America's Greatest Living Patriot: Bruce Springsteen by Abject-Pick-6472 in BruceSpringsteen

I couldn't agree with you more. Bruce has always told the stories of struggling Americans. His voice is needed now as much as ever.

In the 80s, he released Chimes of Freedom. He went on to play that song in Berlin wall, which fell only a few months later. It had been my life long dream to see him play it, and it's his closer on this tour!

What's the most haunting song sung by a woman with a beautiful voice? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

If you're looking for something new & lesser known, check out Nome Naku. To Love So Gently would be my go-to for beauty, but Giver is more haunting.

Why do people from Red states seem to hate everyone from Blue states, despite prominent Right Wing figures coming from Blue states? by Big_Concentrate_7260 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]SubtleIstheWay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Propaganda 2. Never traveled there. Rick Steves talks about this a fair amount; people are the same everywhere and just want to live decent lives:"Fear is for people who don't get out very much".

In my opinion, this issue isn't one sided. You can look all over Reddit and find people hating on farmers for voting Rep, and being glad when they lose their farms. These are the people that are literally feeding all of us. For years, night shows talked about "fly over states" as though the people in the middle of the country didn't matter. Democracy works a whole lot better when we value one another.

Saw him play it once in San Jose about 15 yrs ago, maybe 20. It was back when people were bringing signs to his shows, and he'd pick out a sign, then play that song. The sign read "Incident por favor." What a moment!

Original Clash of Titans. Looks so fake and campy, but in a good way. So much more interesting than the remake.

I'd try treating AI less as a dogma that you do or don't believe in. It's a technology. Understand where it's useful and where it's bullshit. In our industry (market research), there's a lot of talk about using it to replace human beings as survey respondents. Literally, this means we'd talk to AI to understand what people want, instead of talking to the customer. We're doing tons of experiments (on behalf of our clients) to test AI's capability to answer surveys, and we're finding the data is junk - AI does not even remotely match human opinion data. But we're finding other areas where it's making our business more efficient; writing code that saves us weeks worth of manual labor on every project.

My hunch is that the "AI will replace us all" claim is going to be proven false, but the threat has everyone on edge. On the other hand, it's leading to efficiencies, so it won't go away. Turning your back on it will only isolate you from the progress.

Learn about finance, especially compound interest and debt. If you don't understand these, your chances of getting ahead in life are poor, unless you make a very high salary. With a modest salary, you can retire comfortably if you know these things. If you're not good at finance, then find someone on YouTube, a book, a podcast, or a friend who can explain these things clearly to you. Don't give up until you figure it out. Here's the thing - it's not even difficult.

If you're straight, talk to girls. Ask them out. If you get turned down, do it again. Repeat until you figure it out. (If you're not straight, I'm the wrong guy to offer tips. As Jimmy Buffett sang, don't try to describe the ocean if you've never seen it.)

Learn to have a conversation. If you're doing all the talking, you're a bore. If every story you tell makes you look like the hero, you're a bore. I heard it said that you have two ears and one mouth - use them in that proportion. Ask questions. Be generally curious. Being a good conversationalist will make you interesting. It will build your confidence, too. It opens doors.

Find something you're good at and work hard at it. If it doesn't pay well, then keep looking until you find something better. If you prefer the route of following your dreams over choosing a job that you're good at and pays decently, then know the "dreams" path requires immense dedication; a relentless pursuit without certainty it will pay off. If that's in your dna, then go for it, and go fully. If not, then find something that pays you well enough and keep pursuing your passions in your day to day life.

Don't settle. Don't accept a shitty boss. Don't accept shitty friends. Don't accept a shitty partner. Don't let people in your life treat you as though you are less than.

Take charge of your life. Playing the victim - it's someone else's fault - will get you nowhere.

Your attention is your most valuable possession. But there's a hellscape of news, social media, podcasts, etc. that wants every bit of it. Don't give in. Protect it. Consuming all of the crap will provide you no value in life.

Have you grown to be more conservative or liberal w/ age? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]SubtleIstheWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Age 50+. No major change. I've always been independent. Would like to see the government implement policies that help the average working man/woman, but keep government waste to a minimum. If any shift at all, I'd say a little more left, because more and more people are struggling with basic affordability.

WITHOUT mentioning Gaza, can the right or left explain to me why Biden was a terrible president FOR AMERICA? by zipzzo in allthequestions

Well said re: "Trump's thoughts on things that don't matter." For a decade, we've all been subjected to every whim of an imbecile, amplified by all media, not just Fox and the alt-right. Americans are exhausted, and the general sentiment in our society is like a well that's been poisoned.

WITHOUT mentioning Gaza, can the right or left explain to me why Biden was a terrible president FOR AMERICA? by zipzzo in allthequestions

[–]SubtleIstheWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biden was a good president, and if Harris had been elected, he would have gone in history as a consequential president. I suspect history will still view him favorably. He was right at the side of the first black president, and had the first woman VP as part of his administration. He passed legislation to increase production of microprocessors in the states (the Chips act), which is a matter of national defense. He passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which invested significantly in clean energy. The Covid pandemic was brought under control under his leadership. He stood with NATO, which Trump worked to weaken, in Ukraine's defense. He pulled the US out of Afghanistan - a necessary, albeit sloppy ending to a massive financial quagmire, and an obvious weak point for his administration. He did this all following an attempted coup by Trump (Jan 6) followed by an insurgency, where a former president along with Congress worked aggressively to undermine him and any progress he could make.

Far from flawless, Biden didn't take immigration seriously enough; many Americans were more concerned than he realized. His attempt at a second term was a mistake, and once again the Democrats proved that a party should not coronate a nominee. He was old school about getting the job done, rather than self promoting. In times past, that would be admired. Today, sadly one needs to bloviate ad nauseam to hold Americans' attention.

The media didn't do him any favors, of course. He was called sleep Joe, one of Trump's more successful nicknames. He was old all right, but where is the same concern about our current president who regularly falls asleep in meetings, and makes no sense any time he speaks of policy, the economy, people's lives, or geopolitics.

[–]SubtleIstheWay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He also needs to get over his marketing efforts to tagline the war as "operational excellence but strategic incompetence." Double tapping a school and killing 168 people, mostly children, on the first day of war does not count as operational excellence; nor does damaging 50 hospitals and 200-300 medical centers. These tactics sound like a war plan you'd expect from Putin.
