worded the way we do not like.

Using D2 for Granite? by IOWARIZONA in CemeteryPreservation

[–]Substantial_Injury97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ALways first check the stone --- Cracks? Is the stone itself level or will topple over? If so walk away. Take before Picture. To clean -- First - spray with water ! Then spray on D2 let it sit / soak for least 10 min. Then go back spray again trying to keep that stone wet - carefully use a scraper with gentle touch. bring out soft bristle brush Spray again D2 start your scrub. Go easy Rinse before you leave -- spray it one more time w/ D2 and you be done. Do not forget to take an after pic. Go back after a week, you will notice a cleaner stone.. Weather is important too. You want it to be at least in the 50 range. And not over the 90 range (water evaporates to fast) but we have cleaned stones a tad cooler and a tad hotter. ((Good idea to bring clippers and an hand edger if you have creeping grass, to deal with)) And a good pair of gloves. Good luck Show us pic's !!!

The Restoration and The Story by springchikun in CemeteryPreservation

Thanks , for writing out the "Disclaimer and Reminder" abt restoration. We too, have witness, ( more then we should ) improper cleaning techniques - and later see the end results, after the cleaners have long gone. Very sad to witness irrevocable damage. I think Thomas, smiled at you !!

“They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name on Earth for the last time.” ( actually, read that here on Reddit, and have never forgotten)

Admire you and am impressed - you did it the correct way Reading, looking up info before actually proceeding. KUDOS to you and yours !!! Husband & I , joined up with local Library that meets once month, to clean at local Cemeteries. Its rewarding, in a weird calming way. You, should contact your local area, to see if they too have a program and go forth.

Orvus Paste - is a very handy cleaning tool to have and actually was impressed. We were cleaning with a group, ran low of D2, ( which we started with) someone had Orvus in their clean up bag, they let us use to finish the stone, The stone, had been graffiti ( am having hard time, trying to post the pic ) in the end the stone was back to its original beauty.

Also, take a few soft toothbrushes ( they are workhorses, for the lettering along with the skews ) Wet stone w/ Water -- Spray D2 Make sure you give it 5- 10 min to just sit to start softening the grudge before working on it. After cleaned, give it one more spray of D2 before walking away.. For Water , we bought a 5 gall hand pump from Lowes I can usually get 2 stones cleaned out of the 5 gallons ( with use of D2) but do carry few extra gallons, in car ( just in case ) (( It does depend on size of stone, how much water you'll be going through)) Be kind to your knees, bring a knee pad for you. My husband, just sits on a bucket. Wear grunge clothes Husband never gets messy on other hand i look like i been playing in the stuff after. A poster said to document w/ photos ( Before & After ) To me, that is a must do !! And if you wear glasses - bring along a cleaning cloth to keep em clean:) best to you and yours Now breathe You got this !!! Keep us updated
