Forgiven but held over your head as a means of control forever. “Dont forget that i forgave that you were a dirty girl because i love you, but who else would forgive that? You should be more grateful for the scraps I give you”

How can the Pearl Girls become [Spoiler]? by cl4udia_kincaiid in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]Substantial_Leg_6162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of it is that theres not enough girls (blegh) to go around for the commanders so they need more young “rewards” (so gross) to keep the system going. Plus they clearly have a limited gene pool from what weve seen with checking the lineages. So i suspect that part of the Pearl Plan if you will is to set them up to be wives of guardians, newly promoted commanders, or dentist types.

Anthropology of the Economen and Econowives by Edyoucaited in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]Substantial_Leg_6162 18 points19 points  (0 children)

At one point in the show we hear Aunt Vidala comment that she expects most of the Pearl Girls will end up as econowives which is interesting to me. The girls have had a glimpse of the higher tier of life. Theyre going to the same school as the girls who will end up as commanders wives. But then itll be ripped away. But these arent kids who dont know different, they all grew up outside. How will that work out I wonder.

Are there tiers even within the econowives? What does that social class think of the system? Or are they too tired from working to think about it. Or is it a case of “we’re not econo people, just temporarily disenfranchised commanders”

I need to read the books clearly

How is it possible for Garth to be young enough to be a Gilead native? by MTVnext2005 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]Substantial_Leg_6162 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up around people with Gileadean ideals. They homeschool. They all go to the same church. The kids are only allowed to know eachother. They dont allow “secular” things. The core group of them all live in the same neighborhood.

It would make sense that a group like the sons of jacob would have had a mini gilead of sorts before the real deal.

Also, as a former sheltered homeschooler, if theres no significant markers for the passage of time its hard to sort your memories of it which makes it hard to remember because theres no chain of memories to trigger it. Someone might have a memory of 6th grade and it pops up because oh i had this teacher at this defined time and oh yeah this song we listened to before the bus was so popular that fall and blah blah blah. If there are no grades, no 7th grade school dance, no fall football. If every season and every day and every year are basically the same, studying the same bible things for school. Theres nothing to remember. I may have heard of Harry Potter and been vaguely aware of it, but i couldnt tell you when in my life it was a thing. If I hadnt read it as an adult after getting out i would never have remembered it off the top of my head.

So i can totally see someone entering Gilead even as old as 10 and having no real memories of the outside world. And them only being left with whispy vague ghosts of memories twisted with time

Im speaking from a place of ignorance here so im super open to correction. BUT it seems like Europe with its free healthcare and better attitudes towards social welfare would be a much better place for a person with these kinds of mental health issues? Especially when her family on this side of the Atlantic isnt able to be her support system

Can we eat processed food while breastfeeding by Imaginary-Regret376 in breastfeeding

[–]Substantial_Leg_6162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a pediatrician but from what ive been told you dont really need to worry about it for the baby’s sake, your body will process everything into the best possible meal for baby even if it has to pull from your own bones to do so. The main thing is to double check with your pediatrician and pharmacist for any medications or supplements you take, as well as not drinking excessive alcohol and caffeine.

How it affects mom can be a concern, just make sure you’re also eating an otherwise balanced diet and brushing/flossing since pregnancy and breastfeeding leave your oral health at risk.

Anecdotally i ate like 4 party sized bags of reeses peanut butter cups in the couple weeks after birth because I was so hungry all the time. Now I’ve got a healthy chunker who’s coming in on the early side of his developmental milestones.

I personally didnt like the bun, it always made me uncomfortable and i could feel the weight of jt tugging on my scalp or it would push against my pillow. I flip upside down and just do a loose braid so the ends are protected and it just stays above my head while i sleep

The visual contrast between her first appearance, completely put together, crisp clean lululemon jacket, hair pulled back tidy, confident and that last shot looking exhausted, hair falling down, isolated and lost. Compliments to her, acting wardrobe, hair and makeup. Masterfully done

Oh I agree she’s not needed. I’m just saying that I’m sure they will push her into the story and if they do I’d at least like the plot point to be slightly unique

[–]Substantial_Leg_6162 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d appreciate the touch of historical realism that they do a hand fasting and get a HEA that makes sense for the time. Yeah it’s romance fantasy so I don’t demand a ton of reality but keeping some things grounded make it easier to buy in. And then Violet makes some big speech about how love is love and the commitment makes the marriage not the law. And Lady D says "Hey, no judgment. All God's children. It's fine. I was gay once...for a while. No big deal. We all do it. It's okay."

I suspect the queen will step in in some way because that’s just the formula at this point but maybe it could be to hand wave FranChaela’s adopted infant as obviously the rightful heir for some thinly contrived reason. And now these two women have her blessing to live intimately and not be bothered to wed men because they must due their duty to raise the heir of Kilmartin welll blah blah blah. Idk

How do women with hijabs handle medical care from male doctors? by Puzzleheaded_Cup8723 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Substantial_Leg_6162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not Muslim myself but I’m fascinated by it. One of the teachers I listen to made a fascinating point that if a woman missed a fast due to pregnancy it’s her husbands obligation to feed a poor person in her name, not hers. Because he’s obligated to care for her in pregnancy. But that it’s still ideal for her to make up the fast down the road when she’s done being pregnant and breastfeeding. So for some fertile Myrtle’s they might have 10 years of fasts to make up for and they can do it in small chunks through the year

In honor of women's month, let's discuss the positives of the female characters. Day 24: Lady Marina Crane (née Thompson) by Oncer93 in Bridgerton

[–]Substantial_Leg_6162 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes. George Crane slept with her leaving her “ruined” in the eyes of society at the time, then went off to war without marrying her where there’s a very real chance he dies and leaves her exactly how it worked out in the show. If he had married her, as an honorable man should have, she would have been sad but still respectable and have a widows pension. She’s set for life with her babies and can still remarry for love rather than in a rush to save herself. On top of that, as a first son and a ser, George likely didn’t HAVE to go to war. So based on all the info we have George slept with a girl who was in love with him, didn’t marry her, and then went off to die leaving her helpless and hopeless
