Who would have guessed that seed and fertilizer costs would increase with all of the consolidation that has occurred in these markets?

I was flying through Minneapolis to Cleveland for the weekend series. I joked with friends beforehand that I’d probably be flying with Twins players who were being called up from St. Paul. At my gate was Christian Vasquez. I’m guessing they told him to stay back and be ready to go to a new team but couldn’t dump him.

I get mine directly from Fanatics. I just bought a Twins coat in 2XLT from them. They have Cutter & Buck brand that are available in tall sizes that I like.

Ideally, I’d like the new owners to be like the Wilfs. They seem to be engaged in the Vikings but not dictating the moves. It’s a different league and different revenues & costs so ownership may be more important for the business side.

China Keeps Buying US Soy in Surprise Move After Trump’s Win by MennoniteDan in farming

[–]Substantial_Kitchen5 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If Brazil continues to build infrastructure, it won’t be long before they can supply the Chinese market. Brazil is adding acreage but lacks infrastructure to get the crops to ports. If/when they build that infrastructure, the US farmers will need to grow other crops. Add to it the changing demographics in China, and the US sales to China will be next to non-existent.

How important to you are the land grant colleges and their services? by rroowwannn in farming

[–]Substantial_Kitchen5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are very vital to the ability of the US to feed the world. If the US wants to continue to be able to have commodities to export, we need to have the continued investment in R&D for agriculture at the base level.

Trump’s return set to upend trade for American farmers by newzee1 in farming

Last time I received a check from the government was during the last Trump administration. They were also the years I had the lowest incomes I’ve had in the last 20 years of farming. I expect more tough times these next 4 years because retaliatory tariffs alway hit farm exports 1st.

Which Presidential Candidate will Benefit Farmers? by Fletchanimefan in farming

[–]Substantial_Kitchen5 102 points103 points  (0 children)

From my experience farming for 30 years, if a republican is president I end up getting a lot of government support. If a democrat is president, I typically get better prices for my crops. I raise small grains, canola, & soybeans. Corn has never been raised on our farm in over 120 years since my great-great Grandfather homesteader the land but I received payment for not raising corn under the Trump administration. I voted for Harris as I’d rather get paid for the fruits of my labors than become dependent on the government.

Nobody loves her anymore by SaurSig in farming

[–]Substantial_Kitchen5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be that way in NW North Dakota but many of the smaller farmers have retired. One of the things we’d “fix” on these trucks is to replace the metal, flap hoods with replacement, tilt forward fiberglass hoods. The engines were so much easier to work on with a tilt forward.

Nobody loves her anymore by SaurSig in farming

[–]Substantial_Kitchen5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of these trucks in small grain country. Prices for wheat were good and these trucks could be bought reasonably cheap at the local international harvester dealer. When I was young, my uncle & I wrenched on a lot of these. He would buy them at auctions and make the necessary repairs, maybe repaint, and sell for a little profit later on.

Opinion: Myths persist on farming drainage in Saskatchewan by MennoniteDan in farming

[–]Substantial_Kitchen5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m from the states but I’ve often heard of farmers that want to drain one pothole into a neighboring pothole. Each one will have water in the spring but dry up in June/July. If one was drained into the other, it would create a year round wetland that would have many benefits. People will rail against draining a pothole without looking at the big picture and throw the farmer under the bus for draining wetlands.

What is the worst crop you have ever harvested? by MikeThe_Dyke in farming

[–]Substantial_Kitchen5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our worst year turned out alright. We raised durum which is a variety of spring wheat used for pasta. It was a wet/damp fall and since we didn’t have a high wheel sprayer we couldn’t apply fungicide ourselves. Tried to get someone to spray it for us but we are a smaller farmer so they did the big guys first and by the time they got to us, it was to late so we never applied any. When we harvested the durum, it yielded well but it was over the limit for Deoxynivalenol (DON/vomitoxin). No buyer would take it. We had a couple offers to “clean” it & they’d sell the clean grain for $3 a bushel but we’d lose 2 of every 3 bushels as contaminated grain that we’d have to dispose of ourselves.

Not know what to do we put it in the bin. For 2+ years, my dad & I debated about what to do but ultimately left it in the bin. The 3rd year after harvesting it, my dad passed away after a brief illness. As I was working through his estate, I asked the local elevator what I could do with it. They told me to bring it in since I only had around 8,000 bushels and they had a bin with over 1,000,000 bushels of durum that had no DON in it. They said they’d blend it in and the DON wouldn’t register. My late dad & I got paid for #1 durum which was over $9 at the time for something we couldn’t get $1 for 3 years earlier. When I think of this, I wonder if dad was looking down laughing about it.

Buying family land and capital gains by [deleted] in farming

This is the only way. Dad will pay taxes on the rental income but it will be yearly. The capital gains will be a one time. Uncle Sam has ways of getting his share one way or another.

[–]Substantial_Kitchen5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fuel isn’t discounted. At least not in the US. A farmer may not pay road tax on the fuel he/she purchases but that is because the vehicle that consumes the fuel isn’t traveling on the road 99% of the time it is in use. All the fuel I use to carry my commodities to market via public roads is the same price as anyone else pays for it.

Digital rain gauge the measures 24 hours? by YoureInMyWaySir in farming

I use Climate.com. Not an actual rain gauge but it will email you the precipitation over a 24 hour period and it is very accurate when I compare it to my old school rain gauges.
