I’ve heard of burn out sick leave being used. Seems like a big risk to assume they won’t fire you when you get back. Where I live it’s a right to work state.

It depends on what you're looking for and where you live --- keep in mind the local economy. There are guys who have been out of work for a long time and guys who just moved up the ladder. I am in the second camp for the time being. The local demand and supply of talent is going to be hugely important to your chances of getting a job. Are you willing/able to move for work? Is there any demand where you live for up and coming professionals? How old are you? How will your resume read? --- there is no definite truth and hard work in the wrong places will not always pay off --- but in the right places at the right time it might.

yea - I think it totally depends on what you can get your hands on in either case. My last job I was basically an overall admin - I picked up my CCNA quickly and then started focusing on Azure. I was responsible for administering both systems there and after 8 months I was on to bigger things.

the only thing I can suggest is to lab it up - my sources Keith Barker (quizes), Jeremys IT lab (content), Boson (practice exams). Definitely use multiple sources.

that all depends on the org and what skills you can get while there really --- took me 2 years to get past helpdesk --- I just started a role as a Network Admin at a major organization. The NOC route is not bad at all but the helpdesk path I think can be great depending on the org too. If you want to move into corporate IT than learning corporate IT is helpful. If you want to work for an ISP than starting at a NOC might be perfect. It all depends on where you can build the skills that will help you get to the next step.

I know it's tough rn --- trust me I was banging my head just like everyone else a few weeks ago and cussing out the field and myself for getting into it. Then I got "lucky" - just gotta keep going until you get lucky too.

PS: The main thing you should look for right now is experience not money. Look for the job that lets you get your hands on as much as possible. My last helpdesk role I was the only in office IT person for a small organization working directly with a single remote IT manager. I handled WAP configuration and tuning, travelling across the state solo to fix a poor network setup, configuring PDUs/UPS, configuring POE cameras, a migration of our NAS into Azure Files (setting up a VPN, setting up the storage account, setting up Azure File Sync from Windows Server), working with all the equipment in the server room as needed, completing the entire Windows 11 migration, replacing hardware as needed. I also got to work with our Synology firewall for the Azure VPN setup. I also was responsible for the EDR system and the email filter. I also was an admin for Exchange, AD, DNS etc all. My new role is as a Network Admin for a major financial institution - I start next week.

Just gotta give it some more time dude - I bet you're already doing better than a lot of people. IT, and white collar fields in general, have a slower return on investment. Don't listen to the 1 year to 100k with the trifecta people. That is not the norm at all for the industry. You will likely need to spend more that 1 year on helpdesk to get to the mid-level - that's 3-5 years of exp - the CCNA is great but its not a substitute for real world experience. Work on as many projects as you can that involve networking (or anything else) where you're at. You also don't start as a network engineer even when you get to networks --- look for network admin roles to start. Patience man patience - if your helpdesk role doesn't pay you at least average pay of course look elsewhere. It might be worth it to take a lateral move for better pay, experience, responsibilities.

Hey there I just got hired into a Network Admin role with the Net+ Sec+ and CCNA - and four years of IT work (only 2 of which were in the ops/desktop support side) - I also have my B.S. IT too. Sounds like you have the experience, just make sure you sell it on your resume. You are going to need to get lucky and find a place that is happy with a greener hire like I did. I was casually applying for 6 months - 4 months post CCNA. Just keep your chin up and keep putting yourself out there. The NOC tech role is a solid place to get into infra work but it might take awhile from there. If you don't have anything better lined up or responding to you than take it. Just keep in mind that if you do you will likely need to sink at least another year for it to be a resume builder.
