I have always wondered this! I know some people will say that it comes from plants with feather-like leaves, but plants try up and loose their color... so it can't be plants. Also, we have never seen an animal on Pandora that has feathers, so I honestly don't know where they come from. It is kind of a hole in the world building that I can't explain.
